View Full Version : How come they never smoked weed on camera?

They only showed the basement filled with smoke and everyone acting high. It couldn't be an FCC regulation could it? I thought they smoked weed in that 1 episode of Rosanne. Maybe they thought it would be more artistic to just show the aftermath (for lack of the proper word that I can't think of). Well, I haven't seen every episode. I haven't seen most of the last 2 or 3 seasons 'cause FX only started showing those episodes recently.

I could never remember to watch it on FOX 'cause they kept moving it and I worked nights until a couple years ago. Actually I just noticed one of my local channels shows 2 episodes the same time as FX does and they've had the later episodes. Wonder why FX was so slow.

I don't think it would have gotten past the censors if we actually saw the kids smoking pot onscreen, so it was merely implied with the smoke in the background.

I do remember when the show first aired that the producers had to deal with a lot of flack from FOX when they learned the gang's marijuana use was going to be a recurring theme on the show.

Yup, you're right--they were censored and could only imply they were smoking weed rather than seeing any joints, paraphenalia, etc. They also couldn't use any of the slang words either or call it weed. I think because it was basically supposed to be a family-orientated show where both kids and their parents could watch it, and although they didn't want to leave out the smoking completely (the producers thought it was essential to show the kids doing it in some form because that's what happened in the 70's and leaving it out wouldn't have been realistic), they just needed to be careful.

I really love how the '360' scenes came out :) They were so hilarious and random. When watching the 'Final Goodbye' special they had on the other night, we can see how they actually film such a scene--basically, there's a camera guy RIGHT in the middle of all of them and it pivots quickly so that it's right in front of their face for the shot (Debra Jo Rupp said that it made her so nervous!) I thought that was cool to see :)

But surely, not EVERY teenager in the 70s smoked weed? I'm sure some teenagers did it back then. Maybe even many teenagers did. But not all of them. It would have been just as realistic to not have the gang or at least not the whole gang smoking weed. Eric doesn't even seem like the kind of guy, who would do that by himself. It just feels like Hyde has been bad influence on him.

No, you're right, some didn't. I just think the producers wanted to give it the best '70's vibe' possible, and that's how they went about it. My parents grew up in the 70's (they were around the same age as the kids were playing in the show) and they told me that mostly everyone did it, even peoples' parents (I heard that mentioned on a Vh1 special about the drug counter culture too). Personally, I can't see Red or Kitty going for that, but oh well :D
