View Full Version : Did Louise had an unusual childhood?

I possibly missed half of the childhood memory lane when Louise visits her old home, but I was wondering what became of her other sister? It seem so odd to know how Louise was raised in that environment. Maybe I missed something about 15 minutes before the episode started.

Louise's older sister did appear in one episode. Louise hadn't seen nor talked to her in years. Louise had ASSUMED she just ran away to be with a boyfriend. What really happened was Louise's sister had become pregnant and being a young black single pregnant girl in that era was very shameful. So the sister left to keep her secret. She ended up giving birth to a son.

Thanks. Man, what season was that when Louise visits her old home? I could have sworn late 70s due to the poor lighting itself.

That was definitely in 1980-81...because if i'm not wrong i believe that was the episode that helped her win her emmy.

Yes, this is from year 7 and is the show that won her the emmy award. Later in that season we get Louise's Father which explains why he wasn't in the picture. Her family sure did keep a lot of secrets from her. Louise's Sister is episode 100 from season 5. As someone said earlier all of Louise's acquaintences only appeared once, including her old boyfriend with the bad eyesight and her uncle who age wise seemed more like he could've been her brother.

I don't remember the episode about her father. What ever happened to him?

Louise saw the picture in the paper of a man she thought he was her dad. She went down to where the man was and asked him some questions about where they used to live. The guy lied and said he never lived in those places.

Later in the show he came over to the apartment to meet Louise. She wasn't there so he explained his story to George. He couldn't find work so he left town and found a job somewhere else. He was supposed to send for them when he got settled but he never did.
After he heard that, George got mad at him and wouldn't let him tell Louise he was her father.

You meant George was the one who saw the news story and went down to the newstand. Louise met her dad but at the last minute he decided to honor George's request and not reveal his identity. In his case it is OK that they never showed him again and supposedly George never told Louise who that guy really was. I would've liked to have seen another episode with Maxine and/or her son. Actually they could've had the son show up in a few episodes when after Mike Evans quit the second time. I wonder why they didn't go that route?

IMO, the stories were played out very differently. Louise never learns that the vendor is her dad. I think it is one of the better Jeffersons episodes of the 80s and quite economical considering that this was during the brief period when Florence wasn't around, they managed to do a good episode with dramatic elements without most of the supporting players (only Bentley in his urban cowboy get up was in this one). This played early in season 8 and is a much much better episode than most of the shows produced for the 8th season.
Also, the plot in Good Times was original for 1975-76 but far too many other sitcoms (Fresh Prince, Happy Days) have had plots where the male character's long lost father shows up out of nowhere and the kid is angry/hurt.

Especially in the cases where the father and son are black it gets a bit stereotypical in some series (Fresh Prince).
There are a lot of ways to go with the basic idea of the long lost parent showing up. Sister Sister did this in one of their last shows with the twins and they also did it with Sherman Hemsley as Tim Reid's absentee dad. One On One played this out for like a whole season with Kelly Perrine's character. I guess sitcoms can't have to take a basic premise that may have been done before and find some new way to present it.

Two more situations come to mind when we talk about fathers who left who return or are found again. On Family Matters, Harriete and Rachel's father returned after leaving when they were three and one. And on Parent' Hood Robert's father came back during the show. That seems to happen alot.
