Well, maybe not slap her, but he should've spoke up to Thelma once she called off the engagement to Larry. She basically told her parents she wasn't going to get married, but instead, see Larry more often.
How could James or Florida for that matter, let their daughter talk to them that way?

If you are referring to her demeanor, it was a young lady being rebellious and somewhat childish...having done the same thing when my family forbade me from seeing my boyfriend (whom I ended up marrying and divorcing...my family was right!!!!! LOL)
I think we see Thelma as this PERFECT daughter that when she does make a mistake, it is real obvious...I am glad though she acted that way, it shows that she wasn't MISS PERFECT...LOL
Although, I do wonder why James didn't raise hell abt that. That was totally disrespectful to her family, shouting that way. I would have loved to see James give her a piece of his mind and MOUTH!

I was shocked that he just stood there and let Thelma talk to him like that.

I agree. He would never allow anyone to talk to him that way.

Remember that was his baby girl.
But J.J. was the one that really got of hand by telling James no in that episode. Good thing Florida was there to restrain James because he was ready to lay J.J. out.
