I saw this episode for the first time at the end of August, and wow, what can I say, but that one particular scene just before the commercial break really brought a tear to my eye.

Martin was explaining the sentiment of his chair to Frasier-

Alright I'll tell you what chair I want: I want the chair I was sitting in when I watched Neil Armstrong take his first step on the moon; and when the US hockey team beat the Russians in the '80 Olympics. I want the chair I was sitting in the night you called me to tell me I had a grandson. I want the chair I was in all those nights when your mother used to wake me up with a kiss after I'd fallen asleep in front of the television. You know I still fall asleep in it and every once in a while, when I wake up, I still expect your mother to be there ready to lead me off to bed. Oh, never mind, it's only a chair.

What an actor John Mahoney is!

Yeah, I loved that scene, that chair meant the world to him...

That's one of my favorite episodes (mainly for the laughs) but you're right: that is a GREAT scene and I always thought that John Mahoney was an underracted actor in his role as Martin. He is overshadowed by Kelsey and David but he definitely can hold his own as an actor. :)

That was such a wonderful scene! John Mahoney seems to be the best at the sentimental scenes. I just wanted to hug him when I heard him say those lines!

I agree. Even though Martin wasn't supposed to be great at expressing emotions, John Mahoney did an awesome job those times when Martin got sentimental.
