I've started to feel a lot more sympathy for Frank than I did when I first started watching the show. He comes across as a nasty, arrogant jerk but deep down, you can tell he's just a lonely and desperately unhappy man who just wants love and approval. I think Hawkeye, Trapper, and BJ were too hard on him at times. They sometimes come across as the popular jocks picking in the social outcast. I always feel so bad for Frank when he's telling about his childhood and how no one really liked him.

Great question...
When I first read the title to this thread, I was honestly going to reply Frank for the exact same reasons!
To advance the conversation, I'll also add that for me, I grew to hate BJ a little less....he's a decent character, and Mike does a good job....as I've said elsewhere, I absolutely LOVE Trapper and Wayne, so replacing him just made me super-sad and bitter towards Beej, but as time's progressed with my MASH obsession (only about, oh...13 years), I've started to ease up a little!

Maybe in a few years I'll start liking BJ better too.
I actually caught the show somewhere in the middle seasons when I first started watching the reruns on Hallmark and I still prefer Trapper to BJ.

I used to be obsessed with Hawkeye for the first couple of runs through the series , but after about three I thought he got a little "over-the-top" with his rantings for peace , when in the beginning he was "numb" to the war and only wanted women. I realize the cast may have been trying to make people understand the horrors of war , but it was a dramatic change to make so quickly and push it so much. I now like each character for their different personalitites , but Hawk is still my favorite ; )

Always liked Col. Potter, Radar, Klinger and Father Mulcahy.
Was indifferent to Col. Blake and Trapper.
Felt somewhat sorry for Maj. Burns.
I liked BJ, but every now and then he'd do or say something that'd irritate me.
I liked Hawkeye all through, too, but had a bit less respect for him by the end of the series.
Major Winchester and Margaret are two characters who "grew" as individuals as the series progressed and I came to like them.
