View Full Version : Florida really aged during the show
frani 11-11-2006, 09:43 PM When she was married to James, she always had a sexuality about her. And even though Esther Rolle was a lot older than James, you could see them together. But somehow, when she came back in season six or even when she was with Carl, she seemed older.
Does anyone else see what i mean?

I don't think she aged that much
frani 11-12-2006, 12:27 PM I didn't mean so much the way she looked, but more the way she was meant to be perceived. When she was with James, she seemed younger, almost James age, but when she was with Carl, who was clearly older than James, she seemed like she was his age.
She just seemed more like a young woman with James and then as the show went on, she seemed more mature.
Ireneparalegal 11-12-2006, 09:24 PM If anything, I feel she grew more attractive. Not aged at all.
frani 11-13-2006, 08:44 AM Who said that I meant "aged" was a bad thing? I just thought that she seemed more mature and had a different bearing about her.
mstewart 11-13-2006, 10:48 AM I thought Esther became better looking as the show progressed. She did look more mature especially after James' death by growing her hair out and wearing better looking clothes. In the season that James' died Esther did not look happy and I believe it was stress that was going on backstage with the direction of the show that drove her away during season 5.
No matter how Esther look but one cannot take away that she was a classy lady and an excellent actress.
If anyone who aged in their series was Isabel Sanford. It was beginning to show at the end that she was significantly older than Sherman Hemsley. Roxie Roker became better looking as the seasons went on the Jeffersons.

Who are you directing your question to?
I don't think she aged. To reach maturity is what Thelma did. She went from a kid to a beautiful young woman who married. Michael reached maturity by not constantly referring to "black this" and "black that"...he left that militant midget thing behind. Florida became more graceful. I do know she became better looking as well. Overall, she was more beautiful.

I understand what your saying (I think.) She wasn't her playful fun lovin self that she was when she was with James. She didn't joke around like she did with James. After he died that all stopped, and I think it's because they changed writers on the show, who brought in stern, controlling Carl who was the opposite of James. I think they made Florida more of a push over when Carl came into the picture.
frani 11-13-2006, 10:02 PM Yes, Brieanna, that's kind of what i meant. She seemed more playful. I mean, when she was with James, she seemed liked she could have been in her late thirties, but then later, she looked more like a woman in her 50's which is what she was. I just thought it was interesting.
that's all i was trying to say. Not that she was old or anything

Which wasn't very long...he came, he got cancer and they left to Arizona.

Yeah but when she was with him she was a push over it seems. Like when they had their first dinner, there's no way Flo would have taken that from James. You just don't talk to a woman like that at the dinner table especially out in public, what kinda sh*t is that. I think Flo lost some of her back bone when she got with Carl, she wasn't her fun happy self.

Yeah she did. It seemed kinda weird hearing Thelma say how "polite" Flo was when there were plenty of times she let people have it in the past. The Flo we all knew would have left Carl at the table and taken a cab home by herself.
hcollinsmith72 11-14-2006, 10:31 PM your right about that

I agree with that for sure.
