Wells, Williams to Wash Up in Gilligan's Island: The Musical in Florida

By Zachary Pincus-Roth (zpincusroth@playbill.com)
14 Nov 2006

Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann in the television series "Gilligan's Island," will star in a Florida production of Gilligan's Island: The Musical as the millionaire's wife, Mrs. Howell, a.k.a. "Lovey," Variety has reported.

Barry Williams — who played Greg Brady on "The Brady Bunch," which was created by "Gilligan" creator Sherwood Schwartz — will star as her husband, Mr. Howell, "the millionaire."

Gilligan's Island: The Musical has already played in various cities around the country during the last five years. This production will play the Tennessee Williams Theatre in Key West, FL, on Jan. 19 and 20, 2007, and the Coral Springs Center for the Arts in Coral Springs, FL, from Feb. 2-11.
The musical's book was written by Schwartz, along with his son Lloyd Schwartz, who produced "The Brady Bunch Movie," among other films, and has written and produced several "Gilligan's Island"- and "Brady Bunch"-related television movies.

The 22 original songs are by Schwartz's daughter and son-in-law, Hope and Lawrence Juber. Hope guest-starred on "The Brady Bunch," and Lawrence is a composer and guitarist who was a member of Paul McCartney's band Wings.

The television series "Gilligan's Island" ran from 1964 to 1967, and its legend has stayed alive via constant reruns, three television movies, two cartoon series and the TBS reality show "The Real Gilligan's Island." Dawn Wells agreeing to play Mrs. Howell really surprises me. Im not too sure if I'd like to see that.

Dawn Wells is 68 years old. I'm the first to admit that she looks FANTASTIC, but she has the good sense to realize she's not Mary Ann's age anymore.

She was Mary Ann on Meego, and that was 9 years ago, so she was just about 60 playing her.

Kind of strange, but Natalie Schafer was 64 when GI started so Dawn Wells is too old to play Mrs Howell too.

Glad to see she is doing work though. I would hate to see her just fade away.

Funny I was thinking that Dawn is now past the age Natalie Schaefer was on GI, and that now she could play Mrs. Howell! This is a show I would really like to see, although since I live in California it's a bit far away. :/ I'm somewhat surprised she's in a musical because I thought that Dawn couldn't sing very well. Does she sing?

I don't know, I know she never pursued a carer like Tina Louise. I don't think she has a singing part in the Producer though because her only part on stage everyone was singing Neither a Borrower to her.

I believe she did a few stage productions after GI, but I am not sure if she did any singing or just acting.

I remember Dawn mentioning years ago what a bad singer she was and that they hired Jackie DeShannon to do the singing for her in the "Honeybees" musical number. She also mentioned that when they were singing "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow," to Gilligan, her bad singing voice kept throwing the others off key.

Wow-lol

I never knew that.

...starred Bronson Pinchot....and the less said about it, the better. It was on CBS for about three weeks before it was pulled back into the vaults for good (??). Dawn Wells' appearance was probably the "highlight" of that series.

What kind of "makeup" is Dawn going to wear when she portrays "Mrs. Howell"
in that musical? And how could Barry Williams ever "top" Jim Backus? If Sherwood and his family are behind it, then it has a better chance of succeeding than any "knockoff", I'm sure!

I hope it someday plays California, so I can see it! Doesn't matter if Dawn is in it, or not! It sounds fun!

I was in a musical theatre class at college this past Fall, and we have to come up with songs from musicals to perform. I'd be interested in the sheet music so I could sing a number from it. It's fun finding obscure or new stuff to do.

My other musical theatre quest is a 1996 play about Princess Diana, Prince Charles and Camilla. It was yanked after Diana's death --but it had Camilla as a space alien, and I HAVE to see that!

 :brent

did anybody who lives in Florida have an opportunity to catch a performance. Will be other performances next Weekend, too.

I wrote to Dawn at the venue. Will repost if I get a response from her.
