'SEINFELD' SOARS ON RACIST RANT

November 30, 2006 -- THE K-K-Kramer scandal murdered Michael Richards' career - but it's doing wonders for sales of the latest "Seinfeld" DVD.

Season 7 of the popular sitcom is outselling the Season 6 set (released on the same day last year) by more than 75 percent, and more than 90 percent over season 5 at some online DVD retailers, according to TMZ.com.

On Barnes and Nobel's Web site, the DVD set is the sixth-best selling and Amazon ranks it in 12th place.

"I think the only explanation that could be is that there's a Kramer curiosity factor," says Dr. Robert Thompson, director of Syracuse University's Center for the Study of Popular Television.

"I can understand that, after what happened, there's a resurgent interest in 'Seinfeld,' and that seems to be expressing itself through people watching the show more and buying more DVDs.

"Boy, is it ever weird to watch 'Seinfeld' now," Thompson added.
Richards "carries baggage, when you see this happy-go-lucky guy barge into that apartment and talk about being 'master of his domain.' That really means something different now."

A video-phone recording of Richards exploding in a hateful, racist rant while performing his stand-up comedy act earlier this month leaked onto the Internet just days before the season 7 DVD set was released.

The fact that Jesse Jackson called for a boycott might have helped sales somewhat....

From season 6, I particularly liked "The Big Salad", "The Chinese Woman", "The Race", "The Switch", "The Label Maker", "The Doorman" and "The Jimmy".

From seaon 7, I liked "The Wink", "The Hot Tub", "The Soup Nazi", "The Secret Code", "The Gum", "The Rye", "The Caddy" and "The Calzone"..

Overall, I like season 7 slightly better than season 6...but it's interesting to see such a huge increase in sales for S-7...

That is awesome. I plan on getting it. Who wanted to get it more after Jesse's Boycott statement? Just curious

Of course Season 7 will sell well. It is the second best season and Larry David's last. It had been a year before the previous set was released (this one should have been released in May) and people were not going to listen to some moronic "reverend" when they have been looking forward to this set for so long. Long live Seinfeld!

Yeah, that's right...I forgot that this release had been delayed... I think that the original plan was to release season 7 in May of this year, then possibly release seasons 8 and 9 together in November, or at least, Season 8.

I think it is doing so well because one, it was one of the greatest seasons, two bad press can be good press, and three if you tell people to do something such as boycott they are going to do the complete opposite.

I won't be buying it. They can forget that. I see no real purpose. If others want to, they should be able to without others getting on their case.
