View Full Version : How Did Theo Get Into NYU?
I don't know if this has been brought up before or not but I always wondered how Theo managed to get into NYU? His character in high school was always the slacker type C/D student. Unless he started to improve in the later years in high school, how on earth did he get into NYU?
JuicyCoutureGirl 09-08-2006, 10:44 PM I have wondered about that myself. He was such a slacker and did not care about school. My guess is good connections, you know Cliff and Claire was friends and/or related to every important person in New York City.

Brian Damage 09-09-2006, 12:36 PM They discovered that Theo had a learning disability. He went for help and he corrected it. That's how they explained it anyway.
Ireneparalegal 09-09-2006, 12:44 PM The learning disability thing came along later as he got older, but it was shown that he was indeed a slacker and didn't care abt school.
I remember that episode when he and Cliff used monopoly money..."I got $200 left over, so see dad, I've got it made." Cliff: "Do you plan on having a girlfriend?" Theo: "Fo Sure." Cliff takes away the $200 dollars...
I don't think they had the intention of stating Theo was going to have a learning disabililty until the thought of writing into the script that he was going to NYU was coming up and had to make a reason for his lackluster performance in high school in the early years.
TVFactFan 09-09-2006, 06:49 PM Is NYU supposed to be on the same academic level of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton?

NYU is basically on the same level as those schools and a student like Theo with mainly C's and D's in high school would certainly not get in.

Exactly. I mean, sure he could have done better in school because of the diagnosis of his learning disability, but I don't think he could have had enough time to get some fantastic grades. He would have spent time just catching up.
TVFactFan 09-09-2006, 11:08 PM But his grades in 12th grade was't really talked about like it was when he was in 9th grade during season 1.

I wouldn't want to talk abt them either.

Theo got into NYU through the "Sitcom Character Student Enrollment Program."
It's a wonderful organization that places underachieving students like Theo Huxtable into a prestigeous college near their fictional sitcom family so they will never miss a moment of wacky hijinks at home.
;)

Jack1000 01-19-2007, 10:15 PM Some good points about Theo getting into NYU,
But what I didn't like was how just because his dyslexia learning disability was discovered, it suddenly transforms him into the seriously dedicated student as if he had been one all his life! I was like, "Yea, right! "
Remember the episode that's a two parter where he is a teacher/counselor at the Community Center for underprivileged kids? I mean, did the writers just pull that out of a hat? When did Theo ever express an interest in teaching? I hate episodes where a main character does something that you never hear of he/she doing before and than you never see them doing it again. Theo's befriending this angry dyslexic like he has all the answers for him. It just doesn't work. I wonder if the show was simply running out of fresh ideas at that point.
Theo Huxtable will always be known and loved as the irresponsible C/D student slacker!

ThomasE 02-01-2007, 03:42 PM I am wondering how he got accepted into Hillman. In the last season, Pam's guidance conselor Mr. Bostick said that a person needed a 3.7 GPA to go to Hillman and hers was 1.9. Theo's may have been higher but I am not sure that it was a 3.7 either. Mabye he brought his grades up during his junior and senior years and stopped goofing off at that time. He must have applied to both Hillman abd NYU and got accepted. He lost out on Hillman because of the Dorm check not being mailed that brings me to another question: why could they have not driven down to Hillman and just looked for "roomate wanted" ads?
