Police are investigating a drive-by shooting involving people waiting in line for a video game.

Dozens of people camped out in front the Best Buy store on Nicholasville Road. They're hoping to get their hands on a Sony PlayStation 3 console. But the wait turned serious when someone drove by and fired shots at people waiting in line.

Four people were hit by the BB pellets, including 27 NEWSFIRST reporter Elizabeth Dorsett. She was interviewing someone in line at the time. None of them were seriously hurt.

Police came to the store to investigate. They're still looking for a suspect.
Lexington Police say they'll stay at the Best Buy to make sure people in line stay safe.

The PlayStation 3 goes on sale Friday morning at eight. The consoles are selling for more than $600 a piece.

Yeah, I was actually considering standing in line for three days myself for that very reason. I'm not even that into video games, but the thought of making a possible $1,400 profit in only 3 days, is pretty damn appealing to me. Those people waiting in line really aren't as stupid as they seem.

Anyway, that's messed up that someone would be shooting at them. Hopefully those idiots get caught!!

Wish I had one to sell them for $5,550! That would make a good start to my daughter's college fund.

People get ridiculous when these things come out. I always pre-order what I want and if it's not available for pre-order, I wait until the rush is over.

NEW YORK - Tight supplies of Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news).'s PlayStation 3 game console led to rowdiness at several stores when it went on sale Friday and tempted new owners to sell their consoles for a profit to those who hadn't braved the throngs of sharp-elbowed shoppers.

In Putnam, Conn., two gunmen tried to rob people lined up for the console, and shot one who refused to surrender his money. Michael Penkala, 21, of Webster, Mass., was wounded in the chest and shoulder. He was in stable condition Friday with injuries not believed to be life threatening, according to Connecticut State Police.

In Fresno, Calif., police arrested two people and threatened to use Tasers to break up a crowd that rushed a store and trampled people in the parking lot.

To get the attention of an unruly crowd of about 350 people, police fired a paint ball at the ground outside a Target store in Henrico, Va.

Sergio Deynes, 26, who had camped out at a Best Buy in New York since Monday to get his PS3, said the people with him at the front of the line were "beautiful."

"It was the people in the back who were desperate who messed things up for a lot of us," Deynes said.

The market for second-hand PS3s flourished: Deynes' cousin, who camped with him, immediately sold his PS3 for $2,500.

On eBay, the two PS3 models, which cost $500 and $600 in the stores, were selling for between $1,000 and $3,000.

"Hearing all these numbers definitely made me very conflicted," Deynes said, but "thinking of all that I went through, I'm not getting rid of this thing ... Last night the rain messed up our tents and we got soaked and we had to sleep in the freezing cold."

In Los Altos, Calif., Justin Kwong was looking at an unopened PlayStation 3 box and finding that the money outweighed the pleasure of being one of the first with a PS3. He bought it Friday morning after three nights in a sleeping bag outside the Mountain View Best Buy.

"I've seen what they're going for ... so I'm thinking probably of selling, because it's such a large profit margin," he said.

Meanwhile, technology research company iSuppli Corp. reported taking apart a $600 console, and finding that it probably costs Sony $840 to make.

ISuppli notes that it's common for manufacturers to take a loss on the hardware, calculating that they'll make it up with game sales. Also, component costs should come down in the future.

"Still, the size of Sony's loss per unit is remarkable, even for the video-game console business," iSuppli said.

The company called the console "an engineering masterpiece," more akin to expensive corporate hardware than a consumer-level computer.

In Philadelphia, Glenn Giersdorf had his PS3 up and running but didn't see it as being an immediate step up from Microsoft Corp.'s
Xbox 360 console, which went on sale a year ago. He said a new Xbox title, "Gears of War," actually looked a little bit better than the equivalent PS3 game, "Resistance: Fall of Man."

This is natural, Giersdorf said, as games that are available for the launch of a console generally aren't as good as games that come out later, when developers have learned to take advantage of all the features of the hardware.

"By 2008, Sony is going to be showing that the console has more ability and power than the 360," said Giersdorf, 35.

Giersdorf is also getting a Wii, ostensibly for his 4-year-old son.

"That's how I'm kind of selling it to his mom," Giersdorf said.

The launch of the Wii is expected be less dramatic than the PS3 launch, because Nintendo will have about 10 times as many units available as Sony.

Nintendo's fan base is also smaller. It sold 21 million units of its previous console, the GameCube, compared to 110 million for Sony's
PlayStation 2. But it's quite possible that the Wii could grab some market share from Sony with its family-friendly games, $250 price tag and innovative motion-sensing controller.

"It's very, very tempting to a parent," said Giersdorf. "The graphics don't look as nice as the PS3 or 360, but the graphics are fine."

Had I had the money to do so, I would have waited in line. Huge profits for anyone who gets one who wants to part with it

One other reason I am not getting a PS3 is that the video game makers are lobbying to have the commonsense violent game laws on the books overturned.

But there is a risk involved as well. With the original Japanese release almost all of the original buyers were resellers and they tried to sell them right away at a huge profit. Many of them got less than market value, that is of course till they waited until the US release was finished and now that is all that is left.

People are always crazy for new things when they first come out. Yes, I bought a game console and a game on that same dreaded day. But it wasn't no PS3, though. It was the XBox 360, instead. And, man, was the lines chaotic for those wanting that dang Playstation 3. I'm not even a PS fan, so why would I want a hyped up, over-expensive game console? XBox 360=$399.99 at the dot vs. Playstation 3's $599.99+. So screw Playstation 3. XBox 360 will smoke the PS3.
:D Maybe the XBox 360 needs to be the one who shoots the Playstation 3 with a BB gun. LOL:lol:

It's apparently a real headache for Sony. They've had to keep their prices down to the $600 mark to compete with the other systems on the Market, but it there's about $700 worth of hardware in the machines, not to mention, marketing, distribution, etc...So they're loosing profit.

As long as Sony is forcing Blu Ray on me, I'll never get a PS3.
I'll stick with the Wii.
