View Full Version : I'm looking for Gomer Pyle, USMC complete set
janeydoll 10-10-2006, 05:39 PM I am looking for Gomer Pyle, USMC complete series on DVD for my dad for a Christmas present. I need to get it soon, so I can work on some dvd cases.
I have a short trade list right now, so if someone has Gomer Pyle just contact me & I can give you my trade list.
This would be my first trade, but I will be very easy to work with. I will send first if that is required since this would be my first trade.
I would want the spin off episode from the andy griffith show too that is the pilot of Gomer pyle.
thanks
y2k3Joker 10-10-2006, 05:53 PM Let me know if you find a good set.
Stay away from the 10 disc set that's floating around.
Lamont 10-10-2006, 05:57 PM the ONLY set out there is the 10 disc set
SOME PEOPLE took that set and turned it into 20 BUT ITS SAME material
that set is a low 7 of 10
some call is a 6.5 some a 7.5
but its all thats out there
its like 2nd gen vhs tape, its not awful, has full menus and is watchable and if u like gomer u can enjoy it
BUTTTT its a long way from primo quality
STILL its all there is
SEASON 1 comes out around christmas though
janeydoll 10-10-2006, 05:58 PM ok thanks, I will let you know if I find a set.
I am also looking for the complete series of the andy griffith show & the movie "the ghost & mrs. muir" for Christmas presents.
lordsmurf 10-11-2006, 05:15 AM The video on that Gomer set is 352x240 butchered-up blocky video with a ton of noise in the audio. The B&W episodes have color noise, and there are even a number of tracking errors. The audio alone is enough to make you throw the disc in the trash.
But, never fear!
Gomer Pyle, USMC is set for a Season 1 release this December!
Much like the Andy Griffith Show, more season are likely to follow!
Lamont 10-11-2006, 07:09 AM it all depends on how much you like gomer
i have that set too
and i actually watched about 40 eps over the last 6 months myself
the sound issues are not that bad and i can adjust my son volume to where they are not picked up that much
i like the show a lot, so i was happy to find it at all
janeydoll 10-11-2006, 10:54 AM they are for a Christmas present for my dad, is the audio really muffled? I am not familiar with all the terms like color noise, or the 352x240, is that like LP quality not SP?
would you get it for a Christmas present for someone, it is one of his favorite shows that he used to get up at 5am just to watch it, but if it's really horrible quality then I may just have to wait for season 1 retail.
thanks for the information, if you ever find someone else that has it, please let me know.
by the way, how many episodes (for 30 min & hour shows) should be on a disc that still give nice quality?
thanks
Lamont 10-11-2006, 11:27 AM the # of discs is not as important as the source material
ive seen sets with 6 hours on them that are a solid 8.5
and some that have 1 hour that are awful
all depends on the quality of the source and how the set was made
janeydoll 10-11-2006, 11:49 AM ok, so if I have a 30 min show (which is really 22 mins edited) that was recorded on SP that looked perfect how many episodes could i put on a disc without losing quality? right now just from my dvd recorder it fits 5 episodes.
omg65 10-11-2006, 02:22 PM I received a 9(not 10) disc set from Joey1727 a few months ago and although not perfect (7 out of 10 I would say)I absolutely love this set as I am a huge Gomer fan.I have not noticed any sound issues with it.Sound is fine. It's watchable and I was delighted to receive the set.
lordsmurf 10-12-2006, 01:06 AM Anybody who thinks the homemade Gomer sets look good, or wants to know how good the Gomer sets look, should see this: http://www.crapvideo.com/videos/gomer.htm
That's a site dedicated to showing people what NOT to do when making DVDs or just working with video in general.
Lamont 10-12-2006, 07:14 AM lordsmurf
i respectfully disagree
the set is not that bad
its weak yes, made from 2nd gen tapes yes
but not awful
id call it fair but highly watchable
if you want to see an AWFUL set, i think i still have some of the diffrent strokes discs i got from loudon tn lying around:wave:
lordsmurf 10-12-2006, 07:22 AM I'll agree that video can be far worse. But comparing Gomer to something worse is like comparing cow pies to horse dung. I don't really see the point in talking about which bad video looks better.
It all falls in the "bad" category.
janeydoll 10-12-2006, 02:51 PM omg65, does your set have that horrible hiss sound through the episodes like in the clip from this link?
http://www.crapvideo.com/videos/gomer.htm
the audio is where I would have the problem, the video I could tolorate just not that hiss.
so if you could tell me if your set looks just like that clip? and if not, then could you tell me what is different good or bad?
lordsmurf 10-13-2006, 06:20 AM Oh yeah, don't miss the "beautiful" menus either. While the set has been re-authored and menus vary, it's the same set. Check out the 3rd menu here: http://www.crapvideo.com/menus/menus.htm
BARF!
janeydoll, that was one of the more aggravating audio clips in the set, but they all had some level of whine and hiss. And then the video on that clip was better than average. The video would have tracking errors, shakes and other issues from time to time. It's a hell of a lot older than 2nd generation VHS tapes, and it was abused from tape to tape, and then raped one last time when committed to DVD.
It was graded, no shocker here, as 7-9/10 quality. As you can hear and see, it's crap.
Again, BARF!
KonfusionFTC 10-13-2006, 07:02 AM can you show me good menus? would like to see your menus.
Lamont 10-13-2006, 07:13 AM menus--- some people obsess over everything
to be honest as long as the menu is usable and makes watching the shows easier
i dont care what it looks like
some of the ones on that link are fine with me and look fine to lamont
i think its being overly nitpicky
fan made sets are not gonna be perfect and some people seem to expect them to be --- or they call them junk
KonfusionFTC 10-13-2006, 07:25 AM is your site digitalfaq.com???
y2k3Joker 10-13-2006, 08:34 AM Oh yeah, don't miss the "beautiful" menus either. While the set has been re-authored and menus vary, it's the same set. Check out the 3rd menu here: http://www.crapvideo.com/menus/menus.htm
BARF!
Phew !!!
None of my menus made the suck list :p

You need to sign up for one of the Prof's classes next semester. He's a tough s.o.b but you do learn a lot.
Lamont 10-13-2006, 08:40 AM ha ha ha
i just meant--- if the menus are bland, who cares??
i have NEVER just popped in a disc and watched the menu for 2 hours
so i fail to see what big deal is
of course, gomer is not the best set--- but ive seen far worse and its better than nothing
lordsmurf 10-13-2006, 09:09 AM Ah, but you see Lamont, it's not just an issue of bland menus. A bland menu could easily be an excellent menu, it simply needs to be useful and legible. Some of the menus people vomit onto DVDs these days may as well not even exist. It would almost be better to have no menu at all, with a chapter stop taking you to the next episode, as opposed to the useless eye-strain mess some people make. The purpose of a menu is to give you easy access to the content on the disc. But for that to happen, you need to be able to easily read it, and it needs to be organized. Some people simply cannot comprehend that. It's not supposed to be reminiscient of a Van Gogh or Salvador Dali painting.
If you would like to see some of my menus, if you'd like to get feedback/assistance on your menus, or if you'd like to learn some tips on making menus, contact me in PM, and I'll get back to you as time allows.
And yes, Joker, you do pretty good. If I were teaching a class, you'd get at least a B grade on most everything I've seen to date. While advanced creativity is not there, you have an excellent command over layout, font selection, and colors. Your menus are created with technical design correctness, and that can be hard for some to grasp.
"It's good enough" is a bit of a cop out to me. And while fan-made sets may not be 100% perfect (heck, even studios screw that one up), it can still look quite nice. The only thing separating you from a pro is patience and skill. Both can be learned, if you try.
Whoever made Gomer didn't try. It simply looks bad all around.
Lamont 10-13-2006, 09:37 AM well since i KNOW the guy who did the gomer set, i can say this-- he did try, but the source material was weak and u can only do so much,
some of the sets on the link u sent--- i have those sets--- like the GOMER or DUKES or LAUREL AND HARDY set and in my opinion, those menus are fine--- i can read them easilly and use them with ease----
i wont go back and forth on this forever, but i will say this
i have the same sets, my eyes are pretty bad--- if old uncle lamont can see them ok, i cant believe the average guy cant
omg65 10-13-2006, 09:47 AM I gotta agree with Lamont here.I personally have no problem with the menu's on this set.I find them pretty easy to see and navigate.Quite honestly I did not notice any audio problems on the set I have.To be honest I do not have surround sound set up anywhere in my house so maybe that's where the audio issue would be a problem?Yeah the video quality isn't that great but they are still watchable and enjoyable. In a way it's nice to have an entire collection on 9 discs and where the video/audio quality is still better than most of the Amos & Andy stuff out there  .Of course it's all moot as Gomer Season 1 will FINALLY be out on Dec 12th.
One thing I will say about this set is if I were one of the people that paid 100 plus dollars for this on Ebay I would not be happy.Since it cost me far far less I'm happy with it.
