I know he is not the only one, but he had that charming, scheming, and deceiving way as to how he plays in three shows: Silver Spoons(Derek), The Hogan Family(David), and It's Your Move(Mathew)
There are so many 80s teen stars or musicians that define the 80s era: The Brat Pack, Scott Baio, Ricky Shrodder, River Phoenix, Soleil Moon Frye, The Coreys, Kirk Cameron, Michael J. Fox, Menudo, Duran Duran, Rick Springfield, etc., but there is something about Jason Bateman that I really like.

From his Silver Spoons, he was a scheming and almost deceitful friend of Ricky. Derek Taylor was like the friend you will never trust at all, yet Ricky hung with him. Derek also put Ricky into bizarre situation as always. Remember when Ricky was dressed as a girl? That was funny when he tries to tell Rick how to act like a girl. "Girl stuff. Lipstick, nylon, guys. While you are over there, put a good word about me, huh?".... That was funny. Jason had great comic timing also for a kid his age. He try to pick up girls and glamorizes himself like he was perfect. The typical 80s stucked up kid who comes with ideas and plans that nobody we ever do, except for Ricky.

Like It's Your Move, he was snooty and a cynic little brother of the sister. An 80s Holden Caulfield of his generation. Con artist. Making up these lies and made stories that he could fool almost everyone. He also did criticized the girls' behavior and making such lies up about them, thinking that he was the smartest. It was only when his mother that he got caught with the schemes. I remember watching the episodes and thinking, "Wow, he did all that and went scott free." He was like a little more deceiving than his Derek character and much more of a con artist in this show.

In Valarie/Hogan Family, he was a slacker at school/sports guru, and enjoyed picking up girls for his own pleasure, but as time grew we saw a softer side to his character exterior. He became responsible and no longer had to hassle his brothers anymore. But he did worn preppie sweaters and those Izod shirts. There is something so interesting about the characters he played in three shows. Bateman was like one of those charismatic and scheming preppie guys who did the dirty deed and got scott free away from it without ever getting involve, letting his cynical analysis on other people as his main goal. I know I must bore you, but there was something totally 80s about him. He was like the typical kid who picked up girls because of his rep, only to be discovered as to what he exactly was. He would sometimes go along with it if the girlfriend thought that was nice at whatever he did and he played along with it. He was sort of like the Zack Morris of his day. A precursor to Ferris Bueller's character, even Mathew Broderick is the original and we all know that works.;)

It is just that Bateman is such a damn good kid actor of his day(and today) and three of his characters really do take me back to the 80s quite a bit, remembering the times as to when I use have a Glow Worm and Teddy Ruxbin. It was a like a time machine back in the 80s in a way. Don't if that makes sense, but watching these shows really do take me back to the simple times of the decade.
