Small Plane Crashes into Manhattan Apartment Building

(Manhattan) - A small aircraft has crashed into a high-rise building on Manhattan's Upper East Side, leaving several apartments fully engulfed in flames. There's no word yet on deaths or injuries, but it is believed several people are trapped.

An F-B-I spokeswoman says there is no indication of terrorism in the crash of an aircraft into a Manhattan apartment building.

There have been differing reports on whether it was a helicopter or a small plane that struck the building, sending debris raining down and unleashing what witnesses described as a giant fireball.

A Fire Department spokeswoman says the aircraft struck the 20th floor of the building. The building is described as a 50-story condominium tower. It has 183 apartments, many of which sell for more than a (m) million dollars.

This is terrible. I just heard that people are trapped on the higher floors.

NORAD has sent up some figher jets to protect some big U.S. cities, but there's no indication of terrorism. It's not a high-value target BUT it is 10/11, which doesn't help.

I don't know how they can rule out terrorism so fast. I pray it's not, but you never know.

Some idiot at my job made me think it was the empire state building and I almost collaspe because of how he came to me and said-"I just heard a plane crashed into a buliding in New York! And i was like-"OH NO!!!! Please, I can;t take another disaster like 9/11. Glad I went to Cnn.com and found out ti wasn;t an attack

Plane was apparently not in contact with Air Traffic Control(which is a requirement to fly over Manhattan). None of the NYC airports, large or small, report knowing about this plane.

WNBC reports it was a 4-seater Cirus 20. That is not confirmed though.

Possible sight-seeing plane out of Teterboro, NJ.

Two other passengers were on the plane....no word who they were.

So sad. When I heard about it this morning, I didn't know many details. I thought it was another terrorist attack. Thank goodness it isn't, but such a shame for all those who lost their lives. I didn't know the yankee player but RIP! :(

I thought it was 9-11 all over again on a much smaller scale. But it's sad, nonetheless. :(
