I like Denise better. Actually I started out liking them both equally, but when I watched the early episodes, I was surprised to see Marcy eavesdropping so much; this lowered my opinion of her.

A similar thing happened to me with Pete. I didn't remember him talking so much about his divorce/ex-wife in the early episodes!

Why did Caroline McWilliams leave the show anyway??

Why did Caroline McWilliams leave the show anyway??

She was getting ready to marry Michael Keaton. I'm guessing they wouldn't be living in the L.A. area were "Benson" was filmed, otherwise I see no reason why she couldn't have stayed on the show.

Yeah, I have heard that she no longer wanted to do television.

I'm still amazed they replaced a character as great as Marcy and did it so well with the character of Denise. I never thought I could watch the show without Marcy, but Denise made such a nice fit with the rest of the cast, I immediately took to her.

So, if I had to choose between the two of them, I'd give a slight nod to Denise.

Watching the first season shows, I can really relate to Marcy - a sweet and fun young lady looking for the man of her dreams. Caroline McWilliams brought a lot of sunshine and heart to the role. The episode where she learns her new boyfriend is already married just broke my heart (I've been in a similar situation). Plus, she is a secretary and I am an administrative assistant - even our work lives are similar! :D

Benson has been my favorite show since it's first airing. I like both Denise and Marcy but I think the Marcy character had more dynamics. You could see the innocence, the fun loving, the toughness and we learned she was date hungry, and an ecologist, a great step mother and could be sexy, silly, serious and smart. Denise's character had very few traits. I also believe the first two seasons were without a doubt the best, although I love them all.

^Pretty much sums it up for me. The first two seasons are musts for me; after Marcy departs early in the third season, it's not as essential for me- not that I don't enjoy later shows, but I just like the feel of the Marcy era more.
