I think all it says on wikipedia about the theme song/music is that it made striking use of a Phrygian mode. A Phrygian mode is:

"named after the ancient kingdom of Phrygia in Anatolia. In Greek music theory it was based on the Phrygian tetrachord: a series of rising intervals of a whole tone, followed by a semitone, followed by a whole tone. Applied to a whole octave, the Phrygian mode was built upon two Phrygian tetrachords separated by a whole tone. This is the same as playing all the white notes on a piano keyboard from D to D: D E F G | A B C D. Placing the two tetrachords together, and the single tone at bottom of the scale produces the Hypophrygian mode (below Phrygian): G | A B C D | (D) E F G. Placing the two tetrachords together, and the single tone at the top of the scale produces the Hyperphrygian mode (above Phrygian), which is effectively the same as the Hypodorian mode: A B C D | (D) E F G | A. The original NBC and CBS versions were composed by Gary Malkin and Michael Boyd. Gary is a great composer, he actually has a CD out called "The Great Smoky Mountains." Michael Boyd worked out of San Francisco a few years back for the Annex Recording studios. Not sure how the two met for Unsolved Mysteries.

For the later, lifetime version, Gary Malkin came back and co-wrote the theme with Dan Alvarez. I'm not to familiar with Dan. All of the in-show cues were by Gary Malkin, with Michael Boyd co-writing a few.

I also know that there is a CD out called something like "The Best TV Themes of All Time." I've actually listened to a big chunk of it in the music store... it's got theme songs from The Golden Girls, All in the Family... and Unsolved Mysteries.

I wish I could remember the title better, but I do know that there is a CD with the theme music out there...

I forgot about that CD, it's from TVT Records and the title is "Cable Ready" Vol 7. It has the main title theme from "Unsolved Mysteries" and I think it's the NBC version. I'm sure you can still get it online or from a music store...

IMO, the most chilling TV music ever is the UM closing credits theme during the Lifetime episodes right before the Cosgrove-Muerer logo, which concludes w/ a final "bong" like a huge bell tolling then a sprinkling/scattering of notes. It never ceases to creep me out and stick w/ me long afterward, especially if the final segment is a missing persons or unsolved murder case.

Just an anecdote. I was at a recent Flyers game, and there was a questionable penalty called on Philly. During the replay on the monitor (which showed that there was, in fact, no infraction) they played the UM theme. I think I was one of the few attendees who got the reference and the joke.

I think they should have played it when showing highlights of the Flyers' goaltending this season with the "Missing" title card.
