I would never advocate piracy because we all know it's illegal. But lets suppose you have purchased a dvd from best buy and want to make a backup for you own personal use and you find that shrink just won't copy it.
My friend sent me this link and it's touted to copy and remove the protection. Of course it's for you own personal use and not to make illegal copies.
Free down load.

Thanks for that link Harvey. One thing I'd love to know how to get rid of is the VHS Macrovision protection (again, for my own personal use). I have a very old retail VHS tape, from about '85 or '86, of a very rare movie called Thunder Alley. The quality is okay, but I can tell the tape is wearing out. I'd love to protect this tape on DVD for my own personal use, but of course, my DVD recorder won't copy it. I didn't even know that they started using such copyright protections back in '85, I thought they came around more in the late '80s.

There is a item called a stabilizer that does the trick. Removes protection.
Here is another link a friend sent that even looks better for removing protection.
Take a look at AnyDVD ( http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html ). It runs in the background and allows your system to see the DVD directly so that you can use any program you want to copy (for your own personal archiving).
