View Full Version : Had Lecy G. been in the role of Becky, would she have moved into the trailer park?
ThomasE 11-15-2006, 06:59 PM That is the question. It just seemed to me that Becky 1/3 would not have done that. It seemed as thought the writers wrote the character based on the traits of the actresses that played the role. I don't think that Lecy's Becky would not have done that. Not in a million years! What do you guys think?
Ireneparalegal 11-15-2006, 07:08 PM I am still upset that the writers had the second Becky tell Roseanne "We're going to try and have a baby..." AND ROSEANNE WAS HAPPY!!!!!!!!
I remember the OLD ROSEANNE AND DAN worried that Becky would end up pregnant after she married Mark.
Things just started getting weirder with the writing when the old Becky stepped out of the picture. It was no longer the same show.
I hated the trailer park idea, yet, Mark wasn't making great money, so it was real to show them not "living it up".
Brieannas21 11-15-2006, 07:15 PM Irene I totally agree, why would Roseanne want Becky to have a baby when Becky and Mark weren't even making enough money to take care of themselves?????? That was totally stupid.
My question is, Did Mark and Becky move back in with Roseanne and Dan after Roseanne won the lottery? They were always there eating and watching tv.
ThomasE 11-15-2006, 08:03 PM No. They still had that the trailer. I can assure you, Brie. Becky #1 would not have been bubbly and overjoyed about moving into that trailer like the second.
Ireneparalegal 11-15-2006, 08:18 PM No. They still had that the trailer. I can assure you, Brie. Becky #1 would not have been bubbly and overjoyed about moving into that trailer like the second.
But Becky LOVED MARK. SHE WANTED TO BE WITH HIM. SHE COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT HIM WHICH IS WHY SHE MARRIED HIM...:puke:
She was such a whiny brat blaming Dan for the bike shop failing.
ThomasE 11-15-2006, 08:40 PM Well, Ms. Irene, that may be the case, but I cannot see that girl all excited about that trailer. She loved him in the beginning. I am really disappointed. It seemed to me that Becky smartened up in season eight. Season nine, Lecy did not come back and Sarah was back and looked like she was more of a walk-on to me. I can see why the ratings dropped.

True. I can't see that myself. However, a lot of things occurred on Roseanne during that time and after that didn't make a lot of sense. Bad writing and Roseanne should have had her head on better to see where the show was going...DOWNHILL. Her making the character of Mark even dumber than he was, was one of the worst things to do. Also, not having the Becky character go to college. She wasn't pregnant, she could be married and still go to college.

That's why, for me after the 3rd season it's a little hard for me to watch Roseanne. Becky was SOOOOOOOOOOO Damn bratty and all of that back talk that she was doing. I don't know who would have put up with that without slapping the taste out of her mouth. The only episode where I could relate to Becky was the Birth control episode.
Yeah and what in the world was with Becky not being in College???? She would rather work as a waitress and put Mark through trade school, than her enrolling into college herself. I'm all for supporting your man and whatnot but PLEASE, the both of them could have gone to school and worked at the same time. I think Roseanne went a little loopy when she got with Tom.

Bingo! I think her divorce from Tom left her so angry and bitter that she retaliated against the men on the show. It had to have been, I mean, look at how the guys became DUH!
I agree with you on the "supporting your man" idea. They both could have done something better with their lives, especially since there was NO KIDS involved.
ThomasE 11-16-2006, 02:40 AM I do like the later seasons more than the first but some things got extremely ridiculous. Credibility was lacking.
Ireneparalegal 11-16-2006, 03:44 PM It seemed to start with all that plastic surgery. LOL
ThomasE 11-16-2006, 09:20 PM YES! I was thinking the same thing. I noticed how Roseanne looked different. I thought that she was looking really good. At the same time, it seemed as though she had a personality change she was more of 'you know what" than ever before. The personalities of the characters changed a lot, David, Mark, Becky(switcheroo) Jackie, Bev, Leon to a degree, Nancy, Audrey(Dan's Mother) Darlene and Roseanne. Dan and DJ were pretty much the same. It was really something. I love season six, though, but things were just out there. Season Nine went to hell in Roseanne's picnic basket. LOL.
Will and Grace Fanatic 11-17-2006, 03:25 PM I think there are lot of things that happened to the Becky character that wouldn't have happened it Lecy had been in the part all 9 season. One of course would be living in a trailer park. That would be to humilating for her, since she tries to be an over achiever. She also would have never worked at Buns.

There was no reason for her to work at all. According to what Mark said and what the original Becky told her family, is that Mark was offered a great job and would be making bank. Ok, so she married him and went to live with him so he could get this job. Why didn't Becky ATTEND COLLEGE!????? She did NOTHING! Such a sad state for this character. Working at Buns was the lowest for her. Especially wearing that outfit, Becky would have objected quick!
Roseanne, was not the same person. She went from this "real" mother to someone who was not very happy most of the time. Even during the pregnancy, the Roseanne character was a (excuse me) TOTAL BITCH! She didn't seem happy, she seemed cynical, she seemed bothered by everyone. I don't know why Roseanne Barr made this character change so much. Her face was always serious, even times when there should have been some joy or laughter, she was always cynical. It really became a nuisance to watch this character.
As for Jackie, God, she went from a cute looking lady to some trucker dude! She wore no make-up, her hair was too damn short, we never saw her wear a dress again, she also became some cynical person who wasn't happy with a good man like Fred. Jackie was always bitching she would never find a good man...here was Fred and she blows him off.

I was watching Roseanne last night when they met their new neighbors the Bowmans (sp?) and I loved how Roseanne was acting. That is the Roseanne I know and love.

Jackie wore a dress when she dated the Prince
What was strange was, Darlene was wearing dresses, WHAT IN THE HELL WAS THAT ABOUT????
ThomasE 11-21-2006, 10:22 PM You are right, Brie. Jackie wore a dress and she looked good in the short dresses in the later eps. It is like what Ms. Irene said, everything changed up. I still loved the show but in 1994 thru 1995(season), it just seemed like it was a BI**H FEST. Everyone was at each other's throats. Give us some air people.

B*tch fest!!!! Good description. Even though she wore that dress with the Prince, that was such a horrid storyline!

That's why after like the 3rd season I really didn't care for a lot of the episodes all that much. Becky was hardly around then you had the whole thing about Darlene mood changing (how long can a teen stay in a depressing mood.) Roseanne's hair, nose, face and attitude changed. That's why Seasons 1-3 were my favorites because they really seemed like a family and not a house full of roommates
LivinLaarge 11-23-2006, 08:48 AM The first becky wouldnt have done it but the 2nd one was a little slow. to me she acted like a uhhh..... Dumb blonde (no offense to any blondes because not all blondes are dumb).LOL
coffield3 12-03-2006, 09:52 PM boring lol
Overdose 03-28-2007, 05:05 AM In season 8 when Lecy returns, Darlene and Becky fight about Roseanne's baby-shower. Becky held her own against Darlene and wouldn't back-down for one second. When I saw that, I was like, "The old Becky I love is back!" In seasons 6-7, I saw this Becky who would let Darlene and others stomp all over her. But when Lecy returned to acting as Becky in season 8, I saw the bitchy Becky I grew to know and love.
ThomasE 03-30-2007, 02:36 PM In the second Becky's defense, she held her own when it came to Darlene when they both were taken by Dan to the lunchbox to show Rosey that he had gotten them to get along. Becky #2 could be loudmouthed and a witch with a capital B when she wanted to. She was when it came to her parents and to Mark. She did it with Darlene that one episode. There was potential. Lecy was there for me. She played the role so well.
GeorgiaboyJeff! 03-30-2007, 08:33 PM I don't think Mark and Becky were intended to stay together. But since Lecy wanted to go to college, they had to find a way to have Becky's character leave. If Lecy stayed throughout the series, I highly doubt Mark would have been around long. I don't even think the series would have lasted as long as it did if it weren't for the changes.

I think Roseanne wanted to show that even smart girls make horrid decisions, which is why she had the Becky character marry Mark.
The fact that Lecy really went to college in real life, the writers could have had Becky receive an academic scholarship (along with grants and/or loans) and "go away" to college, that would have also explained her absence. It was done with Darlene, it could have been done with Becky. But like I stated above, Roseanne probably wanted to make that drastic change with Becky, seeing that the show was as close as to reality as you could get with a sitcom.
One reason I loved this show was because of the realism she brought forth. The bratty kids, the fact these kids didn't wear designer clothes, they didn't have the best of everything, like we seen over and over on too many sitcoms. If you see an episode of any 80's sitcom, you get that 80's feel just by looking at the clothes, hairstyles, etc. I don't get that with Roseanne, the kids LOOKED AND DRESSED LIKE NORMAL KIDS.

I don't think Becky as played by Lecy would have ever moved into the trailer home. It is evident to me in the season 8 episode Becky Howser, M.D. Becky looks like somebody threw her in a trailer home without her knowledge as if the other Becky made that choice (Sarah Chalke). I think this is indicative of a problem because the character is supposed to be one in the same.
Also, I like how when Lecy returns as Becky we see her wearing the same coat worn by Becky as played by Sarah Chalke. I thought that was a nice touch. For me, not to be offensive, when I first saw the episode, Happy Trailers, I thought oh no this can't be happening. Becky moving into a trailer home. It just wasn't right for Roseanne, the show.
ThomasE 01-04-2010, 02:01 PM Cheescake Head, welcome to the boards and resurrecting this topic. Your opinion well thought out and accurate. And I also like the fact that you agree with me. LOL.
cheesecakehead 01-05-2010, 05:19 AM Thank you. :-)
I just recently looked into Roseanne forums and found this website.

I agree, Irene - but to an extent. I believe that Lecy's Becky would have moved to the trailer park, she loved Mark and she needed to get by ... and she wanted to be married to him. I also believe that Roseanne wouldn't be happy with Becky saying she wanted to have a baby with Mark, she would accept it - but she wouldn't approve. I believe that all of the choices (to an extent, though) that the second Becky made the first Becky would have made as well.
ShamelessFanGirl 11-21-2011, 01:35 AM If Lecy have remained in the role of Becky there I don't doubt for one second that there is no way that her character would have ended up living in the trailer park. I don't believe that her character would have gotten married to Mark, at least not at that age. Perhaps down the road, after she had graduated from college and gotten a great education they could have gotten married and thought of having a family. The show would have been dramatically different had she stayed on the show, but tragically she didn't and I think the show partly suffered because of it. Not to say that Sarah Chalke is bad, but she just didn't have the delivery in her lines or have the same matter of humor that Lecy Goranson did and it made you miss her because of it. At least it did for me...

Well said. I can buy that. To me, Becky 1 would not have moved in the trailer. If she did, it would have been extreme reluctance. Becky 2 was all too happy to do so.
