Jodie Sweetin may have looked innocent as her perky smile appealed to television viewers across the country.

America loved her when she uttered her famous two-word phrase, “how rude.”

But for Sweetin, what seemed like an affectionate life soon turned dark not long after she was out of the limelight.

“I just wanted to be in this middle, numb, zombie state,” Sweetin said.

Sweetin, who starred as Stephanie in “Full House,” spoke to a capacity crowd of 1,600 Thursday night in Warriner Hall’s Plachta Auditorium. She talked about her addiction to both methamphetamine and alcohol.
Sweetin said she started drinking when she was 13, after completing her eight-year stint on the popular TV show. When it ended, she felt like something was missing in her life.

“When I took that first drink it filled something in me,” she said.

As she entered her freshman year of high school, Sweetin said she was scared of being different and she didn’t know who she was.

“I wanted to blend into the wall,” Sweetin said.

Sweetin said her problem worsened once she entered her first collegiate semester at Chapman University.

“You have to work hard to get a .9 GPA,” she said.

Sweetin said she partied Sunday through Thursday, treated her roommate poorly and almost got kicked out of her residence hall.

After entering a blackout state for two days because of alcohol consumption, she decided she needed help.

“Celebrities seem like they are on a pedestal,” said Marne sophomore Christie Lobbezoo. “It’s good to see (Sweetin is) a real person.”

At 18-years-old, Sweetin entered Alcoholics Anonymous and remained sober for the next two years. During that time, she got married to her long-term boyfriend, Shaun Holguin.

But she suffered a relapse four months later.

“It was then that I started hanging out with people that were into speed, meth, crank — whatever you want to call it,” Sweetin said.

One month after she started taking meth, she said she was using it all day, every day.

“I was scared to deal with life,” she said. “The drug took me to an ugly, crappy place.”

Holguin, a police officer, was unaware of her meth addiction until she ended up in a hospital after passing out for two hours on a sidewalk in March 2005. Shortly after her detoxification process, Sweetin said she entered a rehab clinic in Malibu, Calif. Since then, she said she has remained sober.

Before ending her lecture, much to the appreciation of the crowd, Sweetin mimicked her famous catch phrase — “how rude” — one more time.

She also assured the audience she still had Mr. Bear sitting on her bed at home.

I'm so glad she's better now. She's probably one of my favorite actresses. It's great to hear how she persevered through all of it.

I hope Jodie can make a clean start. It's such a shame when anybody gets on drugs.

Sad story. I'm glad it had a happy ending, so far. She's going to have to be on guard for the rest of her life.

I thought the Olsen twins were the only ones with drug problems. Let's hope Jodie is on her way to recovery.

Wow... didn't even know about the alcohol and meth problems. Last I heard she was in college, married, and wanted to be a teacher for kids who are actors.

Glad to hear she's turning it around though.

Even if one of the actors doesn't want to, I'd like to see a reunion type thing for when the last season comes out on DVD.

I had know idea that her life was like that. I always picture her being like Stephanie on the show.
