Sony DVD-Rs are usually pretty good, as long as the container says "Made in Japan". They are either Sony manufactured or Taiyo Yuden (TY). If they say "Made in Taiwan", they're not as good.

The ones I use say Made in Taiwan. Are there any better brands? All I see on the shelfs of the stores are Made in Taiwan.

Are you in Canada, USA, other?

You should be able to order Taiyo Yudens online at a very good price.

Sony 4x/8x/16x media is all good stuff. It does not matter if it comes from Taiwan or Japan. The "Taiwan rule" has exceptions. This is one of them. The other big one is Mitsubishi media (Verbatim branded DVDs). Both DVD-R and DVD+R are fine.

That's not been my experience, or some others. I've had much more problems with the Taiwan Sony's vs. Japan. Others have reported similar experiences. It may be the model of burner used, whatever, but I stick with the MIJ versions to be safe.

BEST deal on taiyo yuden is at
www.shop4tech.com

u can get for $27 Per 100
FREE shipping

8 X discs
BUT they usually burn at 12 of 16 x on my machine

best deal u can get
and they often have 10% off codes u can use too
which makes it 24.30 per 100 shipped!

I use 4x +R Prodiscs, I get them from shop4tech for about $0.19 each. I have never had a problem with them. They don't play in all players though

enter in the code CS10 & you can get 10% off, if it doesn't work one day try it the next, it almost always works

Is this a good set ?

http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?go=view_item&id=3148&cata=1&s_cata=

If you can only burn at 4x you'd be throwing away money by buying those because you're paying for the 16x capabilities. Like Lamont pointed out you should be able to find 100 4x TYs for $20+ somewhere.

well
i do not think that is a good deal at all to be honest

u can get the 8X taiyo yudens for $27 per 100 shipped
that is $47 per 100
and u can NORMALLY buy sony or memorex or tdk at best buy for $29.99 per 100

WHAT I WOULD SUGGEST IS THIS
upgrade your drive to a better drive
u can get a new drive for $40 or so
sometimes less
and then buy the 8x taiyo yudens for $27 per 100

u will save a TON OF $$$ in the long run

upgrade drives are very reasonable

i have a pair of nec 3550 brand new drives that were extras from a recent project

never used, still in the box

i would sell them at $50 for the pair, plus actual postage

Can someone with a stand alone DVD Recorder please help answer a question I have? I have a Panasonic recorder about 2 years old. When I used 4x and 8x disks I seldom had any problems with bad disks. Used Fuji and TDK brands. Recently I had to use 16x because the retail stores in my Chicagoland area did not have 8x in stock. Out of the 100 disks - 50 Fuji and 50 TDK I got about 25 bad disks. Some recorded but would not finalize, others had errors messages. Do you think its my recorders' fault or the disks??? What does 16x mean to a stand alone? If all the disks went bad its one thing but 3/4 were read and finalized. I am going to order some 8x online but in the meantime I just got 50 new 16x as a gift. Gave it another try and used about 10 disks. 5 ok 5 bad. Should I give up on 16x???

I know what the problem is, I have the exact same Panasonics, I've bought 6 of them in fact. After a year and a 1/2 they start making strange grunting noises when you try to finalize a disc. They have no problem recording, but when they get old they start making strange noises when you try to put a title on and also when you try to finalize. That's the first sign you're in trouble. Within a couple weeks your DVDs will all be rendered "Error" or "Incompatible" when you try to finalize them. And then those DVDs are useless. That's the time to throw the rotten thing out. Or pay the cost of a new one to get the old one fixed. I've gone thru this now 3 times with these Panasonics. They work great till they get a couple years old, then be ready for loads of "Error" discs.

Now, if someone out there knows how to bring an "Incompatible" or "Error" disc back to life again, that's something I'd really like to know. I have saved most of my "Error" discs hoping one day I'll be able to bring them back to life, I've got a pile of about 40 discs now, all a bust because of the lousy old recorder. Anyone know how to bring a supposedly "Error" disc back to life so you can once again access the shows you've recorded on it? :(

that is true
they do not last forever
ive had to replace a few times too
BEST RULE OF THUMB is to get them replaced BEFORE the warranty runs out

AND when u do that, the model u have thats old is no longer around so they will replace with a NEWER MODEL!

Lamont

well no matter what
the drives go out eventually and its cheaper to get a new one than to replace the laser on the old one :)

Periodically reformatting the hard disk of a Panasonic recorder (often if you do a lot of editing) will prevent many problems before they occur and solve many problems afterwards. Unfortunately, you lose what's on the hard disk when you reformat, so it is best to do it before there is a problem.

thanks to all that replied. I guess the problem is the machine. I'm going to download a program Panasonic offers to its customers with older machines to help enhance its use. Hope it helps.

Anyone ever use Imation DVD-R or DVD+R discs? What did you think? They are on sale for $19.99/100 at my local Future Shop and was just wondering if they were any good.

I just recently switched brands. I went to the Imation brand, and it works best on my dvd recorder. haven't had any problems as of yet. They seem to work really good. I'd try a pack if I were you. I did use memorex, but they always ended up giving me problems, so i switched to Imation. They seem to be a better quality disc than memorex. Give them a try and if they don't work for you, you can always go to another brand.:D

I'll pass! You'll learn the hard way eventually! Taiyo Yuden, Yuden, Verbatim, or discs made in Japan-that is what expereienced traders who like to keep their collections working use.

Will someone please kill this thread

I do use Taiyo Yudens. I was simply asking if anyone used Imations because they are on sale. Sorry if the thread offends you, but you can always, oh I don't know....not click on it!

There is a reason these discs are so cheap. Ever wonder about that?

Personally, I won't trade with anyone who won't send my side of the trade on Verbatim, TY, and sometimes Ritek.

These discs aren't usually that cheap here. Another reason I asked.
