We all know how the early sitcoms had married couples sleep in separate twin beds, and I Love Lucy was no exception. My curiosity was sparked when I noticed that some episodes had the beds apart, and some had the beds together, so I went through the series to try to find out why.
The entire 1st season had the beds together, using a common headboard, with the exception of "Lucy Fakes Illness." I guess they separated the beds for filming purposes so the doctor could examine her. In "The Gossip," Ricky is on the wrong side. (?)
In the 2nd season, only two episodes had the beds together (obviously "The Handcuffs" had to be). Then they separated the beds "In Ricky Loses His Voice" and they got the bookcase headboards. Again Ricky is one the wrong side. Ironically, this is the episode right before Lucy finds out she's pregnant. I guess the sponsors thought it was too much to have Lucy pregnant AND sleeping next to her husband. For some reason they put Ricky on the other side again in "Ricky Has Labor Pains." Then the beds were put together again for two episodes ("Lucy Hires a Maid" and "The Indian Show"). Why?
After the apartment change, and all the way through the 3rd season, the beds were separate. Ricky was put on the wrong side again in "The Fan Magazine Interview."
The 4th season only had one episode that even showed the bedroom, and that was when Fred slept in Lucy's bed in "The Matchmaker."
The 5th season never showed the bedroom. Most of the non-Europe episode scenes were in the living room.
Season 6 only had two episopes with scenes in the bedroom, midway through the season. In Connecticut we only see the bedroom once, in the first episode.
I found it strange that in the earlier years the sponsors/censors allowed the beds to be together, but later they got more strict. The lack of bedroom scenes in seasons 4-6 could have coincided with Lucy and Desi's declining relationship.
