"Gringo" originated when Mexicans heard cowboys on the range singing the song
"Green Grow the Lilacs." Soon after, all Americans were referred to as "gringos."

"Shindig" came about when cowboys who wore spurs to square dances would
sometimes get a bit overly enthusiastic and dig their spurs into the shin of
another cowboy.
