What a strange little episode this was. I just watched it last night. Was it meant to be a spin-off? It seems typical for show in the 80s to use one of the final episodes of the season to usher in a new series. Did anything ever come of this show? Don Rickles was okay but the funniest line was when he said something about Nell buying shark to get 2 for the price of one and she said "Very funny" in an annoyed way. The first part of the episode had the Kaniskys but the rest was devoted to the girl and Max (Don Rickle's character).

It must have been a pilot for a spinoff with Don Rickles. It never became a series though.

It was definitely a spinoff attempt.. the only one for Gimme A Break apparently.

The authors of The Sweeps say that "the pilot was of such negligible substance that it collapsed of its own weightlessness."

I had a feeling this episode was a spinoff attempt, it was very strange seeing Don Rickles name in the opening credits. I just watched it today and it was horrible. Definitely the worst episode of the 2nd season.

The 3rd season episode "The Center" had that "spinoff" feel too, esp. since it had a bunch of other actors (including Whitman Mayo and Ray Walston), with only Nell and Grandpa appearing.
