This is to everyone who said Gimme a Break was better without the Lawrence brothers:

They are the only cast members from Gimme a Break who still have careers and millions of fans. Plus their faces have been plastered on every magazine. Who else from Gimme a Break has had that kind of fame?

Umm.. I don't think anybody ever said that the Lawrence brothers weren't good actors or don't have any talent - many people's point is that the show was just not the same without the chief once he died. No one ever questioned the Lawrence brother's current popularity either..

If I were to take a poll on this site, I would say 70-75% of the visitors would say their favorite seasons are from
seasons 1-4 rather than 5-6. The show did not go steadily downhill because of the Lawrence brothers, it was because of the tragic death of Dolph Sweet..

To Todd

Before this subject gets old quickly, I know Matt didn't join the cast until the last season. But if most viewers prefer seasons 1-4, Joey was a part of those, joining in season 3. I figure the show lost something when Dolph Sweet died. But earlier in the message board, it was made to sounds like the show lost something after the first 2 seasons (when Joey joined) and that the Lawrences weren't a big part of the show (Joey was in 3-1/2 to 4 out of 6 seasons). I felt it was made to sound like Joey let the ratings down. I hope that this was not what someone was saying, that I misunderstood their meaning;
being a big Joey fan myself!

Nell Carter is currently playing Mother Love in that Forgive or Forget talk show. Dolph Sweet died, Howard Morton is dead, I dont know what the others are doing

I found that out from someone else. Nell Carter is NOT Mother Love. In 1/00 she was replaced by Robin Givens as host.

I for one say that the show didn't go downhill till season 5. Joey had nothing to do with it. It was the cheif's death. He was to be a part of season 5, but died after the taping of the finale of season 4. That worked out perfectly because if he had died earlier in the season, the show would have went downhill halfway through.

I think that if the chief had survived Gimme a Break would have been out there and a rememberance like the facts of life. Since a lot of Teenagers today remember re-runs on local stations after shows got cancelled.

To me, I think that the girls left the show because ot wasnt the same anymore. I think if the cheif had stayed they would have too. All the episodes would have been diffrent from season 5 on, and the girls wouldnt have left after the 6th premiere, since the chief always wanted them to be close by. I think that the show would have been a great success if the Cheif never died. The show would have possibly ended in '88 or even 89' after 7 or 8 seasons like a popular show would always end.

I think that if he had lived we would have seen Katie and Samantha get Married on the show and Nell fixing the cheif up with a woman who later becomes his wife. That would have been a great idea for the 5th season, but he died.
