They showed Walter, but he was covered from head to toe in bandages. Other than his few minutes of fame looking like a mummy, they didn't show him again.

Question: Which actor played Walter? My take is that they just had the bandages and there was no one inside, as if ABC was too cheap to hire a guest star. (I mean, come on, they did have people like Jay Leno after Shirley's wedding!)

The groom under the bandages at Shirley's wedding was just a generic extra/bit player--no one important. IMO, had Cindy Williams stayed with the show, they would have eventually shown "Walter" (possibly after milking the mystery like Norm's wife, Vera, on "Cheers" or like the next door neighbor on Tim Allen's show) and used somebody famous/notable. It could have worked since Walter wasn't supposed to have been a daily presence since he was going to be stationed elsewhere and Shirley would have still been living with Laverne.

Yeah on Home Improvement they showed his face, his name was Earl. not 2 be confused w/My Name Is Earl). It's funny Vera was never there except in Thanksgiving Orphans from season 5 of Cheers (Shelley Long's last season)
