Hawkeye, Hot Lips, Radar and the Gang from the M*A*S*H 4077th Roll into TV Land's Line-Up Beginning in January

NEW YORK, Sept. 27 -- TV Land has secured the exclusive primetime and overnight rights to all 255 episodes of Twentieth Television's M*A*S*H - one of the most successful shows ever seen on television - beginning in January 2007, it was announced today. The series, which aired for eleven years on broadcast television and garnered fourteen Emmy Awards, remains one of the most celebrated shows ever and is widely lauded for its realistic storylines and ability to embrace both comedy and drama into one show.

"M*A*S*H is truly one of the most beloved series in TV history and the perfect fit for TV Land as we continue to superserve our baby boomer audience," states Jaclyn Cohen, Senior Vice President, Programming and Acquisitions, TV Land & Nick at Nite. "M*A*S*H is a natural extension of our programming strategy of presenting hit acquired programming alongside TV Land originals to celebrate programming that is iconic to baby boomers, the first generation to grow up with television."

Steve MacDonald, Twentieth Television's executive vice president, general sales manager, basic cable, added, "We are delighted to enter this agreement with TV Land on M*A*S*H. This program's unparalleled strength and success, along with its ability to build networks, marries well with TV Land's strategy to further grow its brand in TV homes throughout the country."

According to a recent TV Land survey, M*A*S*H is THE #1 favorite show among Adults 40-59 and a Top 5 show among all adults. Additionally, baby boomers selected M*A*S*H as their all-time favorite TV show, followed by CSI, Star Trek (which joins TV Land in November), Law & Order and 24. Also, Alan Alda's Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce character ranks as a top 5 all-time favorite TV character among Adults 18-59.

M*A*S*H will join TV Land's line-up with a special week-long primetime and overnight showcase (8PM - 8AM, all times ET/PT) from January 1 through Sunday, January 7, 2007.

Throughout the week, TV Land will complement classic episodes of M*A*S*H with specials, including the shows' 20th and 30th Anniversary
retrospectives, the original M*A*S*H movie, the shows' landmark series finale and other M*A*S*H themed programming. The M*A*S*H finale remains one of the most successful show installments in television history and - when broadcast in 1983 - was a major programming milestone which attracted over 105 million viewers, the largest TV audience ever.

Based on the 1970 Robert Altman film of the same name, M*A*S*H revolves around life at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, where wounded and sick soldiers are treated. The show centers around Dr. Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce (Alan Alda) and Dr. "Trapper" John McIntyre (Wayne Rogers), two brilliant surgeons often preoccupied with attractive nurses, practical jokes and merry-making, all while disregarding military decorum.

Their relaxed approach is a source of consternation for other medical staff including Dr. Frank Burns (Larry Linville) and Lt. Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan (Loretta Swit), whose secret love affair is no secret. Lt. Colonel Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) is the camp commander who gives "Hawkeye" and "Trapper" free reign, further irritating Burns and "Hot Lips." Lt. Blake is aided by the nervous, yet efficient, Corporal Walter "Radar" O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff). Other show regulars include Corporal Max Klinger (Jamie Farr), a doctor's aide in the operating room who wears women's clothing in the hope of being discharged and Father Francis Mulcahy (William Christopher), who runs an orphanage and serves as the unit's chaplain.

Many cast changes occur throughout the series' run as McIntyre is discharged and is replaced by Dr. "B.J." Hunnicut (Mike Farrell), a clean cut family man. Dr. Burns is also later discharged and replaced with Dr. Charles Emerson Winchester (David Ogden Stiers), a Boston blueblood who
does not get along with Pierce and Hunnicut. The most significant departure from the series comes with the exit of Henry Blake, who is replaced by
Colonel Sherman Potter (Harry Morgan).

Throughout the series, there is a great deal of character development as Houlihan becomes friendlier, Pierce becomes more sensitive and Klinger becomes more assuming of his authority.

TV Land will only have rights to MASH between 8pm-8am. Hallmark will have rights from 8am-8pm. The show is a big ratings success, so it is a good decision, business wise.

It's great that TVLand is acquiring another older show, but IMO, it's really not necessary for a show to air on two cable channels.

mmmhhhmmm. I hear ya.

TVLAND, like a lot of Networks these days are just worried about ratings and the popularity of the shows they aquire, rather than great shows we haven't seen in years- That deserve to be on. They'd rather air the same old stuff, even if it isn't all that good, rather than quality television.

I agree that M*A*S*H is overplayed and it will be even more overplayed come this January. However, it is a quality program. M*A*S*H is a great show, even if it doesn't need to be on so much. I mean with the DVDs out, I have no plans of watching M*A*S*H on ANY channel.

I also agree with you that TV Land needs to show some rare stuff, and that they are worried about ratings. Heck if a show doesn't get blockbuster ratings, on N@N, they shove it to an A.M. slot and replace it with an hour of Roseanne. This is just the current TV world we live in right now.

KTTV aired the popular series after "I Love Lucy" for an hour at 1:00pm weekdays.**

I have been waiting a long time for M*A*S*B To come to TV Land let just say I have been waiting since December 26, 1996 for M*A*S*H To come to TV Land

I wanted TV Land to show M*A*S*H before The Hallmark Channel started showing it. So, it seems to me, like it's too late for TV Land to show it now. Just because of it's over exposure. But a show being overexposed means nothing to the majority of TV watchers. I mean, look at how N@N shoves many hours of Roseanne and Fresh Prince at us. Those extra airings must be doing well or they wouldn't do it. So there are people who will watch the same thing over and over and over again, and help get N@N high ratings for a show that's being overplayed. We at Sitcoms Online are clearly the minority. Because we have fans of Roseanne and Fresh Prince here, but we all agree that they're being shown too much. And as much as I love M*A*S*H, I admit that in January, it will be on WAY too much.

So I don't have a problem with M*A*S*H being on TV Land, I just think they should have done it way before Hallmark Channel had the rights. Of course, then it was being played all day on FX.

The show is a big ratings success, so it is a good decision, business wise. How can it be a good decision, business wise when this show is shown about 1000 times a day.Don't they think that we would be sick and tried of seeing this show?!I mean,it's a good show, but this is one way of making even a classic show like this triedsome. The way I read it,this show will be on nearly 12 hours a day between the HALLMARK showing and the N@N (N@N) T.V.LAND showing. But as usuall, the brainless, gutless powers have to put on something shown a million time rather than something that haven't been on the air in years.

MASH is a ratings success, of course it would be a good business to get it. The show is still on locals even and has never ever been off of them since it entered syndication. It does well on cable, too.

TV Land can't be brainless since their ratings are going up each year. Ratings are what they care about.

Funny how TV Land's ratings are going up each year, when all I notice is how crappier it gets every year. This channel is worthless to me now, and I used to watch it all day long (well all day that I was home). I mean, what kind of idiots have these ratings boxes? They're screwing up television for us!

TV Land is supposed to give us some variety in the TV world. Showing a show that gets rerun to death on Hallmark Channel, and will be complete on DVD, not to mention the local repeats isn't giving is variety. Of course, I guess TV Land never said they were about variety, we just expected more from them.

I love M*A*S*H as I've stated before and this isn't against the show, it's against TV Land showing a show that's already rerun alot.

IMHO, I think everyone should have a ratings box in their house. I wonder how different the whole situation would be then.

I rarely watch TVLand or N@N now myself. At least we have the i channel. It'll seem really good when it's completely transformed.

I am so sick of tvland or nick at nite running hours and hours of say Roseanne. Please don't get me wrong-I love that show but I would like to see a channel that changes shows every half hour or every hour.
That way there would be more variety. Pretty soon there will be just one channel with 5 shows that are the most popular. That is pretty much what is starting to happen now. I would like the chance to miss Mash and then it could come back. I mean, tvland is going to butcher this show with tons of advertisements. I am scratching my head in amazement that anybody still watches this channel. I guess sheep are easily led.

I think its ridiculous that TVLand is adding "M*A*S*H" to their schedule in January 2007. "M*A*S*H" is one of the worst shows in all of television :(. Stupid, very boring, very depressing, very unwatchable, and very dramatic. I mean come on. The show is rerun to death on the Hallmark Channel. If TVLand was looking to add just ONE new show to their schedule in January 2007, they should of added one of these eleven shows that I will list below that are 10 times better than "M*A*S*H" and in need of a TV Home. If you ask me, I would LOVE to see TVLand add all eleven of these shows to their schedule in the future. They are all great shows, very watchable making it fun to watch, and great television classics :), NOT "M*A*S*H". All eleven of these shows listed below are in need of a TV Home and should be on TVLand, NOT "M*A*S*H".

It's funny how TV Land Canada's or Sun TV's ratings skyrocket when they decide to air an old rare TV show.

Why doesn't TV Land in the U.S. consider this option?
