Guys,
In the later seasons, Robert Reed had a great deal of influence in brining in scriptwriters to bring the show to a more realistic, less comic focuss, where as Sherwood and Lloyd Schwartz wanted more comedy in the stories.
A script editor who was a friend of Reed's was Tam Spiva. Just about all episodes where he serves as script editor are really good. Writers of some of the best episodes included Charles Hoffman and Skip Webster.
Not all Tam Spiva script edited episodes are good though. Mr. Spiva did "And Now A Word From Our Sponsor" which as many forum regulars know Mr. Reed and I BOTH CAN NOT STAND! Can you imagine how bad that episode might have been originally if Tam Spiva had NOT been involved in it?
All of Robert Reed's directing episodes are good:
I like "The Winner": Although I can't watch the kids making a mess of the ice cream eating it with their mouth.......SICK!
"How To Succeed in Business?" (a.k.a Peter's Bicycle Job.): Very good, and another episode where you need to see it on DVD because both syndication/TV Land chop up important storylines.
"Getting Greg's Goat": A GREAT one! Although I am surprised that Robert Reed directed this one because of its comic element. Maybe he and the Schwartz's had a big argument about things in the episode, and Reed agreed to cooperate on the condition that he be allowed to direct it.
