I never understood that. I know he was trying to make amends with Phil but yeah that was weird. What was even weirder was when he was still going on and Phil goes and just stares at Janet. I don't know, the first time I saw it I was like "Just kiss her already!" And why didn't she kiss him if he was that shy. Maybe he wouldn't have felt so awkward if she let her gaurd down.

I agree; I think Jack was accustomed to the gay act irritating the landlord; so maybe he used it to irritate Janet's boyfriend; and have a little fun. Why would Jack care what the boyfriend thought of him; he probably thought he wouldn't stick around anyway...

I always thought Jack Tripper (and I'm referring to the character here, not John Ritter, the actor) got a kick out of his gay act around the landlord (either one). Except in the beginning, of course, in Man About the House, but except in that episode, Jack never seemed to mind acting gay around Stanley Roper. And especially in later seasons, when the landlord became Ralph Furley, Jack even seemed to enjoy playing gay around him. After all, his supposed gay status did have a few advantages, one of which was that he could get Stanley or Ralph to leave by simply sitting down close to them or being physically close to them. And whenever Stanley or Ralph freaked out and ran away after Jack, for instance, tried to put his arm around them, I always thought Jack appeared quite happy and thought it was pretty funny. :lol:

So by the time Philip comes into the picture, when Jack Tripper has been keeping his gay act up for 8 years around Stanley and Ralph (both of whom were guys; remember, after a few early episodes, Helen knew, and Jack never had to play gay around her again) and using it to his advantage whenever he could, it'd be sorta natural for him to use it to try to drive another guy away.

I think this was the impression I got also, although I'd have to see that ep again to know for sure what he was trying to do.

I think Jack was just joking around. I don't think he disliked Phillip.
