I started out buying DVD cases and making covers for the cases and storing them on bookcases, but I started getting a lot of stuff lately and we're planning on moving early next year.

Right now, I just store them on 50 disc spindles, but I put no more than 30 on a spindle.

I heard if you use a 100 disc spindle the bottom discs will warp

I put all my dvds in dvd sleeves that you can find at walmart (memorex brand 100 pack) Then I have this rubbermade thing that is long horizontally which you can buy at walmart also.

Dvd cases and binders tend to scratch discs. This is the best method to store dvds.

I keep mine in the paper sleeves in shoeboxes. They are in my closet next to my computer, not the best place, but not the worst either. On a simliar note has anyone seen these before, I think they sound like a great idea.

I would recommend to anyone that whatever you keep your collection in, it be at least 3-4 feet off the floor.

i do protect myself from

fire, theft, flood, etc

when new discs come into my house, i make a working copy, and i store the originals in a seperate location, about 50 miles away

so if something were to happen to my house, i wouldnt loose much at all

the machines, etc, are all insured for replacement cost, just like everything else in the house

I store mine in individual paper case and put them horizontally in Sterilite Plastic Cases, and I put it in my closet and near my PC. I think it is sold in Walmarts and Big Lots. The dvd's fit perfectly when the cover's on.

Whenever i get any new dvds from trades in, i make a dupe of them and get rid of the originals. I have a specific form that i use in my collection of my homeade dvds, all are in black slim cd cases with label printed on using my thermal printer and all have the same layout on the dvd label. And i had purchased a lot of shelves from wal mart, just regular wood shelves put them on my wall. They are about 6 feet long and i have 10 of them. THan i purchased another, and cut it and screwed it onto the end so the stuff doesn't fall out and i can pack them in. I have 5 of the 10 complete filled, THat's how i store my commerical dvds and my dvd-rs.

We have to do that here in Colorado because of the bears. One thing I HATE is when bears watch my discs. They always end up getting scratched!

hey greg

what out or ill send a photo of my set up

its a lot like the old card catalog system at the library

heavy wire shelving from sams club

and 20 inch boxes hold the discs upright in paper sleeves

every disc in order and dividers between sets

with that much stuff, it would be a night mare if it wasnt organized

over 13000 disc are 10 seconds or less away from my hand

i've actually been building my own bookcase shelves; i fasten them to the walls flush to the ceiling (yes they are off the ground, we sometimes get floods too)

...the disks i mostly just put in paper sleeves and hope that i remembered to label them.

I actually have everything on shelves in DVD cases WITH artwork! Our basement looks like a Blockbuster video:-) My basic rule is I don't watch it, until it's on the shelf. I do like spending time down there just looking through stuff and it's one hell of a conversation piece when company comes over! I think that's probably the best preserved way to store discs. Over time I found paper sleeves seem to get surface scratches, and for goodless sake DO NOT keep discs in those disc binders! At work we noticed some discs stopped playing after a few months so we did an experiment. We looked at a few new discs under a microscope (from my old chemistry set) and they looked fine. But after a few months small cracks in the surface started forming due to the stress on the disc when turning the pages. This also loostens the adhesive used to glue to 2 layers of a disc together. We've switched to binder pages that have cardboard backing which helped, but they still get scratched when removing and putting the discs back.

Anyway something to think about.

Anything that does not touch the disc dye surface is good for DVDs.

Most people are unaware that the bump on the hub keeps discs from touching when on spindles, so those are fine, assuming you're not using flat-hub inkjet discs.

DVD cases, jewels cases, slim cases ... all are fine.

Wallets and other sleeves are okay if there is no disc stress, the materials do not cling to the disc, and they are accessed infrequently (few times per year).

While you might think a disc "has no scratches", even micro-abrasions on the disc surface can be enough to refract light. The issue is more apparent when using less-than-stellar readers and discs. You have to remember that the laser beam in use is only a few nanometers thick.

Be careful if you want them to last a full life! :)

i keep mine in sleeves all filed in order
tons of work to keep it right

some people store in binders, some in spindles, some in cases

i even know one lady who just kept hers ALL PILED UP ALL OVER HER APARTMENT ---- on the floor, on the boxes, a REAL MESS!!!!!!

the point is to keep them where u can find stuff when u need it!

i used to have the whole artwork thing too but that was to much work so then i went the whole drawer route and that was to much to take em around. so now i have 520 discs binders so they are porable. i am just now getting them back from my evil ex wife:mad: and i am now living in salt lake city so hopefully i will be back to small trades in the next 6 months.

I store all mine in slim disc DVD cases and store them in file drawers. I have four file cabinents. Two steel-four drawers high, and two plastic-five drawers high.

Evil ex-wives! Perish the thought, wait a minute I have one of them too!
