I have it on 2 DVDs. It looks like it has been released on DVD, but in region 2 format. I believe mine are from VHS transfers.

One of my favorite series. Terrific cast and with it taking place in the early south about 1920, you had a real feel for that period of time. It was on as I recall for a month and I felt bad when it ended. Watched it three times over the years. Suprised it didn't get more recognition.

If I remember correctly, Treat Williams played one of the chiefs in later years, but he's uncredited at imdb.com. I seem to recall a scene when he was drunk fighting in a bar, I believe.

I have the uk pal release, but I've never really watched it. I got as a gift, but I'm not a fan of Heston, so it's always just sat on the shelf, maybe I'll have a look at it now.

It's a nice series. Here's someone's summary from imdb:

This series tells the story of a southern town's police chiefs and the serial murderer who confounds them. Will Henry Lee is the first chief, an easy going man who works to establish the position while the murderer begins his havoc. The second is a violent racist who stumbles about his job as the murderer continues his. Tyler Watts is the final chief, an african-american cop who must deal with the virulent racism of his community while he puts together the pieces to finally bring the murderer to justice.
