View Full Version : What's the rarest show...EVER!

What is the rarest show ever to you?

You know, that one that you've been looking for since you started trading, but have just about given up on.

Mine is the British sitcom 'Our House'. It featured the Carry On team, all living in the same house. I think it aired in the 70's, but when Richard Attenborough took over as head at the bbc, he ordered all of the reels to be destroyed to make room for more 'intellectual programmes'.

Think the chances of finding it are somewhere between nada and zilch!

I'd say things like the original Quatermass and A for Andromeda. Quatermass especially, since it was done live, and a strike at the BBC prevented kinescopes from being made of the last few episodes. The script by Nigel Kneale and some production photos exist, but not the last couple of episodes. I've always wanted to see the monster in full motion - apparently it was a glove puppet with bits of twigs and leaves stuck on it, and I think I remember reading that Kneale himself did the "puppetry" of the monster destroying Westminster Cathedral. It was all done live - studio, location, the whole shot. Somewhere out in space, the transmission is still playing ...

Another rare show is the 1968 hour long musical sitcom "That's Life" which starred Robert Morse and E.J. Peaker. The show was filmed live in front of an audience. I don't know if the episodes have been preserved or if they even exist anymore. I have never seen the show anywhere since it's original network run.

I would like to see "That's Life" again also. The show aired on ABC, maybe someone there would know what happened to the episodes.

Interesting thing to note: When you look at the TV.com website and open the page for That's Life (1968), there is detailed synopsis for all the episodes. So either someone has a terrific memory, has done their research or is in possession of the episodes and not doing a thing with them.

The Rarest ever in my opinion is the early 1970s show titled Khan, I have never ran across it in ANY medium including 16mm prints. It starred Khigh Dhiegh, known to most folks as "WO Fat" the infamous villain on Hawaii Five O!

That is my holy grail and only 4 eps!

This is not a sitcom, but since this is a thread about rare shows, how about David Cassidy Man Undercover? The Cassidy penned/performed theme song for the show was pretty good, and the episodes were not as bad as most people made them out to be. The show isn't a classic, but it was decent. Sort of a forerunner to shows like 21 Jump Street and Miami Vice. David Cassidy Man Undercover was doomed to fail because Cassidy was still cemented in most people's minds as Keith Partridge and they didn't take Cassidy seriously as an undercover cop. But the pilot for the show, a two hour police story episode titled- A Chance To Live, was well received and Cassidy was nominated for an emmy. With that momentum, the Man Undercover series was born. It would be great if this show would have an official DVD release. Maybe someday it will.

Yeah when I first got Man undercover, I traded it off to 8-9 peopel---sucked the rarity out of that right away.

I have the pilot of Heil Honey I'm home...quality again, terrible- Most rare things are.

Ive never found anyone with Turnabout- not even for sale-

and most other rare items, I assume peopel keep them rare by not mentioning them or not trading them.
I know a few that have nice set sof shows like Webster and Out of this world- but they don't trade them.
His theory is you are a tru collector by not releasing your colelction, to sacrifice for the new items you get it.
SO he trades IN shows, but not out.
Not even to tell.

It seems a shame to me- but things are only rare, for as long as they arent common right?

One day someone else will get them and trade them and share them

I have to admit there are a couple of shows in my collection that I don't trade or share because they are so rare, I don't want to put them into circulation through someone who only has a casual interest in the show. Y'know, the "hey, I wouldn't mind seeing that" kind of thing, and after they watch one episode, they hand it off to someone else. To me, the rare stuff warrants a kind of respect when it's handled. I know, that's kind of weird. If it took a lot of effort, money, searching, patience or whatever, to acquire a show, I hate the idea of just p*ssing it away on someone who doesn't really value it like I do.

Never been rare. Cassidy's fan base has always remained fairly huge, and dedicated, since the PF and resultingly, there are multiple copies of the series floating around from either the original broadcast or its syndicated airings (been shown at least twice in syndication in the US). I have 3 different complete sets myself and know of a couple of others. It is probably the most common 10-episode-series ever made. There are scores of shows that had similarly short runs that are way, way rarer, say, Paris 7000, Nakia, Survivors...

Nor was the show decent imho. For me, it ranks as the #1 worst show of all time with absolutely terrible writing and acting. Great, great cheese however and if viewed in that light, it is hilarious and highly enjoyable.

A set of House Calls is probably rare, I have maybe 3 CBS broadcasts of the show.

David Cassidy Man Undercover was with the the city editor who always yelled and argued with Kolchak right?

Turnabout, are you referring to the Sharon Gless series after Switch left the air?

Okay here is something rare, try to find the last season of Mannix...I dont think that has been show in 32 years...

I'm very careful these days about rare stuff, so I agree with her comments, I mean when I traded out rare stuff that cost me alot of money to obtain as well as alot of trade bait, I expected or assumed the other party would treat it as rare and trade it for something rare right? I find out it gets traded for lame garbage off of the Game Show Network, so no way am I ever going to give away rare stuff again so easily....

Reason why I always believed New People existed was due to the fact the 45 minute show Music Scene hosted by David Steinberg aired before the show and they plugged it on the air and showed promos for it. All episodes of Music Scene exist from the network master tapes, I have them all and I'm sure New People was taped on the same reels or by the same people in the network studios.

Anyone think New People has some similiarities to LOST??

I have to disagree with that comment. While David Cassidy Man Undercover is no classic, it certainly is not the #1 worst show of all time. Cassidy wrote and performed the shows theme song, it's a good tune and was trendy for the time. The show could have had better writing but the majority of the ten episodes are good. The first one, Running The Hill, is very good. Another good one is the third episode, Cage Of Steel, where Cassidy goes undercover in a maximum security prison to try and nab the killer of one of his associates. Overall, the series was acted well. Wendy Rastattar, who played Cassidy's wife on the show, is the weakest one acting-wise but she's given little to do in the episodes anyway.

During this period in his career, Cassidy was trying to shake his squeaky-clean Keith Partridge image. This series was a good vehicle for him. He played the part well, but most people didn't take the show seriously, the ratings weren't there and the show didn't have a chance. I think Sony has the rights to this show, would be great if they put it out on DVD.

For me...the rarest show ever appears to be Life with Bonnie. Seems strange, but nobody seems to have that show (and it wasn't that long ago...)

:shocked

But for real rarities: there's a show that I have never even bothered to ask about, since I'm probably the only one that remembers it. But someday I sure would like to find The Corner Bar from 1972 with Gabe Dell.
