This is an english summary of these two books about sitcoms written by Cyrille Rollet :
« TV series became in sixty years one of the major fictional forms of the mass culture. Among the four types which constitute the world of TVseries (soaps, dramas and mini series), the sitcom has a special role. These comic series (Bewitched, Cosby Show, Married... with Children or Friends) enchanted generations of TV viewers. Central pieces of the American normative discourse, these comedies are not as transparent as they seem to be. Creating multiple and sometimes unexpected links with other media, they take part, in their ways, in the building of our imaginary. Through the analysis of a particular sitcom like Growing Pains, I try to follow the breathing of a contemporary fictional form. The first volume, Physiology of an American Sitcom, analyze the discourse produced by the 166 episodes. The second volume, The Cultural Circulation of an American Sitcom, refines the deep significance of the serie by connecting it with the peripheral cultural productions (comics, TV history, radio, movies, tabloids etc.). »
