How many titles did the Hogan family show go through. I think i read it was first called Valerie, then Valerie's Family(when she left show), then the Hogan Family. Can anyone help? thanks

So basically a different title each year right, lol. Yeah, I remember now it also being called the Hogans.

It was never called "The Hogans". The series started out as "Valerie", then when she was fired it was called "Valerie's Family", then a year later it was titled "The Hogan Family".

"The Hogans" was used as a sub-title of sorts when the show was called "Valerie's Family". In the opening, you see them playing softball (or is baseball?) after Sandy catches a ball, and the title "Valerie's Family" shows up. Then, when the cast is walking through a park like they're going on a picnic, "The Hogans" appears, and then Sandy Duncan is introduced, followed by Jason Bateman, then the "twins" Jeremy Licht & Danny Ponce, etc.

The reason for adding "The Hogans" was to make sure the viewers knew that the show was about the Hogans. Even though the title still had Valerie's name in it, and her firing was well-publicized, NBC & Lorimar were afraid that some viewers would expect Valerie to still have some tie to the show. Her name was still on it after all. But the use of her name was only to make sure viewers knew what show they were tuning into.

Had the show been named "The Hogan Family" right after it was "Valerie", it would've alienated the audience, or so the show thought. By keeping the name "Valerie" in its "Valerie's Family" stage, people were able to figure out what show it was. Also, the use of "The Hogans" was a way of getting the audience used to that title (when it would switch to "The Hogan Family"), since NBC & Lorimar had the rights to the "Valerie" name for only one year following Valerie's firing. Incidentally, she tried to stop them from using her name right when she was fired, but NBC & Lorimar promised her that they would go to court early to settle this matter in exchange for the use of her name, and she relented. Thus the case was settled a little after a year; otherwise it would've taken up to 5 years for it to go to trial, when, ironically, the show would've been off the air at that point.

From what I remember, the show was subtitled "The Hogans" during the "Valerie's Family" season because even then, the producers knew they were going to eventually drop the Valerie reference and just rename the show "The Hogans". But then I remember reading that the producers liked having the word "family" in the title, so when it was time to rename the show, they went with "The Hogan Family" instead of "The Hogans".

This is correct, since they only had the rights to the "Valerie" name for another year. I mentioned this in my previous post (in case you didn't know).

I remember this explanation as well. Jeremy Licht, while appearing on the game show "Win Lose or Draw" (when Vicky Lawrence hosted the show) gave this reasoning as an explanation. But this was said in jest. He kidded that he thought the show would then re-name itself after the following year (the show had been re-named "The Hogan Family" when he was saying this) as some sort of funny tradition.

I don't know about any of you, but I think this was just the show's attempt at explaining away some of the unpleasantness between them and Valerie, which, at this point, had been settled in court. Rather than explain all the dirt, they probably just said that they "liked" the word family and kept it at that. This made light of the situation and spared them (cast & crew alike) from having to re-hash the show's tumultuos history behind the scenes. Since all was settled (forgiven & forgotten), to acknowledge the feud seemed pointless. Better to make light of the whole thing and just move on.

Not sure if that's what transpired, but I think so. In fact, Valerie and the creative personnel who booted her are back to being friends again. This she has said so herself in a few interviews I've seen from 1990- on...

I remember the opening from when it was called Hogan Family!
There was Sandy catching the ball and then they were walking and The Hogan Family came on the screen then they showed Sandy walking on the campus of the High School then they showed Jason Bateman scoring in soccer then Jeremy Licht smiling by his locker then Danny Ponce opening his and all his tuff coming out.Then Edie McClurg putting an envelope in the mailbox........ahh those PAX-TV memories....

I vaguely remember NBC holding some sort of "election" to rename the show.

There were three choices: "The Hogan Family" and "The Hogans" were two, but I forgot what the third was.

Some trivia from the other side of the pond.............

When the show aired over here in England it went from Valerie straight to The Hogan Family, even though the episodes were shown in the US as Valeries Family. I know this because I still have 5 episodes on tape and I've just checked them.

The first 3 I have are episodes 38,39 and 41 which according to the episode guide on this site were called Valeries Family in the US; but the opening titles over here are for The Hogan Family (they show the 3 boys out washing the car, spraying each other and then chasing each other down the road).

I assume this was because these eps from 1987 didn't air here until 1991 (!) and by then it was well established in its final incarnation.

Hey, I remember seeing Jeremy Licht hit a baseball, Sandy Ducan catching it, and then the title "The Hogan Family" appeared. Then, Sandy Ducan walking on either Lakeview High School or Northwestern. of course, the twins and the rest afterwards. Notice that the theme music sounds almost like Perfect Strangers. The only difference is that Balki and Larry live on Addison and The Hogans live in Oak Park. Also, famous jazz singer Roberta Flack sung this theme song, in which it would make people think of a nice day walking to a picnic on Addison Street.
