View Full Version : Question About Avs
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 10-24-2006, 05:23 PM Is it all in my head, or do the quality of the pictures always turn to crap whenever you upload them onto SO? But then again I see people with perfect avs and I'm like...well how come theirs don't screw up when they upload them? I don't know if it's my computer, my lack of PSP skills or SO doing it but it's annoying me. The quality of the picture seems fine before I upload it so I don't know...
Ireneparalegal 10-24-2006, 05:38 PM What do u think of your current avatar? I think it looks great. I am not sure what you think is crap?

Well, I don't know. It looks a lot less clear once I upload it. Thanks though, lol
Ireneparalegal 10-24-2006, 05:45 PM The pic you used, is it pretty big or is it a small pic BEFORE you uploaded it?

I resize the pic to 150X150 before I upload it
Ireneparalegal 10-24-2006, 05:52 PM You know, I never resize my pics.
I leave them as is and let it get "resized" when I choose it as my avatar. Usually the pics I use are not much bigger than what is allowed. If I use one that is small, it will look funny when it gets enlarged.
I checked the sizes of some of the avs that I have used and they are 300x200 or 180x180, some of them anyways, others are larger.

ha all of the pics I use were originally large pictures. I never bother to let it get resized itself because I think that's a recent thing for SO, isn't it?

I am not sure. Since I have been here as a member, I never resized my pics beforehand. I just choose my pic and let it upload. I don't have much luck with resizing and so forth, it's not my thing.

lol I can do it, but I'm not good with keeping the picture clear and everything.
Mr. Television 10-24-2006, 06:19 PM I didn't even know SO could resize your picture. It never used to be able to but I just tried it out on my profile pictures and it works.
Polniaczek033 10-24-2006, 08:15 PM it just be how many bytes or whatever it is. maybe change the file size.

lol what does that mean and how? Sorry I'm computer ******** -_-
AllIWantIsYourClutch 10-24-2006, 08:43 PM It depends on the filetype. .gif tends to look a little speckly and .jpgs look smudged sometimes. .png is my favorite filetype but the size is too big to be used as an avatar here.
Courtnee 10-24-2006, 09:06 PM it works. I just uploaded a blend I made and it resized it for me. Nifty...

What's the filetype for your current av? It doesn't look blurry at all.

mine is gif. It's speckly though. I can see it. I'm neurotic like that.

The same thing happens with me. On PSP, I have a nice clear avatar and when I upload it here, the quality usually decreases a little. I guess it must be the file type.

I guess we learn something new everyday. I had no idea that others were resizing their pics before uploading them. I had never resized the pics, just uploaded it and let it do its work.

Yeah, LOL, I just resize them before I upload them.

lol it's perfect compared to mine. I dunno, I always use jpeg out of habit. I guess I'll start trying different types.

How do you manage that? It gets really picky when I try to do that. I've always had problems where it says it's either, a) larger than 30K in size or larger than 150x150px in width/height without SO resizing it for me automatically. Grrr....

i haven't a clue...LOL
Maybe it's how I save my pics. I notice they are JPEG...whatever that means. I know there are some pics of mine where I did get an error message saying it was too large. When I checked the size, it was definitely TOO LARGE. But the other large pics like I mentioned above (300x whatever) have worked for me. I guess when it gets TOO LARGE, that's where the error message comes in.

Jonathan 10-26-2006, 06:49 PM I do most of mine in PhotoImpression. I like it.
Czas na Zywiec 10-26-2006, 07:07 PM .tiff rules all. It doesn't loose any pixels everytime you open it like a jpeg, so it stays nice and clear forever.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 10-26-2006, 08:26 PM Thanks, next time I'll try gif or tiff

I agree, but TIFF also increases file size. The better the quality, the larger the file size.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 10-28-2006, 10:26 PM Okay Problem...when I save something as gif a thing pops up saying it'll make the pic all discolorated or something and then i click okay and it's wicked messed up. When I save it as tiff and try to upload it here, it says it isn't valid and won't let me
