View Full Version : Why is 21 the legal age to drink?
Janice Johnson 11-22-2006, 03:41 PM You have to be at least 21 in order to drink..................... But you can fight in the army when you're 17/18(I forget which one it is), and die for your country, but you can't enjoy a drink. You can smoke tobacco and choose the next president of the United States, when you're 18, you can drive on the road, putting other people's lives in danger, and you can hold a job when you're 16, but you can't drink. And why can't a 20 year old drink? At 20, you are a full grown ADULT, no longer teenager(18 and 19 are still considered teenagers, just "grown"teenagers). Why the hell do you have to wait one more year to drink?
EmoJoe 11-22-2006, 03:43 PM because a 17 year old or 18 year old wouldnt be "enjoying a drink" most likely, they'd be chugging down 10+ bottles of beer.
18 isnt mature enough to make it the legal drinking age, IMO. its fine where it is.
Jenya 11-22-2006, 03:45 PM The drinking age in Alberta is 18. Same as Quebec. :)

People do that at ages 22, 23, 24, 25, 26....Getting drunk just to get drunk has no age limit.
And when your 17 and 18 a lot of kids are still living with their parents and if something were to happen most likely the parents would be held accountable for their actions.
Lamont 11-22-2006, 04:25 PM the truth is
teenagers are NOT responsible when it comes to alcohol
look at the statistics
they drink more, drive faster and get in more wrecks
might not be EVERY teen but statistically it would be crazy to lower the age
Brian Damage 11-22-2006, 04:29 PM They should raise the age to 25.

true, but teenagers do that more then anyone else, im sure.
Lamont 11-22-2006, 04:41 PM well they wont raise the age to 25 ever
why? because the 21-25 age group consumes a HUGE PORTION of the alcohol sold
too much $$$ to lose
Brieannas21 11-22-2006, 04:57 PM true, but teenagers do that more then anyone else, im sure.
Have you gone to a College party, or a frat and sorority party. There are people there who are 23, 24, 25 who are getting drunk just to get wasted. That's why I said drinking just to get drunk has no age limit. When your drunk you can act just as rude and stupid as a 18 yr old.
Karen* 11-22-2006, 05:24 PM I'm writing my research paper on this for English class. I don't think they should lower the drinking age to 18 because it will give teenagers more of an excuse to be more reckless.
jpcanes 11-22-2006, 05:33 PM You have to be at least 21 in order to drink...................
Legally ;)

i strongly agree.
and the less drunken ****ing idiots there are in the world, the better.
theshark8777 11-22-2006, 05:56 PM The drinking age was 18 until the 1980s. There was obviously a reason it was raised again.
Chelsea 11-22-2006, 05:59 PM They should raise the age to 25.
Only if the insurance companies will make the big rate discount/ability to get a decent rental car thing kick in at 21 instead of 25 in exchange...
Mr. Stefani 11-22-2006, 06:27 PM It doesnt effect me. Turning 21 isn't going to be any fun for me. I drink at bars, most in NY dont care if you're 21 since its 18 to get in. It's not hard to drink if you're not legal.
cmcb06 11-22-2006, 06:33 PM I've been boozing since I was 15. So for 4 years i've been doing it, and getting away with it. Hehehehe.

I believe in some states, it was 19 until around there, too.
BUT
You forgot to mention that not ALL states observed a low legal drinking age limit up until the 1980s. My parents were born and raised here in North Dakota, and the legal age here has ALWAYS been 21. My dad didn't turn 21 until 1975, and my mom in 1978. So, when the national age limit went into effect in the early 1980s, North Dakota wasn't affected by this change, since it was already set at 21.
Personally, I like that the limit is 21. I wasn't happy about that as a teen, but I got over that quickly. I turned 21 several months ago, and take every opportunity to rub it into peoples' faces that I would rather buy REAL beer than the cheapo stuff they buy for parties. But then, I'm not into the partying scene... but I do like my alcoholic drinks. The GOOD stuff. Anyway, I digress.
I got over my "ZOMG LETS GET DRUNK" phase quickly... but the matter of things is, it happens to anyone, anybody of any age. It doesn't matter if you're in your teens or in your 50s. I have seen middle-aged guys getting plowed at the bar, and it's not a pretty sight.
Regardless, drunk driving is a VERY serious problem not to be reckoned with, and I really don't think the age should be lowered. It's always the drunk that survives, and always the innocent victims that die as a result of the drunk driver. So that is something I would like if more people focused on it, instead of being so damn concerned over lowering the stupid age. If you don't like it, ****ing tough beans.

ditto. turning 21 really didn't change a thing.

Okay, but why don't they lower it to 20? an ADULT, no lon ger a teen, and is just one year away from 21. Why the 21? Why not just 20?
Hollow 11-27-2006, 06:07 PM Why the 21? Why not just 20?
why does it matter?
Central Perk 11-27-2006, 08:17 PM I think it should be lowered to 18. I think part of the reason young people get drunk is because of the allure of breaking a law and being sneaky. Perhaps it would be more routine if it was lowered to 18. It's too bad our attitude toward alcohol can't be like it is over in Europe.
hippiechick60 11-28-2006, 01:20 PM well its always been a touchey subject i know...but a lot of you are right i think i mean yeah you can join the army when your 17 or 18 but i think thats your "own choice" you know what i mean!!? but drinking well i think its just fine at 21 i mean i don't drink and i'm 25 and i had no desire to drink even when i was 18 and i knew i could do anything i wanted i think you have to be more "grown up" to drink!
Dude111 10-27-2025, 10:56 PM They should raise the age to 25.It doesnt matter what age they put it at.. People are still gonna drink it @ 13 if they wanna!!
I think it tastes God aweful and I dont know how anyone can stand it!!
Coffeecup 10-29-2025, 04:39 PM They could raise it to age 75 and I wouldn't bother me for I hate to drink alcohol. I did hear new stats that drinking anything now a days, isn't good for you.
Yong Fang 11-11-2025, 05:31 AM I for one thinks there ahould be one age of majority, whether this is 18 or 21 or in between. Anyone under this age is a minor and not have full rights, but anyone over this age does.
This was way back in the 1980’s but had an acquaintance in college who was ARRESTED at twenty buying a bottle of wine. Went to jail, fingerprinted, probably had to get bonded out and go to court. Supposedly he was buying the wine for his girlfriend. I don’t know in his case but the clerk is usually arrested also (and have seen this too)
In China where I live, there is no drinking age. A teenager can legally drink in a bar. A child can buy alcohol. Guess what, I have been here over twenty years, been to a lot of bars, and have never seen a Chinese high schooler in one, ever. The only time I ever saw teenagers drink were some white American kids in Shanghai who openly admitted being high schoolers. I found it amusing but my friend didn’t like that and made me leave.
But in Chinanvery few teens and young adults drive, and all the DUIs and alcohol related crashes was the push to make the age 21.
Dude111 11-11-2025, 06:15 AM I dont see how anyone can drink it. It tastes aweful :D
