View Full Version : Your List of the Top Ten Best 1960s Sitcoms

This is a list mixed with shows I like, and want on the list, and then shows that I may not like as much, but were obviously big in the 1960s.

10. "Mister Ed" - A horse who can talk, but only talks to one man, his owner, Wilbur Post has become a classic sitcom. Mister Ed can do so much more than talk, however. Remember when he was surfing? And the time he started a one-horse band? Mister Ed was a horse of many talents, including being a TV star.

9. "Gilligan's Island" - While the critics hated this show, audiences loved it, making it's three seasons rerunable ever since it's final telecast in 1967. Bob Denver and Alan Hale, Jr. will go down in history as one of the great comic duos as Gilligan and Skipper.

8. "The Lucy Show" - While it's not the famed 1950s sitcom "I Love Lucy," this other Lucille Ball sitcom is just as funny and features a single Lucy, who has to raise her kids with the help of Viv (played by former Ethel Mertz, Vivian Vance). Gale Gordon even teams up with Lucy as her angry boss, Mr. Moony.

7. "Car 54, Where Are You?" - Though only two seasons were produced of this police station sitcom, it's clear (to me at least) that it's a classic. Not for just being funny and having a very talented cast, including Joe E. Ross, Nipsey Russell and Charolette Rae. But for bringing together two talents, Fred Gywnne and Al Lewis, who would reteam a couple years later for "The Munsters." On Car 54, however, Gywnne was paired with Ross.

6. "F Troop" - Another two season sitcom, this show deserved many more. Set in post Civil War time, this sitcom starring Forrest Tucker, Larry Storch and Ken Berry is very funny. Though it hasn't been rerun for a while, the season one DVD keeps the show alive. Here's hoping season two is released and the entire series will be available.

5. "The Munsters" - Of the two, two season sitcoms already mentioned, "The Munsters" is by far the most popular, not being out of syndication since the 1960s. The family of creepy-looking Munsters, were actually a very sweet crew and had no idea the would looked at them as freaks. This is one of the most popular sitcoms to come out of the 1960s.

4. "My Three Sons" - This is one of the long running sitcoms. Having twelve seasons, "My Three Sons" is a warm, funny sitcom about a widower (Stephen Douglas) raising his three sons (Mike, Robbie & Chip) along with the help of his crusty father-in-law (Bub). Changes were made as Bub moved away and was replaced by his brother (Uncle Charley), Mike got married and moved out. Stephen adopted Chip's best friend (Ernie). The Douglas's moved to California, where each of the men (minus Ernie) were eventually married.

3. "Bewitched" - Can a beautiful witch marry a mear mortal? That's what this sitcom set out to answer. And Yes is the answer. Samantha married Darrin Stephens and the two began their wonderful life together. However, Darrin insisted that she not use her witchcraft for anything. That idea didn't please Samantha's mother, Endora, who hated Darrin. This sitcom contains one of the all-time famous cast changes as Dick York gets replaced by Dick Sargent in the sixth season out of eight.

2. "The Dick Van Dyke Show" - This show stood out in the sixties because it was fairly normal. It didn't involve a talking horse, a martian living with a human, a witch married to a mortal, a family of monsters, or Hillbillies living in Beverly Hills. It was a simple show about Rob Petrie, a head write for a variety show. The sitcom focused on his home life, with wife Laura and son Ritchie as well as his work life with Sally, Buddy and Mel.

1. "The Andy Griffith Show" - This is one of the most beloved sitcoms of all-time. The show about the town of Mayberry and it's beloved Sheriff is timeless. Deputy Barney Fife is one of the best loved sitcom characters and his departure took it's toll on the series, which was still able to run for three more seasons. This sitcom brought such characters as Gomer Pyle, Otis Campbell, Floyd Lawson, Opie Taylor, Ernest T. Bass and many others.

Honorable Mention: The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres and The Many Loves Dobie Gillis. If only I made a top 13 list.

I totally agree with you. And that's the fun of making a top ten list, because you really have to pick and choose. Once I had my ten, I kept wanting to tinker it, but I didn't want to take any of the shows out of my list. So I gave the rest honorable mention. lol

Or, better still, we could list about a dozen shows that are "tied for 10th place"

Well, I DID put Mr. Terrific at #1.:)

And, yes, I do think that TDVDS is one of the best shows ever. But I've been thinking about it, and I think I should keep Gilligan at the bottom while adding a few others like:

The Double Life of Henry Phyfe
My Favorite Martian
Mr. Ed.
