In the House Hunting episode, when Florida said that combined the family works 80 hours a week, J.J then says "That's more hours that Johnny Carson works in a whole year"

So after digging around, I found out that in 1979 Johnny Carson threatened to quit the Tonight Show because he was being overworked so the Show was reduced in 1979 from 90 min to 60 min and he was also given more vacation time. Another fun fact from the Researcher-lol

Info from 60 minutes interview with Mike wallace and Johnny carson on DVD

I remember when Johnny Carson was in the entertainment news with that. I liked that his show was 90 minutes. It had more time for more comedy stuff. Being cut down to 60 mins. left no room for all those characters I loved watching him portray.

It seems like anything that came out of the J.J character mouth it something behind it-lol Like that other statement in the "Cleatus" episode-"You must feel like President Ford trying to get in touch with the City of New York"

Well, the writers were trying to use what was in the news to add to their writing. It didn't make sense to have a poor family in the projects without interjecting what was going on in the real world that might play a part in their status. Besides, the writers heard the reaction from the audience whenever a statement was made regarding the government, the president or something related. The only thing is now, when watching it in reruns, if you didn't grow up in that era, you don't know what it is they are referring to.

How many people know who Leon Spinks is? He was referenced at least two times on that show. Or just like the school bus being turned over that Florida mentioned.

When I watched I Love Lucy starting in the 70's, I didn't know many of the things that were referenced. I know them now, but not being from the 50's era, I didn't know and I had to either figure it out, inquire abt it or just research it.

How many people know who Leon Spinks is? He was referenced at least two times on that show. Or just like the school bus being turned over that Florida mentioned.

Leon Spinks was around in the Late 80's so a lot of Viewers should know who he is. I know that anyone who is 41 and younger would not know what J.J was talking about when he made the statement about President Ford and Johnny Carson. We would have to research it

Well, those born in 1980 and after wouldn't know who he is. It's not like he is Muhammad Ali, where many people know who he is regardless of when they were born.

I would say 1987, a age that's much closer to my little brother. Someone in 1980 defintely heard of Leon Spinks

I am saying those born in 1980 wouldn't know abt Leon Spinks if you asked them now.

Without a doubt, a big named person like Ali will be known by millions. I am not talking abt a few people here and there who know or heard of Spinks. There is a difference. My niece who was born in 1978 has never heard of him. She knows of Ali of course. The point is, someone like Ali will be known for generations to come; Spinks, nope.

If a sitcom or drama nowadays mentions 9/11 or Pearl Harbor, everyone will know what that is. If that same show mentions something on a smaller scale, it will not be as widely known to people.

Thank you. You just made my point. Anyone INTO SPORTS would know. What abt your average Joe? Ali crosses all lines. You don't have to be a sports fan or a boxing fan to know who is Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, etc. Someone like Spinks was a well-known person WHILE HE WAS BOXING. He is not well known now.

I remember watching the Spinks -Ali fight on television. My parents rooted for Spinks and I rooted for Ali. I was a big Ali fan.
