Some of you may know that "I Love Lucy" is my favorite show and I have been watching for over 45 years, but things still bug me about it. Irene and I have talked about several things so far.

The writers add elements in the show just for a particular episode. Anyone who knows the show can see how fake the setups are.

Examples:

1. Palm Springs- they all have so-called "bad habits" that we've never seen before and it's the only time they're shown
2. Men are Messy- Ricky comes home and makes a mess in the living room for the first and only time
3. Little Ricky Gets a Dog- a clock is conveniently on the kitchen stove for the first and only time
4. Lucy Fakes Illness- there is a picture of Lucy on the mantel for the first and only time
5. Never Do Business with Friends- Lucy hangs laundry in the kitchen for the first and only time
6. The Ricardos Change Apartments- Lucy crams the apartment with dozens of toys. Where were they before, and where did she get the money to buy all the playground equipment?
7. The TV only appears in episodes that feature it. Where is it the rest of the time?
8. Changing the Boys’ Wardrobe- Ricky and Fred are dressed in old clothes that they claim are their favorites. This is the first and last time we see them
9. Lucy’s Last Birthday- she claims she always gets the hiccups when she cries-it plays into the bit on the park bench- we’ve never seen hiccups before or after and she cries a lot
10. Fan Magazine Interview- before the interview the apartment is a mess, dishes in the sink and Lucy and Ricky are frazzled. Every other morning in the entire series Lucy and Ricky are fully dressed, she’s fixing breakfast and the kitchen is tidy.
11. The Quiz Show- They have bottles of booze on the shelf between the kitchen and living room for the first and only time. (for the bum)
12. The Anniversary Present- there is a calendar hanging in the kitchen with a date circled for the first and only time

You get the idea!

OMG!!!!! That is an awesome list. I am going to have to add to this list as I can think of them. Here is some:

We see the Mertzes kitchen once when the washing machine breaks down. We never see it before or after.

Lucy has a washing machine and it apparently is outside somewhere because we never see it in the apt.

We see the Mertzes bedroom once when the girls take a vacation from the guys. Lucy and Ethel sleep at Ethel's apt. while the guys sleep at the Ricardos.

Little Ricky apparently has a turtle and some fish as pets in the episode when Little Ricky wants to keep the puppy. We never hear or see abt these pets before or after.

Those are good ones, Irene. That pet episode always bothered me. Where did they come from? The fish was seen later in one episode: Lucy Hates to Leave. That's the one where the Ricardos have to move in with the Mertzes because their move to the country was delayed. They piled all of their boxes in the Mertz' living room and Fred delivered one of my favorite lines when he walked passed the fishbowl. He says "Hello, Moby." That always cracks me up.

I haven't really thought about the California, Europe or Connecticut episodes. There are probably more one episode wonders there too!

The main thing about the California episodes that always bugged me is how Lucy's mother (who I love, by the way) is conveniently absent so often. Is she off touring by herself while Lucy and Ethel have those adventures? She was obviously in Hollywood with them to act as a babysitter so Lucy doesn't have to have Little Ricky with her the whole time, but a lot of times I wonder where she is. Also, when she went with Lucy to nightclub celebrate her anniversary, they conveniently invented "Mrs. Anderson" (another hotel guest?) to babysit.

You are so right abt that goldfish and the bowl that we see when they are cramped in the Mertzes' apt. That came to me last night! LOL

We see Ricky's mother only once when she comes to visit and Lucy tries to impress her.

The trip to Cuba where we see Ricky's uncle who Ricky says practically raised him when he was a young boy in Cuba. We never heard abt this uncle before or after this episode.

When the Ricardos are trying to lease their apt. for the summer, they end up staying at the Mertzes while that man lives in their apt. and won't leave. Well, Ricky comes in at the end saying that his agent got him a gig in Del Mar, California for the summer. We never hear abt this trip ever! Also, if they did go to California for the summer, apparently the Hollywood trip was not the FIRST TIME they went to California. There is also another episode where Lucy mentions that she visited a Hollywood studio. Remember when she and the Mertzes are making that cowboy production in her living room for the talent scout? Well, Ethel asks how does Lucy know so much abt the filmining process. Lucy responds when she and Ricky were in Hollywood once and they viewed a studio set. So, according to this information, when Ricky went to Hollywood to be a star, this was their THIRD time going to California.

Ok, so what happened to Ricky's movie? We know there was a premiere in New York when they returned. What movie was it? In Hollywood the movie was apparently "shelved" and that another "project" was going to be done with Ricky. So, did he end up making the new movie or what??????

Why was $$$$ still tight if Ricky apparently made $$$$ from making this Hollywood movie?

Continuity was never a main concern of Jess', according to one of the DVD's production notes feature. His main concern was to make it a good show; I don't think nitpicking was a thing of the 50s. According to people I know who were alive back then, just being able to SEE the shows on a real television set was the jackpot!

Those are some good one episode wonders though! But about the "Fan Magazine Interview" nitpick, what if the Ricardos' were just having a bad day? I'm sure most of us are on a schedule that can be thrown off track occasionally. Let's face it, we're only human, it has to happen once in a while!

In "Lucy Thinks Ricky is Trying To Murder Her", Ethel states she learned how to "read" cards. She never mentioned this ability again.

We never see before or after the neighbors, Miss Lewis and Mr. Ritter, the old couple who Lucy is trying to get together. Also, where the hell did Lucy get all those kids from????

When Lucy fakes amnesia, she is wearing a full length fur coat. We never saw it again.

The Ricardos buy the Mertzes a television set for their anniversary. Do we ever see it again?

For the life of me I can't think what episode it is, but there is an episode where the Mertzes smoke with the Ricardos...this is the only time we see cigarettes in their mouths.

Perhaps they [the ILL PTB] 'have you' on that one. Remember the ep where Lucy knows all about her 'surprise baby shower' and Ricky can't watch the ball game on his television at home? He goes to the Mertzes and watches it there with Fred. ;) But true; we don't actually SEE it again.

Great additions! The episode where they all smoke is the first one, "The Girls Want to Go to a Nightclub." It is so bizarre to see Fred and Ethel with cigarettes. They don't really smoke them, but they look so awkward holding them, especially Ethel.

Irene you're right about the California thing. Lucy did mention she went through a Hollywood studio, and now you've got me wondering about the "movie" Ricky made after Don Juan was shelved!

I can put up with the far-fetched ideas like the starch vat, the freezer, and the loving cup, probably because they are unrealistically ridiculous, but the one-time setups bug me.

I agree with you. Those crazy things like what you mentioned are hilarious and it's like "who cares" it's funny. But it's true how things were just set up for one particular episode. It is annoying.

Thanx for the reminder of which episode it was when Fred and Ethel smoked. God, you are so right, Ethel did look awkward smoking. It didn't make sense for them to be smoking anyhow, what purpose was that for?

Yep, I am to this day wondering abt the movie. I could never figure that out. I mean, they did mention Don Juan back in New York, so you figure, that was the movie that ended up being made, but why was it shelved in Hollywood? Why did they say Ricky would be doing another project?

in The Diet episode, we see Butch, the Mertzes' dog. Never heard of him since that episode. Also, Fred stated to the Ricardos abt the NO PETS clause in the lease when Little Ricky brought home the puppy.

In some episodes Ethel can play the piano beautifully, however, in the one episode abt the girls and their Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League want to have a benefit dance, Ethel can't play for sh*t. LOL
Also, when they are in Connecticut, she also says she can only play one tune, COMING ROUND THE MOUNTAIN. Lucy says, "Can't you play Sweet Sue?" Ethel says "no." But remember that episode when the foursome were singing at the piano having a good time, Ethel was playing Sweet Sue. Later, they all got mad at each other for the loud noise the Ricardos were making (Breaking the Lease).

Lucy also stated in the Connecticut episode that she could only play Sweet Sue on the saxophone, but in an earlier episode, she played GLOW WORM.

In The Camping episode, Ethel can drive. In the California episodes, she can't.

In the Palm Springs episode the only habit that carried well was Ethel's
She always was an eater. In many episodes she's a gobbler. In one episode Ricky Said she's a growing girl, to which Fred said Yeah but she growing sideways. Yes there were episodes where you said, Where did they get everything. Just last week was Richardos changed apartments and I wondered where the toys were stored before. Lucy had a bike for a 10 year old lined up in the apt. She had enough stuff for the boy til he reached 10. oh well I still love lucy. My problem now is where to find her. I was seeing her at 5am but now I bump into Little house on the praire. Help.

LOL, we noticed that as kids in the 70s, watching I.L. Lucy... we asked ourselves the same question, "Didn't they have a TV set?"... we wondered if maybe the shows aired out of sequence and therefore some episodes took place before they got a TV and some took place afterwards...

Great observations on your list!

How about this one?! When Lucy wants to switch apartments, she and Fred and Ethel move EVERYTHING (both apartments) in half a day and the new apartment is all set up. Then the movers move things back (both apartments) the same day and everything is in its place. How do the moving men know how to set up the apartment? Any time I had to move it was weeks of agony!

Then in "Lucy Hates to Leave," there are hundreds of boxes crammed into the Mertz' apartment. How did the three of them move all that stuff before and organize it?

You're right, Coffeecup. We still love Lucy!

That too. How would the movers know where precisely everything went????

In the California episodes when Lucy wants to be in the fashion show, she mentions how she burns in the sun easily. This is the only time she references this.

On the European trip, when Lucy misses the boat and has to eventually use a helicopter, she is afraid of heights. She can't stand looking out the window, much less, getting out. She didn't have a problem with heights when she was on the world's tallest building (then the world's tallest) on the very top when she was playing a martian.

Yes, she also hid out on the window ledge in the episode in which she "tests Rickey's love" when he rushes home after a phone call from Lucy in which she tells Ricky there's a man with a gun coming after her. Once she was out there a few seconds, she seemed to be quite comfortable.

I can't remember, but did she hide outside the window in the "Superman" episode? Wasn't she going to 'fly' into the living room from the window ledge during Little Ricky's party ?

Yes, she was on the legde as Superman. How about in "Vacation From Marriage," when she and Ethel get locked on the roof in their nightgowns? Lucy puts a plank from one roof to another and then walks across it.

Also, it is very convenient that there is a plank on the roof. And what about the garden hose? I've never known a building like that to have running water on the roof!

Also, in "The Business Manager" Mrs. Trumbull has Lucy buy a can of all pet for her cat. I guess the Mertz's no pet policy wasn't strictly enforced!

Actually we do see Ricky's mother again in Cuba.I always wondered about Ricky's movie too they never said what it was about the only thing is later while they were in Florida we learn that Claude Akins was in it with him.
Another thing that stands out to me is that Ethel was born and raise in New Mexico but she has family-aunts and uncles living right there in New York-I guess on her mothers's side since her dad seems to be a native of N.M.
You also never see the Ramsay's when they did the hour long show
Another thing stands out to me in the early years Caroline Appleby seem to be equally good friends with Lucy and Ethel -they have the club meetings and play bridge and all but later they make it seem like she's mainly Lucy's friend and even have Ethel once saying "I thought she was one of your best friends?" for some reason this one bother's me than alot of the other things that don't add up.Maybe because it had always been played one way then later suddenly changed.

I guess when Lucy called little Stevie Appelby a funny looking monkey, that ended their "best friends" status.

Also, Ethel almost always wore dresses in the New York episodes, it wasn't until Connecticut we see her wearing more casual attire such as jeans. I know in the episode when the girls take up golfing the ladies wear pants...it just seems Lucy was seen way more often wearing pants than Ethel.

I just watched "Lucy Visits Grauman's," and I noticed how convenient it was that the Mertzes had a hammer in their hotel room when Ricky went to break the concrete off of Lucy's foot.

Also, how did Fred cut the bucket off of the block of concrete? And then he produced a large tub from the bedroom when they went back to return the slab. How would he know they would need that?

I guess part of their souvenir shopping included stocking up on hardware supplies.

 Good catches.
As for the hammer, my thinking is that they had the hammer for the souvenir hunt, just in case (removing the concrete slab, etc.)

Did you notice also that the bucket of cement around her foot was supposed to weigh an exorbenent amount, that would certainly have broken Lucy's ankle when her foot was hanging over the chair the way that it was. Also, she was able to move it around very easily while on the chair.

The large tub was when they were supposed to fill it with cement and water and mix it for when they were to fill the gap in the ground after removing the slab.

Madame X

Ok, Irene. I'll accept your explanations! With the weight of concrete, Lucy's foot would have snapped off in bed, they couldn't have lifted the slabs so easily, and with the tub stuck on her butt in the end, she couldn't have stood up!

They also were able to pick up the slabs before they dried!

No wonder you are confused. I included info from "Lucy and John Wayne," which is like part 2 of this adventure. Looking closer I could see that even though the concrete was still wet, there was a frame around it. It would be really heavy to pick up when it is still wet, though.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for keeping me on my toes!

I'm glad I found this thread. Just yesterday I was watvhing the episode where Lucy and Ethel are watching new neighbours move in, and when she sneaks in their apartment for a look at their stuff, she hears them talking like spies not knowing they are rehearsing for a tv show. The thing I found odd was that Ethel and Lucy were watching the new people move in from a window that was never again seen in the Ricardos apartment! In some episodes we see one where the piano stood, but in this episode we see one in front of the pass thru from the kichen and in front of where they had that little desk.

That window in the first apartment was situation in "the fourth wall" of the first Ricardo apartment. Note that, even though there were no other episodes where we actually see the window, it is still clear in many other episodes that it is there because you can see on the back wall what is supposed to be the sun shining through that window: there is a shadow image of blinds in the window.

Good question. I missed this post the first time around. I was re-reading this thread and seen this. WHERE WAS SHE?????

Also, Little Ricky's room in the hotel room, we NEVER SEE IT.

In the famous Harpo episode, this is the only time we see the kitchenette in the hotel room.

Little Ricky's high chair, we see it a few times but when he ISN'T using it, where the heck is it? That kitchen is waaaay too small to just put it away there.

Also, the kitchen at times had a table and two chairs. For episode or scene convenience, we only see the breakfast nook...where are the table and chairs then?????

In the Mertzes' apartment, I can't be sure, but I am almost certain, in the episode abt Madame X, Fred's favorite chair has a small table and lamp right there next to it. Ethel looks for the fingerprints on the silver cigarette case by that lamp. Is that lamp there ALL THE TIME or just there for that scene?

That lamp is featured in the previous episode, "Redecorating the Mertzes' Apartment," but it is behind the chair. Fred argues about keeping it, pulls the cord, and it shimmies down the pole. The table was not there.

In "Too Many Crooks," (Madame X), the table was there only for Fred to put the cigarette case down. Notice there is a pipe stand there but Fred never smoked a pipe. The chair is different even though Fred made a big stink about keeping the old one when Ethel wanted to get rid of it in the previous episode.

It always bothered me that they put a chair so close to the front door.

What about the episode where they all show their bad habits. We only see them in that episode. Never again did I see Lucy stir her coffee in an exaggerated way or Fred jingle the change in his pocket or Ricky loudly tap his fingers.

You are so right and good eye! We mentioned that one in the original post, but I am glad you brought it up again because it is one of the most obvious examples!

Ok, in Hollywood, Caroline (Lillian) Appleby visited Lucy on her way to Hawaii. SINCE WHEN WAS CAROLINE BLIND AS A BAT??????????????
We seen her before and she never wore glasses.

Also, when Lucy visits the eye doctor and he dilated her eyes, she returned home (how????) to a living room where there was a table and a lamp right behind the sofa. It wasn't that way before in that episode. It was never like that. It was set up obviously for the "mistake the lamp for Ethel" joke, but still, we never saw the furniture that way before or after.

I guess this would be a one episode wonder. It has been said, and an entire episode was made in regards to Fred being sea sick. He and Lucy rode the Staten Island Ferry to see if sea sickness pills would help Fred with his illness before their big trip to Europe via the Constitution.

Ethel once made a comment that her having too many waves in her hair causes Fred to be sea sick.

In the Florida trips episode, Fred had no problem being on a boat when the girls made a bet with the guys abt who would catch the bigger fish. No mention of sea sickness there.

Also, in the dummy episode where Lucy dances with that dummy that looks like Ricky, you will see a chair there that is only seen in this episode. It is a dark colored chair. Normally, a light colored chair with a low back is in that spot. However, for the scene where Ricky knocks over the dummy and sits there himself, Lucy comes up behind that chair and slaps Ricky silly behind the head. She thought it was the dummy. I guess they needed a high back chair for that scene to work.

I guess he got over his sea sickness by then, LOL.

Haha, I thought the same thing about the "bad habits"...EXCEPT I just recently bought the dvds and have been watching them from the beginning (currently on season 2) and noticed a couple of times Ricky HAS strummed his fingers...extremely awkwardly I might add. I don't remember the episodes, but I think they are both in season 1...I feel like he was in bed one of the times?

About the picture of Lucy on the mantel...I thought she herself put that picture up, as a "prop" since she supposedly thought of herself as a famous vain actress, know what I mean?

We do see the fish bowl in the episode where the Ricardos stay with the Mertzes until they can move into their house.

Ha! I love this stuff. I'm a born nitpicker at heart.

In reference to the "bad habits" episode, I think I recall seeing Fred with his hands in his pockets before. But he never jingled. lol

In the episode when Ricky watched the baby, Lucy was pacing in the Mertzes apartment like a bundle of nerves. Why was she so worried about the baby spending time with his own father? She was always leaving Little Ricky with Mrs. Trumbull, an elderly woman, and running off on her latest scheme. Of course he did leave the door open and the baby wandered down the hall. lol I think Ricky would've been more conscientious than that. It was just written that way to make him look bad.

In "Lucy is Enceinte" how come she needed a doctor to tell her what was going on? As soon as she got home she put on maternity clothes. ha, ha Okay, I know that one's not fair. Lucy was too far along at that point not to need them.

One of my favorite episodes is "Charm School". But did Lucy of all people really NEED a makeover? She obviously spent a lot on clothes and the beauty parlor, aside from being a natural beauty. It was hard to believe that she only scored a "32" on the charm test.

I went back and watched the apartment switching episode again. When they enter the Benson apartment, Mrs. Benson says that she was just mixing a meatloaf. Lucy says that it smells good. How can she smell raw meat? What is she, part lion? lol I guess it could be explained that she was just trying to soften up Mrs. Benson with flattery. Also, just a small change in set decorating continuity, there are two paintings in frames on the wall opposite the Benson front door. In the very next episode when the Ricardos are living there, the pictures are gone and there is a light fixture on the wall.

Rewatched the episode where Lucy plays matchmaker for Sylvia Collins and Eddie Grant. She calls Sylvia and says to meet Eddie in the lobby of the Sherry Plaza Hotel. How did Lucy know where Eddie was staying? The night he arrived Lucy only found out about him from Ricky moments before he came in the door. And Ricky was so angry at her matchmaking, it's doubtful he would have told Lucy where Eddie was staying. And from her conversation with Ethel, it was clear that they hadn't spoken the night before about Eddie.

Something else that changes depending on the episode is whether or not Ricky can cook. In "Ricky's Life Story" Lucy and Ethel are looking at his photo spread in LIFE magazine. Lucy points out the photo of Ricky making arroz con pollo and Ethel says she has seen him do that a dozen times. He must've taken cooking lessons because in the previous season "Job Switching" , he was a disaster in the kitchen. He made arroz con pollo and told Fred he watched his mother make it many times. He must not have noticed that you don't need four POUNDS of rice for four people. LOL Remember the rice "volcano"? And that morning he ruined a dozen eggs trying to make breakfast, so he had to get a take-out order from the diner.

In the episode "Ricky Watches the Baby" he made a Spanish omelette for breakfast. But in the previous season when he tried to make breakfast in bed for Lucy, he made a shambles out of the kitchen. Lucy held up the burnt waffle that he made to show Ethel and remarked, "You'd think they could've gotten one decent waffle out of this mess."

In "The Gossip" episode when they made a wager, Lucy won breakfast in bed for a month. Who would want breakfast served by someone who couldn't cook?

Wasn't the tv set seen in the episode where the 4 are watching a movie and they all comment whose in the cast. Might have been the radio quiz show episode. They mention is that mary pickford, no shirley temple, or virginia o'brien. They pass around the popcorn.
