Entertainer Gerald Levert has died at his home in Newbury.
His family tells Channel 3 News it appears died in his sleep, possibly of a heart attack. He was 40 years old.

Gerald was the son of Eddie Levert, a founder and lead singer of the O'Jays. The family has a street named after them in their native Canton.

Gerald and Eddie collaborated many times, recording an album called Father and Son together. He also sang with his brother Sean and Marc Gordon in the R & B Trio LeVert.

WHOA!!! That is a shock!! I just bought his group's greatest hits a couple of weeks ago. Dr. Jazz and I were talking about the need for a Gerald Levert compilation, and now unfortunately under these circumstances there might be one.

Rest in peace, GL.

R&B Star Gerald Levert Dies Of Heart Attack

November 10, 2006
Gail Mitchell, L.A.

Popular R&B singer Gerald Levert died today (Nov. 10) of a heart attack in his hometown of Cleveland. The artist turned 40 years old in July. The son of O'Jays lead singer Eddie Levert, Levert emerged from his father's shadow to become a well-regarded singer/songwriter and producer in his own right.

Some 20 years after notching his first R&B hit with "(Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind," Levert's warm, sensual voice remained a concert draw, especially among female fans who rushed the stage to grab -- and sometimes wrestle over -- the teddy bears he would toss into the audience.

The artist came to national attention as a member of Atlantic Records' Levert, comprised of his brother Sean and friend Marc Gordon. The trio scored with the aforementioned "Pop" in 1986. Next came the No. 1 R&B/No. 5 pop hit "Casanova" in 1987, followed by three more R&B chart-toppers, "Addicted to You," "Just Coolin'" featuring Heavy D and "Baby I'm Ready" in 1991.

Also in 1991, Levert launched his solo career with the EastWest album "Private Line," whose title track notched No. 1 on the R&B charts. A second No. 1 R&B single, "Baby Hold on to Me," arrived the following year.

Levert went on to record eight solo albums, the most recent being 2004's "Do I Speak for the World?" "Voices," a compilation of Levert duets with his dad and other artists, was released last year. Levert was also a member of the group LSG, which included Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill.

Beyond singing, Levert's talents included songwriting and producing. His collaborations included projects with Barry White, Stephanie Mills, Teddy Pendergrass and the Winans. He also co-wrote and co-produced Barry White's last No. 1 R&B hit, 1994's "Practice What You Preach."

"He was one of the greatest voices of our time, who sang with unmatched soulfulness and power, as well as a tremendously gifted composer and an accomplished producer," reads a statement from Atlantic. "Above all, he was an exceptional human being whose warmth and grace inspired us all."

That is so sad. He was so young. I loved the O'Jays growing up. Too bad such talent to be taken away so soon. RIP:(

God, I love his appearance in that song by Chris. I never get tired of it. There is that part where Chris says "If a girl got a pierced tongue...she wants to s**k your d**k (and in the background you can hear Gerald singing "That'd be great!!"...if a guy has a pierced tongue...He probably wants to (same thing)...(and this part, Gerald Levert is singing "No, No, don't want that!")

I can't help but hear Gerald singing in the background because he did it so damn good and it just blended well into what Chris was doing. God, this is sad news, he definitely was young.

It's crazy, but I was thinking the same exact thing before hearing about Jack Palance, wondering who the 3rd one would be.

I was shocked to hear about Gerald died. He was a very good singer and i was a fan of the group Levert. I used to have their albums Just Coolin and Fo Real Tho. They're from my hometown Cleveland, Ohio. I met Gerald at a record store in Cleveland a long time ago when he was signing autographs promoting his solo album. I also met his brother Sean at a conveinence store in Cleveland about 4 or 5 years ago and i asked him was he gonna do another Levert album with Gerald and their cousin. He said no. Gerald produced Freddie Jackson's I Just Wanna Rub Up Against You song that came out in 1995 i believe. I love that song. Gerald and Sean sang on Silk's Don't Keep Me Waiting song on Silk's Lose Control album. I love that song too. I also love Keith Sweat, Gerald, Aaron Hall's Funky Dope Loving song on Keith Sweat's Twisted album. Gerald, Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill also had a group called LSG for those who didn't know. They did 2 albums. Their hit songs My Body and Door #1 are on the first LSG album. I like those songs. I also like the remake they did of Midnight Star's Curious song with LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, MC Lyte. Gerald used to produce Cleveland's r&b artists Men At Large and The Rude Boys. Men At Large had the hit songs Let's Talk About It and Holiday. Those songs came out in 1994 i believe. Holiday song i love a lot. The Rude Boys were a one hit wonder and they had the song It's Written All Over Your Face which i believe came out in the late 80's or early 90's. I'm gonna have to check out Gerald's solo albums because i haven't heard any of them. I'm also gonna check out the other Levert albums i haven't heard and i'm gonna check out Gerald and Eddie Levert's collabo album. I remember Gerald and Eddie's song Baby Hold On To Me. That's a nice song.

I just read a newspaper article the other day about Gerald and found out he died of prescription drugs. He took 3 different pills at one time obviously. I wonder why he did that. Maybe he was depressed with life and his career. It seemed like he had a good singing career.
