Something Major ... Major ... Rolls Into TV Land When M*A*S*H Premieres on New Year's Day

NEW YORK, Dec. 13 -- TV Land kicks off 2007 in a "MAJOR" way when M*A*S*H -- one of the most successful shows ever seen on television -- debuts on the network with the week-long "Major Major M*A*S*H Marathon." Beginning Monday, January 1 through Sunday, January 7, viewers can ring in the new year with the gang from the 4077th as TV Land airs the following in prime time: all the major episodes from the series; the original major motion picture of the same name; the 20th and 30th major reunion specials and the major landmark series finale. Throughout each day, TV Land will showcase iconic M*A*S*H performers in guest appearances on other TV Land shows, as well as M*A*S*H episodes featuring famous guest stars such as John Ritter, Laurence Fishburne and Blythe Danner.

Additionally, on TVLand.com, fans can play a M*A*S*H trivia game and find information about the history of the show and cast. M*A*S*H will air in its regularly scheduled timeslot of every night at 10:30 p.m. and Tuesday & Thursday-Sunday at 10 p.m. (all times ET/PT) beginning Monday, January 8.

According to TV Land's New Generation Gap Study, M*A*S*H is THE #1 favorite show among Adults 40-59 and a Top 5 show among all adults.
Additionally, Baby Boomers selected M*A*S*H as their all-time favorite TV show, followed by CSI, Star Trek (which joined TV Land in November), Law & Order and 24. Also, Alan Alda's Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce character ranks as a top 5 all-time favorite TV character among Adults 18-59. The landmark study, which included input from more than 4,000 respondents nationwide, was commissioned by TV Land, a division of Viacom Inc.'s MTV Networks (VIAB), to deepen the networks' understanding of Boomers and was conducted by San Francisco-based Age Wave under the direction of its president, Ken Dychtwald, Ph.D., the nation's foremost authority on Baby Boomers, and Harris Interactive(R).

"M*A*S*H is undoubtedly one of the greatest television shows of all time," states Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land. "With an incredible ensemble cast and witty, sharp writing, it is no wonder it is the #1 show among Baby Boomers. It is an excellent complement to our already stellar line-up."

Throughout the week, TV Land will complement classic episodes of M*A*S*H with the following:

* The shows' 20th and 30th Anniversary retrospectives (20th Anniversary Reunion airs Wednesday, January 3 at 10 p.m. and Saturday, January 6 at 4 a.m. 30th Anniversary Reunion airs Thursday, January 4 at 10 p.m. and Sunday, January 7 at 4 a.m.)

- Written, produced, and directed by Michael Hirsh, this 1991 20th Anniversary Reunion special is hosted by actress Shelley Long at the Fox Ranch, where the series' exterior scenes were shot. The special includes cast members' insight into the characters they played. Alan Alda, Gary Burghoff, William Christopher, Jaime Farr, Mike Farrell, Larry Linville, Harry Morgan, Wayne Rogers, David Ogden Stiers, Loretta Swit and Gene Reynolds are featured.

- Originally airing May 17, 2002, the M*A*S*H: 30th Anniversary Reunion special reunites cast members Alan Alda, Mike Farrell, Wayne Rogers, Loretta Swit, Gary Burghoff, Harry Morgan, Jamie Farr, David Ogden Stiers, William Christopher and Allan Arbus, as well as producers Gene Reynolds, Larry Gelbart and Burt Metcalfe as they reminisce with clips on the beloved, and at times, controversial series.

* The original MASH movie (Airs Monday, January 1 at 10 p.m. and Friday, January 5 at 10 p.m. and re-airs immediately)
- In this film which inspired the landmark series, the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital is shaken up by the arrival of Captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Duke" Forrest (Tom Skerritt). Joined by renowned chest-cutter "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the surgeons set about dealing with the daily carnage of the war.

* M*A*S*H series finale (Airs Tuesday, January 2 at 10 p.m. and re-airs immediately, Saturday, January 6 at 11 p.m. and Sunday, January 7 at 8 p.m.)
- This finale remains one of the most successful show installments in television history and -- when broadcast in 1983 -- was a major programming milestone which attracted over 105 million viewers, the largest TV audience ever.

* "Before They Were M*A*S*H Stars" (Airs Monday-Sunday between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m.)
- TV Land airs episodes from its programming line-up of Gunsmoke, The Jeffersons, Good Times and The Andy Griffith Show which feature M*A*S*H stars Jamie Farr, Larry Linville and Loretta Swit.

* "Famous Guest Star Episodes"
- TV Land showcases M*A*S*H episodes which feature notable guest stars such as John Ritter, Ned Beatty, Rita Wilson, Laurence Fishburne and Blythe Danner.

Based on the 1970 Robert Altman film of the same name, M*A*S*H revolves around life at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, where wounded and sick soldiers are treated. The show centers around Dr. Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce (Alan Alda) and Dr. "Trapper" John McIntyre (Wayne Rogers), two brilliant surgeons often preoccupied with attractive nurses, practical jokes and merry-making, all while disregarding military decorum.

Their relaxed approach is a source of consternation for other medical staff including Dr. Frank Burns (Larry Linville) and Lt. Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan (Loretta Swit), whose secret love affair is no secret. Lt. Colonel Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) is the camp commander who gives "Hawkeye" and "Trapper" free reign, further irritating Burns and "Hot Lips." Lt. Blake is aided by the nervous, yet efficient, Corporal Walter "Radar" O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff). Other show regulars include Corporal Max Klinger (Jamie Farr), a doctor's aide in the operating room who wears women's clothing in the hope of being discharged and Father Francis Mulcahy (William Christopher), who runs an orphanage and serves as the unit's chaplain.

Many cast changes occur throughout the series' run as McIntyre is discharged and is replaced by Dr. "B.J." Hunnicut (Mike Farrell), a clean cut family man. Dr. Burns is also later discharged and replaced with Dr. Charles Emerson Winchester (David Ogden Stiers), a Boston blueblood who does not get along with Pierce and Hunnicut. The most significant departure from the series comes with the exit of Henry Blake, who is replaced by Colonel Sherman Potter (Harry Morgan).
Throughout the series, there is a great deal of character development as Houlihan becomes friendlier, Pierce becomes more sensitive and Klinger becomes more assuming of his authority.

11:00PM M*A*S*H Mon & Wed; The Jeffersons Tues & Thurs-Sun (replaces Sanford & Son)

I don't get this. Why is MASH airing on 2 apart days a week(not like Friday/Saturday or on the weekend). It's confusing and it sucks. Why not just either air MASH or The Jeffersons every night in the slot?

and I don't like MASH either.

They have TV Land originals on Mondays (encores) and Wednesdays (new) at 10, so on those days MASH airs 10:30 and 11pm. They want to air double episodes of MASH each day. Those days Jeffersons is just 11:30pm, every other day it is 11pm and 11:30pm.

TV Land Explores Entertainment's Longstanding Mysteries With the Debut of TV Land Myths and Legends

Six-Part Series Premieres Wednesday, January 10 at 10 p.m.

NEW YORK, Dec. 18 -- TV Land takes a look at the most compelling and intriguing mysteries in Hollywood with the premiere of TV Land Myths and Legends on Wednesday, January 10 at 10 p.m. (all times ET/PT). From delving into the secret of which of Carly Simon's former lovers inspired her hit song "You're So Vain", to the truth behind a possible Poltergeist curse, to whether Barry Williams was really high during an episode of The Brady Bunch -- this six-part series goes behind-the-scenes to investigate Hollywood's most fabled myths and legends.
Produced by Gay Rosenthal Productions (Behind the Music and Little People, Big World), each 30-minute episode explores the truth behind these notorious stories.

"If there's one thing that people love to talk about, it's entertainment's most famous -- and infamous -- myths and legends," states Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land. "These mysteries are a part of the Boomer fabric, and this series examines the deepest, darkest and -- at times -- most unbelievable tales about Hollywood that have existed throughout the years."

TV Land Myths and Legends features original interviews, archival clips and appearances by celebrities -- many of whom had a direct connection to these legendary stories. Each episode explores extraordinary tales about Hollywood's most memorable stars, TV shows, films and music. The series examines the origin of these myths and rumors -- shedding light on some of pop culture's darkest mysteries.

The following are episode descriptions for TV Land Myths and Legends (all times ET/PT):

Wednesday, January 10, 10 p.m. - "The Ghost & Mrs. Gabor"
Who really inspired Carly Simon's #1 hit, You're So Vain? Is that really the ghost of a nine-year-old boy seen through a window in the film Three Men and a Baby? What shocking, sexual innuendo heated up late night when Johnny Carson asked Zsa Zsa Gabor to remove her pet cat from her lap? We'll explore these mysteries and more on this episode of TV Land Myths and Legends.

Wednesday, January 17, 10 p.m. - "Secret Agents & Game Shows "
Among the mysteries explored in this episode of TV Land Myths and Legends: Is it true that Gong Show host and producer Chuck Barris was also a trained CIA assassin? Did a beautiful Bond girl die of suffocation when her entire body was painted gold for a scene in Goldfinger? What stunning x-rated answer did a contestant give Bob Eubanks on The Newlywed Game?

Wednesday, January 24, 10 p.m. - "Munchkins & Misbehavior"
Was Barry Williams really high on the set of a 1973 episode of The Brady Bunch? Did famed TV chef Julia Child actually drop a chicken, pick it up, and advise her audience, "Remember, you're alone in the kitchen?" Can the body of a suicidal munchkin really be seen hanging from a tree in The Wizard of Oz? This installment of TV Land Myths and Legends explores the truth behind these mysteries and more.

Wednesday, January 31, 10 p.m. - "Film Frights & Red Scares"
Was Lucille Ball ever a Communist? Did an unemployed ice cream truck driver win over $100,000 on the game show Press Your Luck by memorizing the supposedly random patterns on the game board? Is Long Island's Amityville Horror house really haunted? These are just three of the mysteries explored in this episode of TV Land Myths and Legends.

Wednesday, February 7, 10 p.m. - "Super Stars & Sudden Deaths"
Did Mama Cass of The Mamas and The Papas really die by choking on a ham sandwich? Did Joan Rivers truly reveal Victoria Principal's phone number live on The Late Show? Did television Superman George Reeves really leap from a tall building to his death? These mysteries and more are explored on this episode of TV Land Myths and Legends.

Wednesday, February 14, 10 p.m. - "Graves, Gilligan & Groucho".
TV Land Myths and Legends investigates some of Hollywood's most compelling mysteries: Is there really a Poltergeist curse? What sexual innuendo did Groucho Marx get away with on You Bet Your Life? Was Gilligan's Island a metaphor for hell? Were the recently buried remains of legendary film comedian Charlie Chaplin dug up by grave robbers and held for ransom?

That myths and legends show will be interesting. Most of those, I already know the answer to. I know the one abt the unemployed guy who memorized the pattern on PRESS YOUR LUCK, and won $$$$$$$. He was later found out. I remember the Game Show Network had a special abt him. It was over an hour long and they talked abt how he did it, they even had two people learn the pattern and show how easy it could be done.

I guess I'm pretty much done with TV Land then...

Jeffersons didn't do that hot on TV Land back in 2002 either, but they didn't expose it nearly as much as they did this time around. I think they were just finishing N@N's contract up when they aired it back in '02. The most I remember it ever getting was a Twice-as-Nice slot and one at 12AM or something similar.

Pavan
12-22-2006, 03:45 PM
I think Jeffersons did decent, but S&S might be doing well at 11-12. I think eventually they will have to cut down on Andy Griffith, and maybe by then Jeffersons will go to 9-10...who knows.

Wow they're flying through these TAGS episodes - I hope this stops soon! If I was in charge, here are the changes I'd make:

9:00PM Leave it to Beaver [replace TAGS]
9:30PM Leave it to Beaver [replace TAGS]
5:30AM I Love Lucy [replace LITB]

I don't know what I'd do with the other TAGS encores, it's too difficult to figure out when they air..

That too much Andy Griffith they are looking for the viewers to watch it on time slots or a promtion to buy DVD which there alot of them are still on the shelf at Best Buy or Aamzon waiting to be sold . I dont like Andy at all YAWN ZZZZ. Tvland is wasting their time.

Im glad that Golden Girls sold DVD very fast. One more to go season 7 the final season will be release in Feb 13th 2007 and I can watch it anytime. But they are funniest show I ever watched.

M&L looks pretty good, I may watch. I see that Hallmark is having a M*A*S*H marathon of their own from 8a-8p New Years Day.

Oh, TheLink is stating that Good Times and Flip Wilson aren't likely to be renewed in June, '07. I didn't think Flip would be renewed, and never really thought about Good Times, they used to go on about how well it did but maybe everyone got burned out, I know I did. They played it all of the time for a year or so!

What the  is WRONG with this CHANNEL? This is getting ridiculous. What about I Love Lucy? That classic is practically collecting dust it's aired so little [compared to TAGS, M*A*S*H, etc]. Can we not at least have Beaver from 9-10? I love Andy, but this has gone too far. WAY too far.

I wonder if airplays has to do with why they supposedly aren't renewing Good Times? I'd hate to see that happen to TAGS.

Pavan
01-03-2007, 07:25 PM
I thought we were finally losing two slots of Andy on Jan. 8, but with this recent change we are back to the same number of airings.

It was: 8-10pm, 1:10am, 1:45am, 2:20am, 2:55am every night, and 11:30am Sundays.
Effect. Jan. 8: weekdays 5-6pm, every night 8-10pm, every night 2:20am & 2:55am and Sundays at 11:30am effective Jan. 8.

So, we lose 1:10am and 1:45am, but gain 5:00pm and 5:30pm...

Good Times and Three's Company are not airing because they overplayed the episodes and are low on airplays. If they renew them, you'll see them air much more with full airplays. Good Times expires early July and Three's Company end of Sept...I think one or both will be renewed.
I wonder if Andy will be a culprit of low airplays soon...

Scoobiedoo30

The Andy Griffith Show must be doing well for TV Land

clj2
01-03-2007, 07:37 PM
If they renew just one, I'd think it would be Three's Company. Just a prediction.

They're going to get themselves in trouble if they keep airing TAGS as much as they do and get low on airplays, because:

1) TAGS doesn't expire until like 2009 or 2010 doesn't it? If they use them up, they'll be waiting for a LONG time until they can renew and get more airplays.
2) TAGS is the only show that does REALLY well that's on the schedule right now, so what would they do if they have to drastically cut back or put it on hiatus? Air Beaver all of the time?

Just my two cents.

Scoobiedoo30
01-03-2007, 07:38 PM
The Andy Griffith Show has been on TV Land since 2000

JulieSomoski
01-03-2007, 07:51 PM
So, it actually airs 9 times a day, counting the morning airing. IN my opinion, that is outrageous, even ifit does do well. I mean, here we have Night COurt and Benson, airing once every Saturday or Sunday, then we have TAGS airing 9 times A DAY. I'd wish they'd show The Jeffersons some more. They run through the show just once, and already its pushed to latenight. Sounds like Nick at Nite . . .

I have a question. If the 1:45 and 2:20 slots for TAGS is gone, what is going to replace it?

Pavan
01-03-2007, 08:31 PM
Bonanza and Gunsmoke could come into primetime, if they run low on TAGS. I think the new TAGS contract just started last year and doesn't expire until end of 2009, hence why it is being aired a ton now, meaning they have close to full plays on each episode. Both westerns do very well. Sanford & Son and Beaver also do decently. Little House does too I think. MASH will do well I think...it always has on every cable channel and in syndication in general.

Scoobiedoo30

clj2
01-03-2007, 11:47 PM
I'm still just baffled by all of this TAGS. Are the ratings for everything else that dismal? A Western in primetime wouldn't be bad. If not that maybe 2x/Beaver from 9-10. But they don't need to run low on Beaver though. I hope they get some solid performing shows added this year so they don't have to rely on TAGS, Beaver, and Sanford so much. I don't care for M*A*S*H, but good luck to them. Maybe Gilligan and the Hillbillies would be good. Both did well in their previous runs on TVL.

I agree about I Love Lucy but according to know-it-all Link over at the TV Land boards it's ratings are supposedly horrible, which I find a bit hard to fathom because it ran in prime slots on Nick@Nite for 7 straight years.

And although it's still a bit of a ways away, Link also says Good Times isn't being renewed, although I think TV Land would be stupid to let it go.

JT
01-04-2007, 12:50 PM
That's just plain overkill with TAGS. Blatant and obvious.

They could take LHOTP off for all I care now. I've gotten quite fond of watching it Hallmark Channel again. It's the perfect after-school show.

clj2
01-04-2007, 12:57 PM
Lucy is often called the greatest sitcom of all time, and has a large fanbase - there's no reason it shouldn't do well. Also it aired in primetime at 9PM on TV Land for a year, and then in the 11PM hour until late 2003.

If I were them, I'd show a lot of All in the Family and burn the rest of the airplays up. Doesn't it expire in June? I don't see them renewing, but who knows. Maybe it could air at 2AM and replace TAGS.

TVLAND is making me very disgusted and angry. Andy Griffith makes a good daytime show, and I think nothing bad of it, but it airs TOO much. you can't tell me that they can't at least try some of the MANY shows they aquired and abruptly dropped/air once a week like 227, Night Court, Cheers, etc. I'd love to see a mix of shows for a change. These "three shows" that they cater to (TAGS, LITB, Green Acres (it airs on I Network as well)) as well as "Gunsmoke" and "Bonanza". And what about "The Jeffersons"? I was really getting in to this show, and they removed it from 10pm and still have the nerve to have 2 hours of Andy from 8-10pm.

As far as "Lucy", there's noooo way it should get terrible ratings. This is what started "quality TV".

Hmm Tvland is becomming a PBS network that nobody watch. But too much Andy they are still wasting their time. Tvland did marathon with Good Times last year becasue of the rating for short while and they cut back. Andy is very old show & overplayed and cheap too they rather watch it on DVD. Andy wont helped your rating.

Young people & baby boomer rather play game or surfing on computer talking their cell phone outside wonderful modern stuff & watching other popular show but no time for old overplayed Andy it will last for two week rating start to slipped you can count it.

One more thing before I go overplayed Gunsmoke and Bonzaza wont last very much longer either they rather surfing on computer and play game playstation 3 & go outside in warm weather on weekend.

Who watches these has beens? The last four years tvland ratings have droped.
Why?

Because tvland has to continue repete certain shows over and over! For example, How many times do they air gunsmoke and bonzana. When the
could be airing other great classic shows. When was the last time tvland
air classic kid shows for the kids. God this sucks!

Network Scores Double-Digit Gains in Rating and Delivery for the Week in Prime

NEW YORK, Jan. 9 -- The launch of M*A*S*H on TV Land proved to be a "major major" smash! The series, which kicked off with a week-long "Major Major M*A*S*H Marathon" on Monday, January 1 through Sunday, January 7, scored spectacular ratings in prime time for the week, attracting an average of 1.3 million total viewers and scored double-digit increases in demo rating and delivery. If they show 70s, I hope it's something more 'traditional'...maybe Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, or even Laverne and Shirley. Ultimately, though, I am crossing everything possible that maybe something will posess them to get something from the 1960s!

Does anyone know exactly why they keep altering and changing the schedule so much? I was just getting used to and enjoying Beaver from 6-7 and they pull it and add another episode of Gunsmoke at 7...are the ratings that bad for everything? I'm predicting another change this week or early next week, these things seem to be happening about every 2 weeks lately.

The reason last night was changed because they didn't have Andy on in primetime, so they decided to pre-empt Jeffersons for one night. Plus they didn't want Andy not on two nights in a row in primetime since tonight Cosby Show mini is encoring 6-9pm.

TV Land's top shows are MASH, Andy Griffith, Gunsmoke, and Bonanza. And when they are airing, Three's Company and Good Times. Leave it to Beaver, Sanford & Son, Jeffersons and Green Acres do decent, but not top notch like those shows. Everything else is OK or just bad.

Pavanbadal, do you know anything about this? TheLink at TV Land.com posted this early this morning:

"You asked, TV Land listened"

"The Munsters" and "The Addams Family" have been reacquired and are scheduled to return (in limited airings at first) in March. Further details will be posted as they become available.

I believe they can get those shows very cheap from The Program Exchange. That is why when Munsters was not renewed, I knew it would be back at some point. I don't have full details yet. Will be posted in the coming weeks.

It will be nice to see Addams Family and Munsters again, too bad it has to be at the expense of so many other great shows.
