Forest Whitaker has replaced Andre Braugher in a guest role on "ER," while Busy Philipps has signed on for at least four episodes of the NBC medical drama.
Whitaker will play a carpenter who comes to the emergency room with a seemingly simple cough, but while he waits, he suffers a stroke that leads to paralysis despite the efforts of Dr. Kovac (Goran Visnjic). The first of his five episodes airs October 19. Braugher pulled out because of a scheduling conflict.
Philipps will play a devout Christian who is a medical intern struggling to become a doctor.
Whitaker, who comes off a memorable turn on FX's cop drama "The Shield," next stars as Ugandan tyrant Idi Amin in the feature "The Last King of Scotland." Philipps' credits include the series "Love, Inc.," "Freaks and Geeks" and "Dawson's Creek" and the feature "White Chicks."
"ER" returns for a 13th season September 21.
