View Full Version : Shirley was obviously a virgin...was Laverne?

The show always had Shirley being portrayed as a virgin. They never came right out and said it, but it was obvious. Now, Laverne, that is a different story. Watching L&S during it's first run, I always wondered if the writers made Laverne look more like a "tease" or was she NOT a virgin.

There is one episode when Laverne wakes up wearing men's underwear. She fears she has become pregnant. She can't remember the night before so she doesn't know what happened. We later find out she is not pregnant, but it was that episode that made me begin to wonder, IS SHE or ISN'T SHE?

What do you think?

That's a very good question, I've wondered about that myself. I have no clue if she was a virgin or not. If she went to the doctor he could have looked at her and told her she was or not. They should have had Laverne say "I never slept with so and so" at the end instead of having Carmine singing Hallelujah

So true. Something along the lines of "the doctor said there's no way I could be pregnant, because nothing happened!" Carmine singing had me
But I have always wondered whether she is or isn't. I am glad I am not the only one who thought that!

I don't know why, but for some reason this comes to my mind when I mentioned this "pregnancy" episode. Laverne wearing mens underwear and she is wearing them because she was playing strip poker or she won a drinking contest...does this scene seem familiar? or am I crazy?

Going by her character on Happy days, I don;t think she was a virgin. Laverne was portrayed as the LOOSE one and Shirley was portrayed as the GOOD one

Not really. You know when characters are given their own show, the characters change. Even Shirley on Happy Days seemed "loose". They changed that on L&S...so that theory doesn't jive. Shirley was not so innocent as she was portrayed on Happy Days.

I think Laverne was a virgin in the first few seasons. In "Falter At The Alter" from season one, Shirley asks her if she's getting married to Sal because she's in trouble, and she says "Watch your mouth, Shirl - I'm wearin' white!". In the later seasons... I'm not so sure. By the eighth season, I'm pretty sure she's not a virgin.

On Jimmy Kimmel Live, he asked Penny if Laverne did it with Fonzie and she replied "Sure. Not in real life - no. But on the show... yeah. She liked it!" LOL!

See, on Happy Days she made it seem she was "loose"...the first seasons on L&S, she seemed virginal. The fact that Shirley said are you in trouble could be a hint that Shirley knew more abt Laverne than we did. Afterall, they are best friends and roomies.;)

It's funny, on the Intimate Portrait ep with Penny Marshall, she said that the girls had to be toned down when they got their own show since 8:30 was still "family viewing time". SHe then laughed and said only on TV could two sluts somehow become virgins. It was pretty funny. I think that Laverne probably lost it by the time the Cali eps rolled around, but probably not Shirley. Then again, Shirley was doing something to keep Carmine interested all of those years...

Carmine was interested because she WAS A VIRGIN. That is what kept him around. Why they didn't have those two marry is beyond me. Stupid stupid stupid!

Well, there were plans in the works for a CArmine spinoff after L&S went off the air. In "Hair Today" Carmine left for NY to become a professional dancer on Broadway. Both PM and CW wanted to to leave after season 7, but were convinced to stay because of the $ (until CW's pregancy demands became over the top and she was let go) so there wouldn't have been a future for the characters. Unfortunately, the pilot was not picked up by ABC so all of the remaining actors were looking for work after the show's cancelation. It's a pity that they didn't give the show a real send off and the fans some closure. IT could have been handled SO much better...

I think by the time the "60's" rolled around, Laverne wasn't that innocent anymore. I could see her being a virgin while she was in Milwaukee, but once she moved to Cali she was dating married men and living with a man (for one day.) Plus when Shirl moved out, who knows what Laverne was doing home alone with her dates

She got drunk at a party and thought she had done "the deed". What actually happened, she became one of the boys, I think she drank more than anyone else, and ended up wearing a pair of boxers to wear as her "trophy". Hence, the reason she thought she was pregnant.

Thanks...Some of this seems familiar now. I just remebered the episode, but like I said, it`s been years since I've seen it.

And back to the topic, I agree with what a lot of you guys said about Vernie being the big V when the show first started, but lost it somewhere down the line....I mean, how could she NOT? LOL...I heard of a tease, but god.

This line cracked me up from the episode titled, "Once Upon a Rumor" when Lenny and Squiggy spread the rumor that Shirley was a "FUN" date and Squiggy apoligized over Mr. Shotz' intercom.
Mr. Shotz asked, "Is that the same Shirley Feeney?"
Squiggy said, "Yes!"
and Mr. Shotz said, "Attn: Shirley Feeney, Our date for this Tuesday is cancelled......Thank you!

 I love that episode. I love when Laverne tells Shirley that there's a rumor going around that she's a "fun" date, and Shirley innocently responds with something to the effect of, "Well, I *know* I'm fun..."

As for Laverne & virginity... I got the impression in "Look Before You Leap" (the pregnancy 'false alarm' episode) that Laverne HADN'T done the deed before (they don't specifically address the issue... it was just the impression that I got). But yeah, the Troy Donahue episode quote that someone gave seems to indicate that it was lost somewhere along the way...

They certainly changed Shirley as kind of loose on Happy Days to being a tease to Carmine (who was dumb enough to keep coming).

Loved Laverne. Was sexually active, probably. I also remember that episode where she thinks she is pregnant and she is too afraid to tell her father.

You are right. On HD, she was kinda loose, or at least it was implied she was a little wild. On L&S, she was as innocent and pure as the driven snow.

Again regarding Laverne, she had gotten drunk while having a contest drinking beer with guys and was awarded the gift of men's boxers to wear since she was now "one of the guys." She woke up thinking she had sex, but she didn't. She assumed and that is why she thought she was pregnant. But she didn't have sex that night. As to whether she did at any other time is up for grabs.

Going a bit too far now! I agree with the consensus gentium here--- on HAPPY DAYS, they had definately had sex before. On their own show, I think Laverne was all talk actually. I've never seen many Cali episodes, so I can't speak for the later years, but for the first few at least she seems pretty innocent. There's a difference between wanting to date and wanting to get some. She was no Blanche Devereaux! Shirley was definately pure.

I think that when the show began, when it was set in the year 1956, that she definitely WAS a virgin (not so much on Happy Days but whatever LOL), however as time goes on and they go into their 30s and it is the late 60s, that she isn't. One---it would just be weird for a girl in her mid-thirties to be a virgin...even back then. Two---she moves in with a guy in the one episode, and it is kind of implied that she has had sex with him. And three---as someone else said about Look Before You Leap (where Laverne might be pregnant, but isn't)...in that episode, she WAS wearing mens underwear, therefore it is probable that something happened even if she turned up not pregnant and said the thing about being an honorary guy...but I don't know. I don't think a doctor would be able to say if something happened or not with a standard gyno checkup.

Anyway, yeah...I think by the end of the series run, Laverne had already gotten down and dirty. :D
