View Full Version : The Newlywed Game
Mrs. Periwinkle 09-19-2006, 12:46 AM Is anybody else here a fan of this show? It is my favorite game show, after my beloved Match Game...I absolutely adore Bob Eubanks--he was a very good, funny, and handsome game show host, I thought. The "whoopee" questions never seem to get old and I love the eccentric contestants they had on the show. The version GSN is airing at the moment is probably my favorite.
howilu 09-21-2006, 10:33 AM I remember the original version of The Newlywed Game. I thought it was tasteless and funny. The show debuted on a day when CBS preempted their hit game show Password for a Vietnam War address by then Secretary of State Robert McNamara, causing game show fans to change the channel. Within several months, The Newlywed Game ended Passowrd's dominance in the 2 PM (EST) timeslot and the show left the air in September 1967. The Newlywed Game continued until December 20, 1974 before heading into syndication.
Bob Eubanks was the perfect host, playing straight man to four couples. The show definitely jumped the shark in the late 80s incarnation when Eubanks was replaced by Paul Rodriguez who was IMHO one of the worst game show hosts of all-time. He was trying to upstage the contestants.
Mrs. Periwinkle 09-21-2006, 08:55 PM It's a shame that all of the early episodes of The Newlywed Game were destroyed. It would be great to see them in re-runs.
I agree, to me, Bob Eubanks was the perfect host for the show and nobody could host TNG but him. In Bob's autobiography, he says that he was hurt that he wasn't asked to host that version in the late 80s...
Scoobiedoo30 09-22-2006, 03:07 PM what do you mean by The early episodes of The Newlywed Game were Destroyed
Mrs. Periwinkle 09-22-2006, 09:40 PM The tapes from the 60s version of The Newlywed Game were destroyed after they were aired because they thought no one would have any use for them later on. A lot of the old game shows no longer exist because the tapes were destroyed.

I read that the ABC shows can't air due to color deterioration
That is what I read
Loved that show too and adore Bob Eubanks as well
He is was and always has been very handsome IMO!
EricIdlefan 09-26-2006, 02:52 PM I thought Bob didn't want to continue
Doing the show in the late 80's as I heard
He was getting sick and tired of doing the show
And wanted to move on to other things.
Mrs. Periwinkle 09-28-2006, 12:25 AM Not according to his autobiography (titled "It's in the Book, Bob!"). It's a very interesting book--I am a die-hard Beatles fan and he managed concerts for them in CA, so that part of the book was also of interest to me.
Bob also hosted a short-lived version of TNG in the late '90s.

There are a number of NG episodes that are early that exist. GSN has aired some of them in the past. They're just not all in good shape. They've aired several episodes, including the 1974 finale.
Mrs. Periwinkle 10-02-2006, 02:30 AM My mistake. :) I know Bob has said something about the early episodes being destroyed, so maybe only a few of them exist. And, I do recall seeing a clip (or perhaps even the whole episode) of that finale...that was a tear-jerker.

Yeah as Bob was crying that he really couldn't take it anymore
Heard he was just boo-hooing!
Bruce R 12-03-2006, 11:08 PM My wife and I were on a 1967 episode of the Newlywed Game and I read where you said that all the early shows were destroyed. Is this true?
friendsfan77 12-04-2006, 06:31 PM Most of them exist, but reports have said that for the earliest episodes there are color deterioration problems.

It's assumed all ABC Newlywed Game episodes exist according to some sources I've read. Also, it was believed that Chuck Barris preserved a vast majority of his shows so that future audiences would be able to see them again. Not knowing the growth of various TV technologies which were years away at the time.
I have found a list called the Game Show Survival List that has nearly every game show mentioned also episode status of those shows.
Game Show Survival List A-M (http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Stage/2776/gslista-m.html).
Game Show Survival List N-Z (http://members.fortunecity.com/gameshowplaza/sln-z.htm).
The lists are fascinating to read.
