So many sitcoms are cancelled after one year, mainly because thet are in a bad time slot, or people just don't watch the show. What these networks want are ratings that will top the charts. UPN is having some real trouble with their ratings, while ABC is doing the best right now.

i always wondered this also... They run until the fall and then dont start until the next year...

I suppose they want a break from time to time between seasons...

Goes back to Nielsen ratings days and the notion that the average viewing household's watching habits adhere to a traditional work/school schedule (of the long past) September-May period. After that, it is assumed that folks are on holiday or out doing things during the Summer months. If no one's watching, why make new shows, right? Just throw on reruns or some other filler for the shut-ins.

There's much more involved on a production level, but that's about it for the traditional, ye olde fashionde broadcast schedule.

Now, with streaming and programming that runs off-the-clock, that whole system is out the window. A season of a show might be 8-15 episodes with whacking great breaks in between "drops" of episodes. Or the whole series might drop at once, get pirated and binged in a weekend.
