NEW YORK (AP) - Justin Timberlake backtracked from criticism of "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks after telling Fashion Rocks magazine the 29-year-old soul singer "can't carry a tune in a bucket."

"I have a strange relationship with that show," Timberlake tells the magazine in an interview. "I despise it, and yet I'm completely fascinated."

"The guy who won - people think he looks so normal, and he's so sweet, and he's so earnest, but he can't carry a tune in a bucket. Do you realize how much pressure it is to put on somebody all of a sudden?"

Timberlake, a member of boy band 'N Sync who is now pursuing a solo career, also said: "If he has any skeletons whatsoever; if, God forbid, he's gay, and all these people in Mississippi who voted for him are like, 'Oh, my God, I voted for a queer!' It's just too much pressure."

Liz Morentin, a representative for Hicks' record label, RCA, declined to comment Thursday.

Ken Sunshine, Timberlake's representative, said the 25-year-old singer's comments "were taken completely out of context."

"He has tremendous affection for Taylor Hicks' success," Sunshine told The Associated Press on Thursday. "He would never say anything that personal about somebody he's never met. He only wishes him the best."

Timberlake's second solo album, "FutureSex/LoveSounds," is set for release Sept. 12. "Sexyback," his first single from the CD, began playing on U.S. radio outlets last month.

"I wanted (the album) to look to a time when everything was really sexy," he says. "Maybe everybody was coked up, but who cares? It was hot. It was all about sex."

This coming from someone who was booed, thrown water bottles and muffins at him at the Toronto Rocks SARS concert three years ago - there was even a sign in the crowd regarding his own sexuality, hmm.

Well, if Justin dislikes him, then the guy must be bad!! I mean, Mr. Timberlake worships Michael Jackson, so obviously the man has the right perspective.

Justin Timberlake is a jerk but all he wants you to do is listen to what he's saying.

I can prove that the previous comment is true,

Justin Timberlake anagrams perfectly to: I'm A Jerk, But Listen.:happyface

I'm pretty sure Justin is worried about when he is exposed for being a "queer."
If there was ever a closet homosexual our midst, it's this guy.
You'll see.

And you have to love his observations on life- he is some citizen of the people. Everyone was coked up but who cares it was hot?

Young kids are following this a-hole's every word? I'd punch this guy in the head if I ever saw him.

I am so glad to find some people who are not, like, bashing and laughing at Taylor over this. Everybody at work in my marketing office gives me NO END of grief over my unabashed Taylor love, but whatever, and I think Justin sucked for making the comment. Especially since, you know, he started on the Mickey Mouse Club and in a boyband for heaven's sake. I enjoy Justin's music, but I don't think that makes him a superreal audience, you know?

I especially loved how his agent was all "it was taken out of context". I'd love to know exactly how "he can't carry a tune in a bucket" was mis-contextualized. What, he meant it in the "nice" way?

It's Justin Timberlake, so it doesn't really matter.
