I thought she was cute wearing pigtails, but wore them for too long. I also thought she looked pretty on those few occasions when she let her hair down when she was younger.

And, I also thought she looked pretty when she had her hair in a 'bun', when she grew up and started teaching.

Overall, I thought she was prettier in the later episodes, but I liked the early episode stories better... having Melissa Sue Anderson around certainly didn't hurt, either.

I agree with you about Laura, Tweety. The young girls in those days typically wore braids, but I found it interesting/odd that Mary never did.

In one episode Mary did wear a braid. The episode when Charles had to find a home for the orphaned children who ended up being adopted by Mr. Edwards and his wife. In the beginning of that episode, the girls see a man dump a potato sack in a pond. The sack has puppies in them and the girls jump in to find the sack. Mary is wearing a braid in this scene.

I think Laura looked so pretty, as a little girl. Mary was really good-looking, too.

The episode was called "Remember Me", a two parter, which aired in season 2.



Mary and Laura were racing to the pond to go swimming, which is why Mary's hair was braided. That's when they came across the guy who was trying to drown his puppies (Warning: SPOILER!!!!! Mary and Laura wait for the guy to drive off and then they rescue the pups).

When she got older,she looked very nice with her hair up just like her mom.

Nice pics Tweety. Yep, I knew in that episode she wore her hair different. I thought it was one braid, but it was in fact TWO.

As for Laura wearing the pigtails, I believe she wore her hair that way simply because she was a tomboy and didn't want to bother with her hair. Although it could be said that it was the era in which she lived in, that is the reason for the braids, but if that is the case, than Mary should have also worn her hair in similar fashion or at least in a braided bun. So, I think to emphasize the fact that Laura was a tomboy was the reason for her hair being in braids. Remember that episode when she had a crush on that boy in class and to get his attention she wore her hair down (the episode where she put apples down her dress). Also, when she was flirting with Almanzo, she did the same thing, she wore her hair down and emphasized that it is hard to play with "such long hair".

Thanks for proving me wrong. I couldn't remember Mary in braids, but now I see there was one. I love that episode and it was very appropriate for Mary to put her hair in braids. She actually looked good. I like when the girls had messed up hair, just like us real girls. When I was young, my mom had to use a rake to comb my hair!

These are from the 4th season episdoe "My Ellen" in which Laura and Mary go swimming with their friend Ellen, Carrie discovers two boys trying to get a peek at the girls (who are swimming with no clothing on), which makes the girls hide by ducking their heads under water. Ellen never comes up and a search of the pond that night confirms the fact that she drowned.

Ellen's mother then tricks Laura into going down to their root celler, and she traps Laura there, insisting that Laura is her daughter Ellen. Ellen's mother then proceeds to "unbraid" Laura, since Ellen didn't wear braids:

I liked the bun she wore in later years. When season 5 started, she looked too old and awkward for pigtails.
