I finally watched it last night. I liked it a lot. I will definately be watcing every week. I noticed that there's 2 former OC Cast members on there, so that made me happy....Also, I've seen the Univision version and the pilot stayed pretty true to it. There are some slight differences. Betty is a lot uglier in the Univision version. She has a moustache, crazy eyebrows, bad skin, and really bad hair. It's hard to see the physical beauty aspect in that character even though the actress is actually pretty in real life. I liked it better than the Univision version. That one is way more campy than this one. This one was just campy enough. And if they stay true to it, don't expect the campiness to go away any time soon. That's an integral part of the show I think.....Anyway, I can see it as being ABC's new hit. Now if only they changed the night it's on. Thursday nights are soo busy for me.

Did anyone else watch?

I did. I liked it.

The original version as are most spanish language soaps (telenovelas) are somewhat campy, overdramatic, etc. As a matter of fact, the dramatic acting on telenovelas are more dramatic and acted in a way that is more intense than the american soaps.

Watching Ugly Betty means having to forego watching SURVIVOR, which I don't mind because frankly, Survivor this season is rather blah for me. It seems like some people are acting...there is a contestant who appeared in Playboy programming (some reality show), etc. I think they are going overboard with the "acting" potential of these so-called contestants. I want my OLD Survivor back!

I agree. Jeff said the main reason for the whole race thing was to spice things up/ change things, because it's been the same thing every year....Uuuuh well, sorry there Jeff, it's still stale.

I am so excited to see a thread about this show! I actually didn't watch the premiere bc I had forgotten to put it on my Tivo before I went out of town, but I am going to watch it today at some point on the ABC video player!! Thank goodness that they have this now...makes it so much easier to catch up on shows that you miss by mistake!

I thought the pilot episode was charming. I'll definitely be tuning in again this week. Does ABC plan to continue re-airing the Thursday nite episodes on Friday nite?

I've been a huge fan of Vanessa Williams for nearly 20 years; I notice that her biography on ABC's web site makes no mention of her being a former Miss America (she did have her title revoked during her year as Miss America but it was such a major accomplishment, it's sort of hard to believe this detail would be omitted. It is likely only old farts like me remember anything about the controversy). Anyway...hers is the character on Ugly Betty that I'd like to get to know more about; the scene at the end of the pilot makes it seem she's going to be a focal point of what appears to be an evolving mystery. You can tell old Vanessa's having a lot of fun with this role.

I do wonder how they'll keep the show fresh though. As wonderful as the pilot was, Ugly Betty could become a one-joke show quickly. After all, Betty can't become too successful or glamorous or we'll no longer sympathize with her and her struggles at Mode...but at the same time, we'll all get frustrated if she continues coming up with wonderful ideas that her ass of a boss gets all the credit for. Maybe Wilhemena (Vanessa Williams) and her can become conniving buddies; that would be awesome.

I just watched tonight's episode. This show is just so unbelievably awesome I cannot describe it. I haven't laughed so much in one hour perhaps ever. There was so much funny stuff... the bunny(which I laughed hysterically outloud when Betty asked who thought it was funny), the fight between Betty's sister and Gina, and so much more. This episode was perfect and better than the pilot. I believe it's now in my Top 3 favorite shows and defintely my favorite new show of the season!

How the heck did you miss it when it was the one show you were so looking forward to seeing?

Ugly Betty (the pilot episode) was shown at least three times, i believe, on ABC Family. So, I am sure they will rerun the second episode again.

The 2nd episode was hilarious. The catfight was awesome (it's a guy thing i guess, but i like to see two women fight!). In just two short weeks, "Ugly Betty" has moved into the #3 slot on my favorites list, behind "Desperate Housewives" and "Deal or No Deal." The Betty character expressed my sentiments about the fashion world perfectly: "What's wrong with showing her as she really is?"

I love Ugly Betty!!! It is one of the most adorable shows ever on television! You just want to root for Betty and her hapless boss (who is slowly but surely learning how to be a magazine editor, thanks to Betty) and wish malice upon all the nasties on the show! I wish the show continued success, as it really is great! :) When I was in Mexico recently, they are now showing a continuation of the Betty La Fea franchise (which UB is based upon) called La Fea Mas Bella, which of course is a huge hit there!

“UGLY BETTY” PICKED UP FOR A FULL SEASON

The most-watched new TV show of the 2006-07 season, “Ugly Betty” was picked up for a full season order, Stephen McPherson, president of ABC Entertainment announced today. The show, based on the world’s most popular telenovela, “Yo Soy Betty La Fea,” is executive-produced by Salma Hayek and stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez.

“In just two weeks ‘Ugly Betty’ has given us an impressive foothold leading into the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ hour on Thursday night,” said McPherson. “The show has proven to be competitive in a very strong time period, and we’re thrilled with ‘Ugly Betty’s’ performance.”

The ABC freshman has already established itself a solid second to CBS’ time period veteran “Survivor” in the 8 o’clock hour among Total Viewers (15.3 million) and Adults 18-49 (4.7/13), while holding the No. 1 position on average with Adults 18-34 (4.0/12). On average, “Ugly Betty” has improved the time period for ABC by 96% in Total Viewers (15.3 million vs.. 7.8 million) and by 92% in Adults 18-49 (4.8/14 vs.. 2.5/7) over the same nights last year. Additionally “Ugly Betty” qualifies as the No. 1 new series this season in Total Viewers (1.13 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.2/9) among Hispanic viewers watching English language TV.

About “Ugly Betty”:

In the superficial world of high fashion, image is everything. Styles come and go, and the only constants are the superthin beauties who wear them. How can an ordinary girl – a slightly plump plain-Jane from Queens – possibly fit in?

If you took a moment to get to know Betty Suarez, you’d see how sweet, intelligent and hard-working she is. But few people do, because in the world of high fashion Betty is the oversized peg in the petite round hole. When publishing mogul Bradford Meade hands the reigns of Mode, the bible of the fashion industry, over to this son, Daniel, he specifically hires Betty as his son’s new assistant – mostly because she’s the only woman in NYC Daniel won’t sleep with. Though this “player” is reluctant to accept her at first, Betty’s indomitable spirit and bright ideas will eventually win him over. Neither of them really knows the ins and outs of the fashion world, but the two are a formidable team against those who will do anything to see them fall.

And they really are swimming with the sharks. Diva fashionista Wilhelmina Slater is incensed that Bradford Meade passed her over and promoted Daniel to the coveted job after the mysterious death (or was it?) of Mode’s legendary editress, Fey Sommers. Wilhelmina, along with toadying assistant Marc and scheming receptionist Amanda, are out to sabotage Daniel and Betty any chance they get. Betty finds a friend in warm-hearted Christina, who works as the magazine’s in-house seamstress and seems to know everything about everybody who works there.

Away from work, Betty’s home life is far from glamorous. Dad Ignacio and her sister, Hilda, worry that she’s just setting herself up for a fall, while nephew Justin encourages his aunt to dream big (even if he’s aghast at her fashion sense). Nerdy boyfriend Walter, who unceremoniously dumped Betty, keeps turning up despite her attempts to get him to stay away.

“Ugly Betty” stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, Eric Mabius as Daniel Meade, Alan Dale as Bradford Meade, Tony Plana as Ignacio, Ana Ortiz as Hilda, Ashley Jensen as Christina, Becki Newton as Amanda, Mark Indelicato as Justin and Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater. Recurring guest stars are Michael Urie as Marc and Kevin Sussman as Walter.

Based on “Yo Soy Betty La Fea,” the groundbreaking Colombian telenovela that became an international phenomenon, “Ugly Betty” is from Touchstone Television. Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Salma Hayek is executive producer, along with Silvio Horta (“Urban Legends”), Ben Silverman, (“The Office”), Jose Tamez (“The Maldonado Miracle”), James Parriott (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and James Hayman (“Joan of Arcadia”).

“Ugly Betty” is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format, with 5.1-channel surround sound and Spanish audio via SAP.

Solomon, since you missed the pilot of Ugly Betty, thought you'd like to know:

Ugly Betty's pilot episode will now air Friday, November 17 at 9pm, replacing Men in Trees. The Men in Trees episode that was scheduled that night was going to be part one of a two-part episode, and now that one will be the first one to air in the new Thursday at 10pm slot starting November 30. So, tomorrow's Trees is the last one until November 30.

Ugly Betty is a smart show. I actually did not get hooked on it until after watching the marathon on ABC FAMILY to catch up. Now I find myself anticipating it on Thursdays, before my fav. show--Greys.

I was kind of skeptical to get into it because ABC keeps cancelling all my favorite shows (DAYBREAK, WHERE ARE YOU?) but now w/the Golden Globes behind them (and 2 wins) it looks like UGLY is the new PRETTY.

I loved America's acceptance speech. And you can tell the audience was touched, too. Felicity Huffman had tears in her eyes.
