Who saw the premiere episode of Family Feud's ninth season? The show unveiled a new set and a new host, John O'Hurley. I thought O'Hurley was a tremendous upgrade over Louie Anderson and Richard Karn. He brings experience from his stint on To Tell the Truth as well as humor and warmth to the two families. The game is still one of the best in TV history since it's a very simple format, there are no right or wrong answers and the moment you tune in, you're playing along.

After watching his first full show, it's so nice to still see that I was WRONG, WRONG, EVER SO WRONG about being skeptical of John O'Hurley's performance. He's off to a great start.

Though Louie's job on Feud IMO was not good for most of his run, I dont know how exactly he did in the beginning. When the series first started, in Indianapolis, WXIN/ch.59 aired the show at 2:05 am, then later they moved it to 9 am. I had no clue that there was a new Feud at the time until there was one night I couldnt sleep. If people thought Karn was bad in his final season, then they might be even more shocked if they checked out his first episode. He seemed really uncomfortable and out of place on that. It's nice to see that O'Hurley did not get off to a bad start. He seemed like he was really having fun from start to finish, as IMO, is how a host should act on a show. Nice to see I was again proven wrong how about a new game show host will work out.

I am so loving this new music package too. This new season is starting off so much better than I was expecting when I first heard about all these new changes. I think John is well on his way to becoming a very respectable host of Feud.

I havent seen his version of Truth since it aired, and I cant really remember how he did. Was he this enjoyable on that show?

John O'Hurley is a really good host. I think he's the best host Family Feud has ever had. I liked him playing Peterman on Seinfeld, but he's even better as host of Family Feud. He's tons better than Richard Dawson and he's better than Richard Karn. I never saw any of the episodes with Louie Anderson.

Family Feud was my favorite game show as a little kid, I've watched ever since the Dawson era. However, everyone in this thread seems to be overlooking Ray Combs' stint as host in the early 90s. I honestly think his episodes were the best and most entertaining. He had potential to be great, if not for the abrupt end of his life. Feud has really become a revolving door of hosts throughout the years...

Dawson - Even as a youngster, I thought he was too egotistical, and a little bit of a lech.

Anderson - Looked out of place. Really had no business doing that particular show.

Karn - Reminds me too much of the Al Borland character. As host, he seemed too nerdy or square.

When I first heard O' Hurley was taking over the helm, I was ready to give him no chance. I liked him on Truth, but didn't think he could work as Feud host. After watching for the first time yesterday, and now reading your comments here, I'll give him a chance.

Still, I think the Ray Combs' era of Feud is the best thing on GSN..that, and Press Your Luck.

I saw the new Feud, I think it's kinda neat the way they now have the set similar to the way it originally was.

The Family Feud Set looks like The 1994 Family Feud when Richard Dawson Returned as Host.

I'm going to disagree with the ones whom thought that Richard Karn didn't do a good job because I thought he did a good enough job;let's say 50000% better than Louie Anderson!I too thought that John O' Hurley was going to stink up the joint, but so far,so good.I'll have to watch a few more to really be sure.I too like the retro set.

I'll pass on Mr. O'Hurley. Richard Karn was good. Louie was horrible, tho I thought it was cool he increased the prize from 10Gs to 20Gs. Dawson was okay.

I thought John O'Hurly was very stiff and did not offer any humor to the role as MC. Not sure why Richard Karns left but miss him in this role. I honestly think O'Hurley will lose the audience..........................he thinks he too cool.

It's nice to see The Feud going back to the basics. Now if they'd only resurrect the original theme music and cues... :D

That's the one disappointment I had. When I first tuned it, it was already about 10 minutes into the show. I saw a set similar to the old one & thought, wow, maybe they'll have the old music & cues as well! No such luck. :(

From what I heard, they just wanted to go into a new direction;code for Mr.Korn probably wanted more money,so they ran him out of town on a rail!

Well my opinion is I really liked Richard Karn, he was a lot more animated
than John O'Hurley.

I feel like he is really stiff and a flat sense of humor which I liked with both
previous MC's.

But I wil still watch it until I get board of him(John) I am not crazy about
him something is lacking like personality. NONE:

As far as the classic theme music goes, it's a great theme, but IMO it really didnt work when they brought it back with the Karn era. It really didnt match the set and lighting, and it was badly edited.

I think John is a very welcome change to Family Feud. He brings a lot of class to a show that was sorely lacking in class. He's funny and quick witted, two major qualifications for a show like this. He makes the family members look very good and gives you reason to root for them.

Louie Anderson- Louie could be very funny, and to his credit, he tried to bring something different to Feud with his humor. Unfortunately, Louie was not the most polished as a game show host. He made mistakes in the gameplay, his voice was grating after a while, and some shows, he looks winded and lacked stamina. The set for Louie's version was a cold silver and blue, and was originally supposed to resemble a wrestling arena. During the first season, the family names on the flat screens were TOO SMALL to read, but thankfully they made the lettering bigger. The maingame board would open up for Louie to walk out, which IMO was actually pretty cool.

Richard Karn- When I saw Richard's first show, I thought... curious choice, picking a former sitcom sidekick as a game show host. As Al Borland, Richard was likeable and friendly, and Karn was equally likeable and friendly. Yes, he did have noticeable "first show jitters", but in terms of the gameplay, he was very solid and ran the game in a smooth, fast manner. Unfortunately, it was also noticeable that Richard lacked quick wit, and missed MANY opportunities for snappy replies to bad answers. He did have his moments, but they were few and far between. Does this mean he was a bad host? No, not really, however he was just not the best choice for this show, yet somehow he lasted 4 years! I will agree that Karn's final season was not exactly his best. Fans of Feud hoped that Karn would get more comfy with his role as "funny man" and "game show host". Unfortunately, if you compare his very first show to one from his final year, you wouldn't see much of a difference. In his final season, he made too big of a deal of DOUBLING THE POINTS and TRIPLING THE POINTS, and some of his expressions such as "drawing first blood" became tiring. He was basically placing enthusiasm and emphasis in areas where they didn't belong. It was also apparent that Karn was merely going through the motions. Ask the question, get an answer, repeat the question, get an answer, and so on. The set was revamped slightly to look more traditional. The set was made over in brown, yellow and tan earth tones, in an effort to create the same earth tones in Dawson's set. Instead of small, hanging screens, the family's names are now on a VERY large blue screen. Karn now enters from stage right, just as Dawson and Combs did on their shows. In the show's 3rd season, the yellow tones were replaced with purple, and the floor was also purple. During NASCAR week, the floor was given a checkerboard pattern, and for some reason they kept it for the rest of the season. In Karn's final season, the set got another overhaul, while the podiums remained the same, the set was given a LOT of lights, and the entire set changed colors. Very distracting and out of place for a show like Feud. Looked more like a disco club than Family Feud.

Even as of today, when John O'Hurley says the points will be doubled nonchalantly, the audience STILL cheers like Richard Karn just shouted it out loud.
