View Full Version : Hunting for sport: Good or Bad?
Personally, I'm dead against hunting animals purely for sport, but I know that opinion is very much divided on this issue.
So I just wanted to get the groups opinion in general. Do you agree or disagree with it?
J
Brad Russ 12-06-2006, 02:01 PM I don't like it at all!!! I love animals so much, and seeing them being killed for no reason, or for stupid reasons, is just something I can't handle. I can't even watch those hunting shows on tv without wanting to cry. :(
Kay Scarpetta 12-06-2006, 02:04 PM I also agree with the two above mentioned opinions. I think it's horrible.
Now if you're the last one on earth and the only thing to eat is the cute little deer in front of you, well, we all have to eat... but if you're bored one day and go out killing animals for no reason, shame on you.

I hear that!
I hate to see animals suffer or die unnecessarily too. I'm a veggie because of that very fact. Not that I don't like meat eaters, It's just that I know that I can do without it.
I understand that for some people, catching and cooking their own food is a way of life, but I hate the idea of someone killing an animal just because they can.

Nicely put. :)

DarkLordDotan 12-06-2006, 02:15 PM Hunting animals keeps their populations in check. If this is not done their population will outgrow their food supply.
Have any of you ever seen an animal starve to death?

That's cool that you're a vegan. It shows that you're not just talk, and that you stand by your convictions. I can definitely respect that!!
gilligan fanatic 12-06-2006, 02:26 PM I don't hunt, but I got nothing wrong with others doing it. What is the difference if you buy meat in the store or if you kill it for food.
For just sport and leaving it there I would be more against it than hunting it for the meat.
Chocoholic 12-06-2006, 02:30 PM <assume voice of Mr. Burns from The Simpsons>
Some men hunt for sport.
Others hunt for food.
The only think I'm hunting for
Is an outfit that looks gooood!!!
Sorry, I couldn't resist ;) Seriously though, I think hunting for sport is just wrong and cruel. I don't understand how people can take pleasure in destroying an innocent living thing.
DarkLordDotan 12-06-2006, 02:33 PM Will someone explain to me how going into the field, killing an animal, dressing it and cooking it yourself is somehow worse than going to McDonalds and paying them to kill, dress and cook a different animal for you?
At least when you do it yourself you know it is being done right.
Think about that next time you bite into a hamburger.

I agree with that if you are doing it for food, but the question was for sport. I thought Jje3 was talking about if you went Fox hunting or something like that. I don't think you will eat a fox-lol

Thanks Gilligan,
As I said, this is a poll about hunting purely for sport, as a hobby. I understand that for some people, catching and cooking their food is a way of life.

And I haven't eaten a McDonalds in over 5 years.

There are often times reasons to hunt animals other than simply food. If left unchecked, almost all animals would outgrow their food supply, resulting in population damage to both whatever they eat and to themselves.
In addition there is the fact that many animals cause problems. Here in Texas wild boar destroy thousands of acres of land, land which is almost always unrecoverable. Now, the simple fact is I am not going to eat a wild hog. None the less, if I see one on my ranch it will be short for this world, before it can inflict serious damage.

I agree with that, but that is for an ecological reason, not for sport.
Lamont 12-06-2006, 07:14 PM if u eat what u kill--- fine
hunting for fun? BAD BAD BAD!!!!!!!!!!!
James"Thunder"Early 12-06-2006, 07:39 PM For food, yes, but for just to do it for sport I don't think that it is right.

I agree. My dad loves to go deer hunting, but he doesn't just, like, leave it there. He brings it home and makes it into jerky.

Shooting a deer and leaving the carcass is a violation of hunting laws in every state I know of.
Lamont 12-06-2006, 08:20 PM i personally know hunters who shoot it, kill it
take it home, save the antlers and mount the head
and toss it
total BS!!!
Dutabi84 12-06-2006, 08:43 PM It's not for me, but the fewer deer there are out there, the smaller chance we all have of whacking one with our cars, and that's fine with me.
Mr. Cranky 12-06-2006, 10:17 PM Gets my vote.
Lex Luthor 12-07-2006, 12:33 AM Hunting for sport, I think it should be allowed...
As long as the animal being hunted is a lion, tiger or bear (oh my!) and the hunter is equipped only with a slingshot in an open field. That would be an entertaining sport.
Trophy hunters or sport hunters would not be so into the sport if the animal got to fight back
Ireneparalegal 12-07-2006, 01:43 AM I despise it as a sport. I also despise bull fighting. Also, rodeos for the harm that is done to animals.
dragster58 12-07-2006, 06:44 AM I voted the 3rd option because hunting is OK, BUT how Ted Nugent does it: with a bow and arrow...THAT'S TRUE HUNTING!!!!
ponytail 12-07-2006, 07:05 AM I only believe in killing animals if it's for survival. My boss is a avid hunter and he told me he shot a elk and it ran off. Poor thing suffered a painful death.
KissMyGrits 12-07-2006, 08:22 AM If you plan on eating what you kill then it is perfectly fine. Hunting just for the sake of hunting is wrong and cruel.
I lived in Texas with my mom and stepfather and was taught to hunt at an early age. I could never bring myself to actually shoot anything.
I despise it as a sport. I also despise bull fighting. Also, rodeos for the harm that is done to animals.
I've got absolutely no sympathy for those matadors who get gored by the Bull. They bring it all on themselves, and the way they treat the Bull is barbaric.

I laugh when they get gored. You play with a bull, sooner or later you're gonna get the horns.

I hope your not being nasty to me Bobby, I'd just die!

Stormtracker TF 12-08-2006, 05:39 AM I would never hunt myself, simply because I find it cruel and I'd never be able to forgive myself for harming an innocent animal, but I don't necessarily denounce it. If you go out hunting and bring something home for dinner, it really isn't any different than eating out. You're just the one killing and cooking the animal. I'm not so sure I like the idea of just hunting for sport, though I suppose it's actually beneficial. Don't care either way.
Bobby F. 12-08-2006, 09:45 AM Nice 'n' snug
Sucks to be you then......:happyface
Zebra 3 12-08-2006, 01:40 PM I support real hunting, not the drunken idiots who end up shooting each other.

Drunken idiots removing themselves from the gene pool... This is a bad thing how?
MsOrange 12-08-2006, 03:12 PM I voted "I Love it!" but I don't actually hunt, but my dad and husband do. I see nothing wrong w/ it. They both suck at it anyway

Was that the best you could do? Even for you Bobby, that was WEEEEEK boy.
Was kindergarten hard today or something?
'portrait' - I think someone's got word of the day toilet paper. Good for you, making the effort. Next step is to actually read the definitions.
Homework for tomorrow: Find out the difference between a 'portrait' and a 'photograph' (Hint: Pencil vs Camera)
Come on kid, give me something Worthy of retaliation.
;)

Now this was weak. I think anyone with any sense could still understand the meaning. Of course when you've been labeled the ass end of a horse one can understand your inablity to understand or come up with a half-decent response.
Hmm Let's se what the definition really is:
por·trait /
–noun 1. a likeness of a person, esp. of the face, as a painting, drawing, or photograph: a gallery of family portraits.
Care to try again???
Since you're on the correction kick I think the word you were looking for is spelled "weak". How's that kindergarden class going for you??? You must have missed that week when you were out saving the whales or marching for the rights for petaphiles to molest young boys.
Homework for tomorrow: Find out the difference between 'week' and 'weak' (Hint: Mon.,Tues.,... vs You.):happyface

Good for you kid, you really tried that time, you'll be up to my standards before you know it. But it's time to correct your work, don't take it to heart, your still learning;
'inablity' - This isn't actually a word, I think you meant 'inability' (as in 'your inability to spell')
'se' - I think you were aiming for 'see'. 'Se' is the second part of the word per se (as in, your not an idiot per se, just not the sharpest)
Kindergarden - Ask your teacher, it's actually Kindergarten. a garden is the grounds outside of your home (as in, bobby's digging a bigger hole for himself than the one in the garden)
Petaphiles - This one I'm at a loss with. Is this some kind of sick animal hobby that you partake in. Hey, if you don't mind, keep your personal life out of the classroom?
Now, time for lesson 2: 'self portrait' a definition: 'A pictorial or literary portrait of oneself, created by oneself'.
Now that's one intelligent horse's ass, sort of like you, minus the intelligence of course.
Now homework for tomorrow, look up the word 'adaptation', uh, what the hell, I'll do it for you (these big words must be giving you a headache):
'Something, such as a device or mechanism, that is changed or changes so as to become suitable to a new or special application or situation'.
Example: Using the more reader friendly 'Weeeek' instead of 'Weaaaaak' or Weeeeeak'?
Also (now we're getting advanced here, take notes), I didn't actually use the word 'week' anywhere in my post, only 'Weeeeek', which (believe it or not wee bob) isn't an 'actual' word, it's a fictional (that means not real) word, used to add emphasis. Oops sorry, I'm going too fast, I know that this will all be going over your head right now, but some day, you'll get, I promise.
:happyface
out saving the whales or marching for the rights for petaphiles to molest young boys.
Actually, I personally believe that all pedophiles (I assume that's waht you meant) should be castrated, and then fed to the whales.
Most people would have been offended with you making a remark like that to them, but the fact that I've reduced you to a low that I didn't even think you were capable of, just fills me with satisfaction.
Honestly Bob, it's not even a challenge anymore.
If you don't put in the effort, it's really just me bullying you, and I don't want to do that, you're just a kid ;)

–noun 1. a likeness of a person, esp. of the face, as a painting, drawing, or photograph: a gallery of family portraits.
Meaning a painting, sketch, or photograph of oneself.. Gee that was hard to figure out. Keep trying though...
Tell me again how you screwed up with the word "week"? It's always fun to read the BS of someone when they continue to make themselves look like that horses arse. You gotta give me a least another 3 paragraphs on that one.
Now lets se whta other mestakes thta u cin find ta sho how yer jus "bullying me".
Lex Luthor 12-10-2006, 06:16 PM bor·ing (bôr'ĭng, bōr'-)
adj. Uninteresting and tiresome; dull.
repetitive adjective
doing, saying, the same thing too often
Janice 12-10-2006, 06:20 PM I'm assuming everyone knows the meaning of "Get back on topic please."
Dude111 10-31-2022, 01:32 PM Personally, I'm dead against hunting animals purely for sport, but I know that opinion is very much divided on this issue.Yes its cold blooded Murder and I dont know why anyone would do such an evil thing......
GentlemanJim 10-31-2022, 03:44 PM I believe that it's dishonest calling it a "sport" when humans use weapons they bought in some store. If they really want to prove man's mastery over his environment, they should be, imo, limited to weapons they made with their own two hands.
What seems highly out of order to me is the prevailing attitude holding that someone having compassion for animals is "weak" or lame in the head. I believe exactly the opposite is true. Probably because the critic has never taken the time to overcome their own ignorance regarding the sentience of wild animals.
