I would def. have to say "Mary's Insomnia." It deals with a very serious thing (addiction to sleeping pills), yet that bathtub scene is a riot! Also "Will Mary Richards Go to Jail?" which is one of my faves of S5. Another example of the show taking an "issue" (In this case, freedom of the press) and making a funny show out of it.

I could go on, but I know Erin has a few more in mind, so I'll stop there. ;)

Well, I know I'm really stretching the meaning of searious here, but one of my all-time faves is "Chuckles Bites the Dust." You can't get much more serious than death. ;)

Oh, and one I just thought of now, "The Last Show." Def. a Kleenex moment there! And I'll throw in "Lou Dates Mary," which I always think is one of the most touching ones. OK, I'm done now, hehe.

I was just reading and found another, "Edie Gets Married".

How about "Support Your Local Mother"? Although, it seems that most of the episodes from the first season weren't all that funny, but I'm not really sure that means they were meant to be serious.

"Edie Gets Married" is a good choice; that's always been one of my favorite episodes.

I recently watched the episode where Ted's dad comes back and thought it was well done, but for me, the comedy aspects outweighed the serious tones; when Ted just can't believe that his father aged rather poorly(although, I don't think the actor who played him was all that rough).

I don't know the name of the episode, but Mary Frann is the guest star. Her character and Mary become friends, and Mary tries to include Rhoda in their activities. Turns out this woman is anti-Semitic. That was a good episode, and pretty daring for MTM.
