Me too, the Recorder will be ready-lol Janice 08-29-2006, 03:18 PM I'd rather stick scissors in my eyes. AKA 08-29-2006, 03:20 PM The network evening news shows have become stale. The only time I watch them is when I want to play the medication commercial drinking game (take two shots when you're not quite sure what type of medication they're advertising, take one shot when they rattle off the side effects; etc). But I'll be watching Katie Couric's first show, if only to satisfy a certain sense of curiosity I have. 80sTrivia 08-29-2006, 04:31 PM I definitely plan on tuning in to catch Katie's first evening hosting the CBS Evening News... Brent88 08-30-2006, 12:29 AM I'll watch, but unless I'm just blown away, I'll go back to NBC the next night. dawsongirl 08-30-2006, 01:20 AM I can't stand her. Couric is the first woman named as the solo anchor of a major U.S. network evening newscast, and CBS has mounted an unprecedented publicity campaign to promote her arrival. A CBS News spokeswoman also said on Monday that Walter Cronkite, who served as anchor from 1963 to 1981, had recently taped a voice-over for the opening introduction of the newscast -- "This is the CBS Evening News ...," but the network had not decided whether to use it. She said there were no plans for Cronkite to appear in studio with Couric. Couric has said she has spoken with Cronkite about her upcoming role as the new face of the Evening News, and she would seem to gain an added measure of credibility by having the legendary journalist once known as "the most trusted man in America" introduce her newscast. I was around when it happened, but hadn't turned 5 yet... but I've seen the stupid video of Cronkite only about 1,000 times since then. Walter didn't do ANYTHING to get the country through the JFK assassination... he just happened to be in the studio at the time the reports came over, and he read them... and libs give him so much credit for 'getting the country through that terrible time'... The United States of America didn't need Walter Cronkite to get us through anything...this was already the greatest country in the world, by far, way before Walter came along. theshark8777 08-31-2006, 07:19 PM That's the spirit. No wonder this country is so divided. AKA 08-31-2006, 07:46 PM Some of us are making every effort possible to avoid getting into political pissing matches on this board, up to and including requesting that the admins block our access to the politics board. So please, Tweety, if you want to smear an 89-year-old man based on the fact that his political affiliations differ from yours (and wish death upon him), go right ahead. Just make sure you do it on the politics board and not here. Thanks. gilligan fanatic 08-31-2006, 07:55 PM Solomon, I found an ABC Nightline from 1987 recently, Ted Kopel isn't in it though because it is from right after Christmas. Thanks for your service...now do us all a favor and drop dead. First i was shocked to see such anger toward an elderly man As someone who watched JFK pass away, I can say that Cronkite was a trusted face in an age when tv was still pretty young to most of us he was someone you knew, back in a time when u turned on the news and went to the network that had the anchor u trusted most---- when cronkite announced that Jfk was gone, his pain was obvious and it was a feeling that most all of america shared---- republican or democrat, liberal or conservative some of us, like me--- do not just base how we feel on the persons political views--- i voted for Clinton twice, but yet I still cried when Reagan passed on--- not because of his politics, but because of what he represented and because of the life he led To bash an 89 year old man because you may not like his politics if pretty lame in lamonts book BUT the reason i logged on was just to comment that I could care less if Katie Couric is the anchor or not---- i do NOT think she is a serious or credible newsperson--- she is just a FLUFF JOURNALIST and its all just a lame ratings ploy Janice 08-31-2006, 09:06 PM No more political discussion please on this board please. TVFactFan 08-31-2006, 09:27 PM Solomon, I found an ABC Nightline from 1987 recently, Ted Kopel isn't in it though because it is from right after Christmas. Who was the Host? gilligan fanatic 08-31-2006, 09:32 PM Who was the Host? I got to check it out again, I honestly can't remember. I just know it wasn't him TVFactFan 08-31-2006, 09:33 PM I got to check it out again, I honestly can't remember. I just know it wasn't him It's funny how everytime I start a thread about a News anchor, it turns into political discussion-lol Lamont 09-01-2006, 09:38 PM the reason it turns that way is that the news has become a political tool liberals like some anchors conservatives like others its silly, i remember when the news was JUST the news now its a battle of the opinions  TVLanFan 09-01-2006, 10:19 PM First i was shocked to see such anger toward an elderly man ...To bash an 89 year old man because you may not like his politics if pretty lame in lamonts book BUT the reason i logged on was just to comment that I could care less if Katie Couric is the anchor or not---- i do NOT think she is a serious or credible newsperson--- she is just a FLUFF JOURNALIST and its all just a lame ratings ploy Agree 100% about Couric! But you have to admit, Cronkite has thrown himself and his opinions out there over the last couple of years. Why should Cronkite be immune to criticism simply because he's 89 or however many years old? Once again, the left trots out people to criticize Bush and who root for the enemy and against the USA, yet these people apparently can't be criticized... typical... TVLanFan 09-01-2006, 10:20 PM No more political discussion please on this board please. Oh man, sorry about that Janice! I just saw your post! Sorry about that!! Janice 09-02-2006, 11:59 AM Oh man, sorry about that Janice! I just saw your post! Sorry about that!! That's okay. You're right about Cronkite though. He's as biased and liberal as they come. As recently as 2004, he stated, on Larry King, that Karl Rove was behind the release of the Bin Laden tape (to influence the Presidential election). So the outcry that Cronkite is just an elderly old man is BS. If he's going to sling it, he can expect to get it back. Why is he off limits, because of his age? The main Chit Chat forum, however, is not the place to discuss it. Here's a good thread about Cronkite on the Politic's board. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=178748&highlight=walter+cronkite TVFactFan 09-05-2006, 05:51 PM 39 minutes to Katie' Debut!!!!!!!!!!!-lol gilligan fanatic 09-05-2006, 05:52 PM 39 minutes to Katie' Debut!!!!!!!!!!!-lol You recording it? Do you want all your news anchors to look like they just got done with painful dental surgery? Nothing if it's a Happy Story but you can have a plesant demeanor if you are taklking about Major News. That's why I think she is not anchor material because I don't know if she is able to make that transition from Happy to Serious AKA 09-05-2006, 07:48 PM Before joining The Today Show, she cut her teeth doing serious journalismn. Per Wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katie_Couric) Couric's reporting career began when she was hired by Stan Hooper as a desk assistant for the ABC News bureau in Washington, D.C., later joining CNN as an assignment editor. Between 1984 and 1986, she worked as a general-assignment reporter for WTVJ in Miami, Florida. During the following two years, she reported for WRC-TV, an NBC station in Washington, D.C., work which earned her an Associated Press award and an Emmy. Couric joined NBC News in 1989 as Deputy Pentagon Correspondent. Have you forgotten in the last few days that there's a politics board where you can air such grievances? Because there is. Tweety 09-05-2006, 10:58 PM So how do you think Katie did? I'm not sure...she really didn't do much of anything, just read the intros to some stories (she read them pretty well though, I think she only had one flub), and interviewed Friedman... She seemed comfortable enough for a first night on the job (this job, anyway). I actually thought the interview with Bush was tonight, didn't realize that it's not on until tomorrow... Interesting the way the reporter in the Afghanistan story refered to our President as "Mr. Bush"... Think they would have called Bill "Mr. Clinton"? No way, he was always "The President" or "President Clinton"... The reporter later referred to him as "The President", but still, he introduced the story by referring to him as "Mr. Bush". Subtle liberal bias there, showing a lack of respect for the person now occupying the office. Tweety 09-05-2006, 11:00 PM Have you forgotten in the last few days that there's a politics board where you can air such grievances? Because there is. I was talking about Katie's debut broadcast. CBS Evening News...fair and balanced... It wasn't ranting it was an interview, which I thought was one of the highlights of the night. And you're saying its Fair and Balanced when FoxNews has only Dick Morris or Newt Gingrich on for a segment with no liberal counterpart? I personally don't mind that ocassionally. It's nice to get someone's perspective without making it a full on debate. And CBS News will be having Rush Limbaugh on Thursday so there ya go. I know who was on Hannity and Colmes tonight, but there have been instances where it's just been a labeled conservative commentator on solo. I personally didn't see any harsh attacks from Friedman just criticism of the war and his thoughts. And yes this thread is about Katie, but you're the one who brought up all the additional criticism about CBS News so I felt the need to defend the broadcast. Brent88 09-06-2006, 01:09 PM I didn't like the format. I was bored by 10 minutes in and will be back to NBC tonight, but will check her out at times. I just didn't like all the fluff. All the time..." > Washington Times: "The nightly news has been Katie-fied..." > St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "Proponents of hard news most likely were dismayed by an abundance of feature segments..." > Chicago Tribune: "Couric's long been annoyed at being called perky, but perhaps quirky would be a better word for how she ended the broadcast..." > MSNBC.com: "Note to Katie: It's called the 'CBS Evening NEWS' for a reason..." > South Florida Sun-Sentinel: "Katie Couric's historic opening night as anchor of the CBS Evening News was remarkably unremarkable..." > Miami Herald: "Sleek new set with giant videoboard: check. Rousing new theme from the guy who wrote the Titanic score: check. Catchy sign-off phrase laden with mystic overtones: well, not exactly, but covered by a clever pitch for viewers to offer suggestions. Actual news content: Ummm..." > San Diego Union-Tribune: The CBS Evening News, "from now on, it seems, will let no gimmick go untried..." > Newsday: "But by the time 7 p.m. rolled around, some viewers could be excused for wondering, 'What happened in the world today?'" > Hollywood Reporter: "TV's first solo woman anchor, it seems, will preside over a news-flavored broadcast that consists of one or two news pieces, a few headlines and a host of soft features..." > Philadelphia Inquirer: "Katie Couric was great, but what have they done to The CBS Evening News?..." The Washinington Post said-"The White Blazer over the Black Top was a No-no and that the way it was buttoned made her look chubby. And that she needs help reading off the prompter theshark8777 09-06-2006, 04:53 PM I'm pretty sure most of us were akward on our first day or week or month of work... I dont really know. Brent88 09-08-2006, 05:33 PM Well since they were in third before, thats not really a big loss is it? Well it is when you consider the money they are paying her. They thought she'd save CBS News and it's not looking like she will. The show sucks... there's very little hard news. theshark8777 09-08-2006, 05:36 PM Is she making more or less than Rather? If it's less than they are no worse off. I agree though the night I did watch, there was very little hard news. I think that may change, but I still won't watch. I didnt watch Rather and I dont watch Katie or Gibson or Williams for that matter. Maybe they can sign her to save My Network Tv! :) TVFactFan 09-08-2006, 06:07 PM I agree Brent, they are not paying $15 million for CBS to remain in 3rd place-lol theshark8777 09-08-2006, 06:29 PM I agree Brent, they are not paying $15 million for CBS to remain in 3rd place-lol can't argue that. I think CBS overpaid though. TVFactFan 09-08-2006, 06:33 PM can't argue that. I think CBS overpaid though. I think she is too old to be playing that CUTE role. You can hear it all in her voice Brian Damage 09-08-2006, 06:41 PM I know it isn't right to critique an anchor's clothing, but did anybody see the blouse she was wearing today? She looked like she could walk on the set of Little House on the Prairie and nobody would notice. I stuck out a few minutes of "30 Minutes", then flipped over to ABC. Brent88 09-09-2006, 12:36 AM Did anyone catch the beginning tonight? The show opens like this "You are looking at one dangerous man"(referring to the top 10 fugitive). The problem... the camera shot was on her! I burst out laughing. :brent Janice 09-09-2006, 08:09 PM I've only seen a few minutes of her show here and there. Has anyone else noticed the soft-focus lens they're using? Friday's household rating earned Katie third place... Developing... Well, Katie got CBS out of the celler for a couple of days anyway... guess that's more than Rather ever did for them. theshark8777 09-11-2006, 11:39 AM Tecnically Rathers last broadcast was #1. TVFactFan 09-11-2006, 01:37 PM Well I expected CBS News to have a powerful first night. TripperFan 09-11-2006, 03:02 PM who cares - watching paint dry would be more interesting.... Or maybe if they were to PhotoShop her DURING the broadcast (like they did in that magazine photo) - that might get my attention - she's fat - she's thin - she's tall - she's short..... Kinda like a Katie Mr. Potato Head that you could interactively mess around with..... Brent88 09-13-2006, 03:13 PM TVNewser: Katie Back On Top Tuesday Night "Last night, the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric finished in first place again, attracting 8.60 million total viewers," the network said. Here are the numbers for Tuesday, Sept. 12: Total viewers: NBC: 8,100,000 / ABC: 7,920,000 / CBS: 8,600,000 Households: NBC: 5.6/12 / ABC: 5.6/11 / CBS: 6.0/12 25-54 demo: NBC: 2.1 / ABC: 2.2 / CBS: 2.3 18-49 demo: NBC: 1.6 / ABC: 1.5 / CBS: 1.7 Sean McManus says: "As we have consistently said, gradually getting a larger share of the existing audience is our goal, and a 16% increase the last two days is much more than we had hoped for..." Tweety 09-13-2006, 04:56 PM Did she decide on a signoff yet?-lol Got this item from Media Research Center (I censored a couple of them): On Monday's Late Show on CBS, David Letterman read a humorous list of suggested sign-offs Katie Couric could use at the end of the CBS Evening News. Among the proposals: "Three of tonight's stories were fake. Write in if you think you know which ones," "I'm gonna go get my freak on," "Let's turn this mother out again tomorrow," "Til tomorrow, morons," "Return to your sad little lives," "From me to you, suck it" and, my favorite, "Putting the 'BS' in CBS." Couric ended Tuesday's CBS Evening News by showing Letterman reading seven of his ideas, but none of the ones hinting at false stories: "Save us, Superman," "Well, I'm off to the dog track," "That's the deal, Lucille," "Here, kitty kitty kitty," "Keep feelin' the funk," "Oh, Lordy, I gots the news fever" and "I'm Katie Couric, I'm gonna go get me some ribs." [This item was posted Tuesday night on the MRC's blog, NewsBusters.org: http://newsbusters.org/node/7582 ] The full list, as posted Tuesday in the "Wahoo Gazette" daily show blog, by Michael Z. McIntee, posted on the Late Show site: -- Save us, Superman -- Suck on that, losers -- Well, I'm off to the dog track -- Three of tonight's stories were fake.
